Italia vs Eagles final

Italia Shooters surprised Toronto Croatia 1-0 and Serbian White Eagles controlled Windsor Border Stars 6-1 in the CSL semi-final playoffs at Esther Shiner Stadium Saturday, to produce an Italia vs. Eagles final at the same ground next Sunday, October 15, a 5 pm kickoff.

Romanian pro Gabriel Pop of the Eagles scored four goals to be the player of the day in the two semi-finals, while Jason De Thomasis was the earlier hero for Italia with a late winning strike and certainly one of the most important of the season to put his side in the championship game.

Italia and Toronto Croatia fought a close contest in the opening game of a double header at the North York venue with Croatia having a decided edge in the first half. But as the game went into the second 45 minutes a younger Italia squad gradually forced Croatia on the back foot with some slick passing and dangerous crosses including long throw-ins that came close to bringing results.

The breakthrough came at 83 minutes as a result of more of the same from Italia combined with a questionable move by Croatia ‘keeper George Azcurra who committed himself well out of his net. Italia forward Bill Androutsos made headway up the left wing, moved the ball inside where it was pushed to De Thomasis who calmly rolled the ball into an empty net from 10 yards.

In the second game, except for one or two good opportunities for Windsor to score an early goal, particularly a good effort by Woreth Sampson who was unlucky not to score at the 24th minute mark, there appeared little doubt Serbian White Eagles would overcome the Border Stars as the game progressed. The first-year International Conference team had a wide margin in the midfield and on attack.

Pop opened the scoring at 29 minutes, a goal that came from a cross by Sinisi Ninkovic with Milos Scepanovic creating a bounce that allowed Pop to volley into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

Scepanovic made it 2-0 at 34 minutes and Pop added a hat-trick to his earlier strike with a goal two minutes later, then at the 49th minute mark and again at 61 minutes to secure the CSL goalscoring title with 27 goals, four more than team-mate Sasa Viciknez who finished second..

Border Stars’ Ablaya Abdulla made it 5-1 at 68 minutes and defender Joshua Gordon rounded off the Eagles scoring with a goal at 80 minutes, for a 6-1 final score.

It’s a return trip to Esther Shiner Stadium for the CSL Championship next Sunday at 5.

Result of the Saturday October 7th, 2006 CSL Semi-Final game between Toronto Croatia and Italia Shooters played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 1:00pm.

83 min…Shooters Jason DeThomasis GOAL…IS Bill Androutsos run on left sideline has him stop at 30 yards when he’s blocked by defender. He rolls ball to his right to IS Josue Jaramillo who passes to center to DeThomasis who sends 20 yard roller into left of net with goalie George Azcurra charging out to try to block shot.

Final Score:………Toronto Croatia…….0……….Italia Shooters……..1……..

Attendance was about 300 people on this mild sunny day. Security was tight with a pat down from a private security firm for all who came inside. Scheduling the next semi-final game for two hours after this game was to end and ensuring the stadium was cleared between games prevented the Croatia fans and the Serbian fans (the five o’clock game) from meeting up with each other.

The North York Astros are the hosts of these finals and this year did not insist on any kind of ‘wild card’ entry into the tournament. The only glitz was the appearance of Corporation Azul dj services for the music (they haven’t been booked for every game this year). For this game the ceremonial kick-off was taken by Toronto councillor Peter LoPreti and O Canada was sung by Natalie Ursini. There were six cheerleaders called The Chicas Astros (who I’d never seen at Astros games).

The shutout was earned by Shooters goalie Camilo Benzi who had a few tough saves to make for the win. Referee Silviu Petrescu kept the game in check.

Non scoring highlights included the TC goalie catching a deflection from a defender that hit the head of IS Jason DeThomasis at 3 minutes. At 10 minutes, DeThomasis blasted a 26 yard freekick up the middle that was blocked low in the wall and his rebound shot is low and wide left from 24 yards. At 24 minutes TC Antonio Zupan pushes a pass to TC Boris Tomac in middle and his 18 yard roller is stopped by the sprawling goalie. At 30 minutes, IS DeThomasis dummied a shot from 15 yards and touched pass over to IS Frank Bruno who flubbed the clear shot but had the ball saved by a defender about five yards off the goalline. A minutes later IS Stalin Cardenas cuts back a 12 yard shot wide right while running to his left and he was injured on the play. TC defenders then headed away a few crosses and cornerkicks and defender TC Domagoj Sain making a crucial block and a 2 on 1 break. At 42 minutes, TC Boris Maric took a 25 yard freekick that had a defender pop up the ball with his head and TC Peter Curic pop up a headed shot backwards just wide of net.

The second half had DeThomasis take a long throw-in at 71 minutes that had the ball popped up in the TC box and a defender clear off the line. Within a minute IS Alvaro Yaques’s cornerkick from the left was caught by the leaping goalie in a crowd of players. At 74 minutes, an IS freekick from the 39 yard sideline had TC Domagoj Sain pop up a header the goalie palm the ball over the net. At 78 minutes, TC Boris Tomac 30 yard shot through crowd of players has the IS goalie fly over and push the gall wide right. At 81 minutes, the TC goalie dived to take the ball off the foot of IS Aundrae Rollins at 10 yards who was fed the ball up the middle.

After the goal it was TC pressing. TC Zupan had a 30 yard kick that TC Tomac popped up from 7 yards on a header that the goalie caught. At 87 minutes, TC Jonatan Bustamante’s cornerkick from the left had the goalie catch in front of a crowd of players in the box. One minute later TC Goran Grubesic’s 35 yard freekick blast from the left and the goalie punch the ball forward and a TC player get their foot to it to knock ball wide left from 5 yards. At 90 minutes, Grubesic’s cornerkick from the left and the goalie swat the ball away from the box. Play carried on as no one noticed IS DeThomasis had been injured up field until an IS forward came back to tell the referee. DeThomasis needed to be replaced before the play resumed. At 92 minutes TC Tommy Ples had a diving header from 5 yards that he couldn’t quite turn on a 30 yard shot from the left.

Result of the game gave CSL officials a big sigh of relief as Italia Shooters just aren’t a hated rival for anybody in this league. As soon as the game was over, they could broadcast that the final will be held at Esther Shiner Stadium Sunday October 15th at 5:00pm. This saves the league from renting Lamport Stadium with its East and West stands to separate the Serbian and Croatia fans.

This will be the fourth year in a row that Italia/York Region/Vaughan Shooters have been in the championship final. They’ve lost each of those previous three games.

Result of the Saturday October 7th, 2006 CSL Semi-Final game between Serbian White Eagles and Windsor Border Stars played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 5:00pm.

29 min…White Eagles Gabriel Pop GOAL…SWE Sinisa Ninkovic crosses from 25 yards on the right and SWE Milos Scepanovic knocks ball down on left and Pop’s 7 yard shot is into the top right corner of net.

34 min…White Eagles Milos Scepanovic GOAL…SWE Gabriel Pop crosses from the right 25 yards and ball is one step ahead of charging SWE Bozo Milic in middle however Scepanovic on the left side gets to ball and rolls in 6 yarder to left side of net with goalie Anthony Santilli guarding center of net.

36 min…White Eagles Gabriel Pop GOAL…SWE Sasa Viciknez on rush down right rolls ball to Pop who’s 12 yard shot is into net.

49 min…White Eagles Gabriel Pop GOAL…SWE Sasa Viciknez rush on right wind and his low cross through crowd of players has Pop following up blast low 20 yard shot to low left side of net.

61 min…White Eagles Gabriel Pop GOAL…Pop is given ball on rush on right and he chips goalie who’s near edge of box from 25 yards and it one bounces into the net.

68 min…Border Stars Ablaye Abdulla GOAL…WBS Radek Papiez cross from right has a charging WBS player elbow the goalie in the head and Abdulla heads 8 yarder from left over the fallen goalie Dusan Belic into the net. I thought referee Vito Curalli would have disallowed that goal.

81 min…White Eagles Joshua Gordon GOAL…Gordon takes an 8 yard low shot into the right side of the net.

Final Score:…….Serbian White Eagles………6……….Windsor Border Stars……….1……….

Attendance was about 1000 people on this mild sunny day. Security was tight with a pat down from a private security firm for all who came inside. Scheduling this semi-final game for two hours after the Toronto Croatia game ended and ensuring the stadium was cleared between games prevented the two groups of fans from meeting up with each other. No flares were lit today because of the security and the fact that it was still daylight. A few jeers when it was announced that smoking was prohibited in the stadium but that was it for disturbances. I was slightly surprised by the crowd as at the same time Fox Sports World Canada was showing the Serbia vs. Belgium European Cup qualifier on television although I later heard it was already over and being shown on tape delay.

The North York Astros are the hosts of these finals and this year did not insist on any kind of ‘wild card’ entry into the tournament. The only glitz was the appearance of Corporation Azul dj services for the music (they haven’t been booked for every game this year). For this game the ceremonial kick-off was taken by Toronto councillor David Shiner (his mother had this stadium named after her for her long service on city council. I’d wondered why the name hasn’t been changed to Esther Shiner Memorial Stadium) and O Canada was sung by Natalie Ursini. There were six cheerleaders called The Chicas Astros (who I’d never seen at Astros games).

The game didn’t started half hour later than it should have. That wasn’t a problem as it took that long to get all the fans through security and the Border Stars team was late getting here because of a traffic jam outside Chatham.

Windsor only listed three subs and that included listing coach Pat Hilton as a player. Team owner/captain/playmaking midfielder Jeff Hodgson was not here as he was on a business trip to Washington DC. Offensive threat Aaron Byrd was not here either. The lack of a deeper bench has been the trouble for trips to Toronto this year. Great starters have helped them beat some of the weaker GTA teams but it wouldn’t work today against the league’s best team. Only strategy would have been to score early and hold on but that strategy didn’t work after the White Eagles three goals within seven minutes.

Non scoring highlights (and not everything went into the net!) included at 4 minutes, SWE Sasa Viciknez cornerkick from left had charging Bozo Milic knock down ball with a header from 5 yards to left but ball bounced over end line. At 14 minutes, Viciknez’s 18 yard freekick hits a head in the box. At 17 minutes, Milic’s 20 yard shot from the right after faking a cross and the goalie bats ball wide right. At 22 minutes Milic crosses from the right and SWE Gabriel Pop leap up and he’s not able to draw a penalty kick. At 23 minutes, WBS Woreth Sampson dekes a defender and he’s in alone and shoots 20 yarder that hits the sliding goalie and deflects back and bounces wide right. This could have changed the rest of the game if it had gone in! At 25 minutes WBS Fil Rocca boots away a ball at 20 yards on a 2 on 1 SWE rush. At 27 minutes Sampson’s 20 yard shot from the extreme left just misses the top right corner of the net. At 31 minutes, Scepanovic’s flying 10 yard header was caught by the goalie. At 42 minutes, a WBS player is given a pass on left and his 12 yard chip is caught by the goalie.

In the second half right after the restart, WBS Ablaye Abdulla runs through the middle and he touches ball for WBS Dominic Scicluna who boots 12 yarder over net. At 48 minutes WBS Radek Papiez is centered as pass and his 10 yard shot on a pushed up ball is sent over the net as he falls. At 54 minutes, SWE Joshua Gordon’s 30 yard low shot from right has diving goalie push the ball wide left. At 57 minutes Gordon rush on right has cross and sliding Gabriel Pop connects on 3 yarder over the net. At 60 minutes, a WBS cornerkick from the left had SWE Nikola Budalic head ball off the line on a WBS player’s 12 yard shot. At 65 minutes, SWE Sinisa Nikovic intercepts pass but his 12 yard redirection hits the right goalpost and the goalie dives on the rebound for the save. At 74 minutes, WBS Ablaye Abdulla rolls a 15 yard shot at the empty net and SWE Mark Janicek save the ball 3 yard out as WBS Papiez got away roller when he was held by the goalie on the right edge of the box. One minute later it was SWE Viciknez rushing down the left on a 2 on 2 rush and his pass to Pop whose 10 yard shot was wide right as he’s being pushed over by defender. At 87 minutes, SWE Dragan Radovic on break takes 15 yard shot that goalie saves point blank on slide and he gets up to catch the pop up.

Gabriel Pop’s four goal effort earns him the league scoring title as all games up until the final count in the results. He was tied with team-mate Sasa Viciknez at the start of the game but there was no selfishness in Viciknez giving him many set up passes to win the game.

I think that last post by BalkanBoy warrants suspension from the forum.

This is supposed to be a CANADA SUPPORTERS forum!

If Canada 'sux' in his opinion why doesn't he go and live in the Balkans, clearly it would be no loss to Canada?

You can suspend me from anything you like. Any by the way I hold a dual citizenship so 6 months of the year I do live in the Balkans. All I meant was this is a Fudbal Match... NO FLAGS, what the F**K, this is extreme. I am surprised the sign doesn't say "NO CHEERING"... Wow, I really was excited about this league bring back the best Canadian Soccer Team the Serbian White Eagles but this has definately rubbed me the wrong way.

There was no ban on flags, just DEROGATORY flags, banners or signs.

If you think announcing to the world you prefer to spend half your time living in the Balkans is going to ameliorate your statement that Canada sux you need to think again. If you're so down on Canada and so up on your Balkan heritage and Serbian WHite Eagles then go live in the Balkans fulltime and give up your Canadian citizenship - it clearly means very little to you.

There are many beautiful things about being a Canadian fan of soccer—foremost among them is ignorance. The community in which you were raised did not gather around the television set every four years for a solid, breathless month. Your country has never won. You can pick whatever team you like best and root for it without shame or fear of reprisal. You have not been indoctrinated into unwanted-yet-inescapable tribal allegiances by your soccer-crazed countrymen. You are an amateur, in the purest sense of the word.

I should be able to write, or diplay anything I like on my banner or sign...I paid my 25 bucks and thats that. Horrible on CSL's part horrible...

It doesn't even matter, all we need is the peoples support, united the Serb fans will chant and lead our team to victory!

Unbelievable sometimes the depths some people will stoop to on here to try to marginalize and silence people.

Canadia is the proper spelling for a country where the people call themselves "Canadians". If the country's name was spelled "Canada," then the people there would call themselves "Canadans." Since they call themselves "Canadians", it's only reasonable to spell the name of their country "Canadia." After all, people from Germany don't call themselves "Germanians" do they? CANADA SUCKS...hahaha just using this as another example....Anyways, ban things at soccer matches sucks about Canada

If your only response is to pick on a minor typo then you're in bad shape.

Wrong and wrong again. YOUR assumptions may be true for the general population in Canada, but this is a Canadian football site. A good many people on this site don't (and shouldn't) fall into anyones assumptions about the general Canadian population when it comes to football.

As to Canadians adopting the Old Country, or whoever in lea of Canada (at the World/Euro Cup), so what? Don't ever recall Yugoslavia spending anything resembling a solid, breathless month in either tourny, so what were you doing for the other 3 weeks? Same as everyone else here. Cheering on your favourates and enjoying the quality.

Try not to take that statement the wrong way. It's ment as a dramatic, and crystal clear example of how peoples, in Serbia, Scotland, Ukraine or even Mars (aka Canada) can still be passionate about this most passionate of games, mearly for the love of the game.

Well, I'm fine with Anyways, ban(ing) things at soccer matches sucks about Canada, which is how I at least read the origional intention. Fair enough, even if Canada is hardly alone in this practice...

Okay, so nothing to see here. Move on, people. Move on. There's a fairly important match to otherwise discuss.
