Charleston defeats Toronto 2-1 Hollingsworth and Okoye tally as the Battery climbs to second position

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Toronto Lynx by a score of two goals to one tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,894. Ben Hollingsworth and Ugo Okoye supplied the goals as Charleston improved to 2nd position in the USL First Division (10-7-4, 34 points).

After a slow star Charleston broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Midfielder Omar Daley slipped a pass down the line to defender Tim Karalexis. Karalexis controlled the pass, looked up then chipped a cross to the back-post towards forward Ben Hollingsworth. Hollingsworth met the pass and headed down past goalkeeper Theo Zagar into the goal.

Toronto fought back and five minutes later came close to leveling the game after David DiPlacido picked up a loose ball twenty-yards out. DiPlacido fired at the goal but his right-footed attempt was deflected wide for a corner-kick.

Charleston added a second goal in the 50th minute after Hollingsworth weighted a square ball to midfielder Ugo Okoye just outside the box. Okoye lashed a first-time shot past Zagar into the top-right corner to record his first ever Battery goal.

The Lynx continued to press and were rewarded with a goal in the 80th minute after goalkeeper Dusty Hudock failed to stop a knuckling shot from midfielder Neto.

The Battery had the final word however as midfielder Luke Vercollone surged forward at the end of the game. He cut the ball onto his right foot but his hard shot was blocked behind for a corner.

Charleston remains at home for a Wednesday night match versus the Puerto Rico Islanders; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
