Result of the Saturday August 12th, 2006 CSL game between Caribbean Selects and Italia Shooters played at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan at 8:00pm. Although the game was originally scheduled at the beginning of the season to be played at Birchmount Stadium in Etobicoke, the game was moved here because Birchmount is still not ready.

40 min…Selects Dwayne Osbourne GOAL…Osbourne scores on flick header from 6 yards when he receives a cornerkick from the left and the shot beats goalie Joshua Lemos. Osbourne then earns a Yellow card for pulling off his shirt and wave around to celebrate his goal.

94 min…Shooters Frank Bruno GOAL…Bruno rolls 20 yard shot through crowd of players in Selects box to left side of net beyond diving goalie Ramon McIntosh.

Final Score:……Caribbean Selects………1…………Italia Shooters……..1………..

Attendance was about 50 people on this warm evening with a bright sun in the North West for the first half that would be in the eyes of the Shooters goalie. This game was moved with about two weeks notice but Selects would be considered the home team.

The Selects missed out by about 15 seconds from earning only their second league win of the year as they didn’t quite survive five minutes of added time by referee Jacques Tjonasan. They looked better than how I’ve seen them play in months. They had Ken Dawson as an assistant coach who was calling out commands to cover open players that in previous games had always been able to spring loose on rushes. He must be new because he had to keep asking who the players were.

The times I’ve watched the Shooters play, they need quite a few scoring chances before they capitalise. This time it was for the last seven minutes of the game when they poured on the pressure.

Selects goal scorer Dwayne Osbourne is nicknamed “Blinky” by his team-mates. He wore a padded eye patch over his left eye. This is not a temporary situation as he told me he was blinded back in 1999 at his job in Jamaica when a bottle exploded.

Steven Craig is no longer with the Selects and it turned out it was him I saw last night playing for Toronto Supra Portuguese after being transferred. Last year he played for Laval Dynamites. Often injured Joey Todaro is no longer with the Shooters I found out last week. He was their dead ball specialist but was let go when he failed to show up for their June 9th game against Toronto Croatia. The game was played for 7:00pm but he was away celebrating Italy’s World Cup victory.

Tonight’s game and last night’s Supra holding a lead on undefeated Serbian White Eagles until 64 minutes shows this year in the CSL that on any given night, any team can be competitive with the best.

OAKVILLE, CROATIA, STALLIONS WIN

Sunday - August 13, 2006

Lynx nip Hamilton 1-0

Oakville Blue Devils, Toronto Croatia and Brampton Stallions all registered wins in regular season CSL action, the USL’s Toronto Lynx advanced to the Open Canada Cup semifinals and Serbian White Eagles lost to Harbourview FC of Jamaica in a Sunday night exhibition at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.

Oakville midfielder Sam Hassam single handedly destroyed North York Astros with four goals in a 5-1 win at Bronte Stadium, to increase his tally to 10 goals for the season. Hassam scored at 27, 38, 40 and 83 minutes, while Gavin Russell notched the fifth Blue Devils’ marker at 92 minutes following a goal by Eugene Ishchak for the Astros at the 56th minute mark.

Oakville now lead the National Division by five points with a 7-3-3 WLT record for 24 points in the season, the Astros have a 3-6-4 for 13 points and 6th place in the standings.

Toronto Croatia won a hard fought encounter 2-0 over Laval Dynamites at the Bois-de-Boulogne Stadium to keep pace with Serbian White Eagles at the top of the International Division. Croatia’s Tommy Ples opened the scoring at the 41 minute and Hayden Fitzwilliams made it 2-0 at the 71st minute mark. Croatia have suffered just a single defeat in their 13-game campaign and now stand at 8-1-4 for 28 points, two behind Serbian White Eagles with their 100 per cent record in 10 games played.

Brampton Hitmen lost two players in their game with St. Catharines Wolves at Victoria Park in Brampton, but still managed a 1-0 victory and three important points in the National Division. Hugo Herrera beat St. Catharines goalkeeper Kyle Mendonca at 10 minutes for the only goal of the match, to improve the Stallions’ record to 5-5-2 for 17 points. Ronald Nicholas was shown the red card for serious foul play at 79 minutes and Marlon Dyke was also ejected at the 84th minute mark after receiving a second yellow card. St. Catharines are at 5-6-4 for 19 points on the season.

The Toronto Lynx advanced to the semifinals of the Open Canada Cup with a 1-0 win over a courageous Hamilton Serbians at Brian Timmis Stadium in Hamilton. Former Vaughan Shooters forward Matthew Palleschi struck the winner at the 84th minute just when it appeared the quarterfinal game was heading for overtime. The Ontario Soccer League amateur side fought throughout in an effort to topple the USL First Division Lynx and there were times in the game the result could have gone either way. The Lynx advance with London AEK, Brampton Stallions, Ottawa St. Anthony Italia and possibly London City who have a wild card opportunity to enter contention as host of the Open Canada Cup Finals weekend at the beginning of September.

Loxely Thomas scored the lone goal for Harbourview FC of Jamaica at the 54th minute mark to give the Caribbean side a 1-0 victory over the CSL’s Serbian White Eagles in a friendly match at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. Harbourview FC is considered one of the island’s most attractive teams and the game follows an earlier visit by a Jamaican team when Portmore United played Metro Lions Soccer Club at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough two years ago.

Result of the Sunday August 13th, 2006 exhibition game between Serbian White Eagles of the CSL and Harbourview FC from Jamaica.

86 min…HV RED card…Desmond Breakenridge earns second Yellow card for mouthing off before play resumes.

Final Score:……..Serbian White Eagles……..0……….Harbour View FC……..1……..

Attendance was announced as 1517 on an event that was actually organized by Caribbean Stars Community Promotions and was at least three quarters Jamaican fans.

I can only comment on the second half because I arrived at 34 minutes after driving from watching a game in Hamilton. The game was pretty even in the second half with each team having chances to score. Most of the SWE free kicks were blocked and their corner kicks were knocked away. Michaud Barrett earned the shutout for Harbourview and had to make a good diving save to push wide a 10 yard drive by Noel Ellington who with a burst of speed got to a ball between two defenders.

This game will be broadcast on television this Saturday at 9:00am on OMNI-1 ch47 and rebroadcast the following Thursday at 9:00am on the same channel. Hey it’s an alternative to the season opener of the English Premier league.

Harbourview will play again on Tuesday at 8:00pm at Esther Shiner Stadium against Caribbean Selects All Star squad. This will be the Caribbean Selects but supplemented with some players from other CSL teams to make it more competitive because the Selects have only won one game in league play. With them only offering first names and nicknames, I suspect the line-up will include Hayden Fitzwilliams and Caswain Mason from Toronto Croatia and Kadian Leckie from Italia Shooters.
