Vancouver Whitecaps match report: WHITECAPS LOSE 2-0 TO SEATTLE August 19, 2006 - Seattle Sounders 2 Vancouver Whitecaps 0 Saturday, August 19, 2006 Qwest Field, Seattle, WA (attendance: 3,584) Overview: The Whitecaps saw their four-game road undefeated streak come to an end in Seattle, as the defending champion Sounders handed Vancouver a 2-0 defeat. Midfielder Andrew Gregor scored the winner in the first half, while Leighton O'Brien put the game away with a second-half penalty kick, while also adding an assist. The loss leaves Vancouver with a record of 10W-6L-8T for 38 points, tied with the Charleston Battery and Rochester Raging Rhinos in the fight for second place, although Rochester have two games in hand over the Caps and Battery. Seattle improves to 9-11-4 for 31 points, as they jump from ninth to sixth place, putting them in playoff position. The Whitecaps now return to Vancouver for a four-game home stand to close out their regular season, with the first game on Saturday, August 26 against the Minnesota Thunder, in a 7:00 p.m. start at Swangard Stadium. Vancouver will have a rematch with Seattle on September 8. Scoring Summary: 32' Seattle Andrew Gregor (Leighton O'Brien) O'Brien sent the ball to Gregor who neatly chipped the ball over two defenders at the top of the box before striking the ball into the bottom corner. 65' Seattle Leighton O'Brien (PK) A penalty kick was awarded after Maykel Galindo stole the ball and fed Cam Weaver who went down under a challenge from goalkeeper Tony Caig. Midfielder Leighton O'Brien fired in from the spot. Game Notes: Seattle's Cuban striker Maykel Galindo was a constant threat. He forced a good save from goalkeeper Tony Caig after 11 minutes with a shot from seven yards. Then from the ensuing corner Vancouver midfielder Jay Alberts had to clear the ball off the line. Galindo came close again at 21' with a break down the right and an ambitious chip shot which hit the far post. At 41', Galindo unleashed a superb shot from the edge of the box which was matched by an equally brilliant diving save by Tony Caig. Vancouver's Cuban striker Eduardo Sebrango was the Whitecaps most dangerous player in the first half. He had a goal called back for handball at 17', and at 30' forced a superb save from goalkeeper Chris Eylander who tipped the ball over after Sebrango was sent in on goal by Tony Donatelli. Vancouver had their chances in the second half, but couldn't beat Chris Eylander. Jay Alberts rifled a shot at 53' which was well held; a long-range blast from Joey Gjertsen thudded off the post at 61'; Eduardo Sebrango had a crisp header saved at 77'. Corey Woolfolk came on at 84' to make his long-awaited Whitecaps debut, and almost scored on a bicycle kick at 87' but put it over the bar. The American striker, who finished fifth in league scoring last year, had sat out the entire season to date with an injury. Martin Nash has played in 60 consecutive games for Vancouver spanning three seasons. This is the third longest ironman streak in team history, and the longest since Domenic Mobilio established the record of 68 games in 1992. The win gives the Sounders the Cascadia Cup, the fan-sponsored competition between Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver. The Whitecaps had won the cup the previous two years. With only one game remaining in the competition Seattle have an insurmountable 14 points, Vancouver has 9, and Portland 6. The Whitecaps are winless in their last twelve games overall against Seattle, as well as in their last eleven games in Seattle. Their last win over the Sounders was 1-0 on July 9, 2004 at Swangard, while their last win in Seattle was in the 2002 playoffs, 6-2 on September 15.
