Was shocked when I read that in an old magazine lately, couldnt imagine MLS ever putting up numbers like that ever again. Too bad MLS couldnt capitalize on that early hype. Scott Indermaur/Allsport EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A crowd of 78,416 turned out at Giants Stadium on July 14, 1996, to see a rare doubleheader. In the first-ever Major League Soccer All-Star Game, the Eastern Conference defeated the Western Conference 3-2. In the following exhibition, Brazil's Olympic team -- featuring budding superstar Ronaldo -- defeated the FIFA World Stars 2-1. At the time, the crowd was the largest ever for a sporting event at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, surpassed only by the Pope's visit in 1995. Tampa Bay Mutiny defender Steve Pittman beat two Western Conference defenders to score the game winner with two minutes remaining, sealing the victory for the Eastern squad. Hometown product Tab Ramos of the MetroStars opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game when he launched a right-footed rocket into the upper left corner to beat Western Conference goalkeeper Jorge Campos. "This was one of the most special days of my career," said Ramos, a native of Hillside, New Jersey. "Playing in this stadium and scoring goals. Everything was perfect." The lead did not last long. Kansas City's Preki scored the equalizer when his 30-yard blast beat East 'keeper Tony Meola in the 33rd minute. The Western Conference went ahead 2-1 just four minutes later when Dallas' Jason Kreis beat Meola with a low shot to the right corner of the net. Mexican 'keeper Campos ended up playing the first half of both the MLS All-Star Game and the FIFA World Stars contest. MetroStars forward Giovanni Savarese, celebrating his 25th birthday, tied the game, 2-2, when he hammered in a deflection off the hands of West goalkeeper Mark Dodd in the 69th minute. Tampa Bay's Carlos Valderrama earned MasterCard Most Valuable Player honors with two assists -- including the game-winner -- for the Eastern Conference All-Stars. "Winning and losing was not important here today," said East coach Thomas Rongen, of the Tampa Bay Mutiny. "The winners were MLS, the players and the fans, who saw a great game." In the second game, Brazilian World Cup star Bebeto opened the scoring for Brazil three minutes into the second half when he beat Chilean goalkeeper Nelson Tapia. Responding in the 69th minute, Argentine star Fernando Redondo raced down the left wing and crossed the ball to Germany's Juergen Klinsmann, who hit a volley to beat Brazilian goalkeeper Dida. Brazil's Roberto Carlos scored the game winner nine minutes later when he surprised Tapia with a shot that slipped inside the near post. For Brazil, the game was the final tuneup before the Atlanta Olympic Games. "I was very impressed with the stadium and the crowd," Klinsmann said. "We were not surprised by Brazil and the way they played."
