Canada Downs Bermuda 10-0 at Caribbean Cup

Ottawa, Ontario - Canada’s Men’s Under-17 Team coached by Stephen Hart blanked Bermuda 10-0 at Dwight Yorke Stadium on Tuesday at the U-16 Caribbean Football Union’s Youth Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. Marcus Johnstone of Edmonton, Alberta scored four times, ultimately earning him the player of the game honours.

The rout began early as Randy Edwini-Bonsu accepted a cross from Dalvir Malhi from the left side in the third minute of play. Edwini-Bonsu then beat his defender at the top of the 18 yard box and cut inside to fire a left-footed shot from just behind the penalty marker into the left corner of the net.

Three minutes later, Philippe Davies added to the Canadian scoreline when he chesting a corner into the net.

Johnstone scored his first of four in the 16th minute on a low cross to the box by Alex Semenets at the base line. Semenets had made a run at the side of the 18 yard line beating his defender for the pass.

Semenets again coordinated the next goal in the 21st minute as he sent a through ball to Johnstone who then broke in alone on the right side of the opponents’ keeper. The keeper stopped the initial shot, but Mohamed Sylla ran down the rebound to bury it into an open net. Sylla would score again in the 31st minute.

At the half, Jarek Whiteman substituted into the match for Edwini-Bonsu and scored the other two goals for the young Canadians in the 64th and 90th minutes. His second was on a great through ball by Kevin Chan Yu-Tin to Colin Paranteau-Michon down left hand side. Paranteau-Michon did well to cross the ball across the net finding Whiteman just above the right hand corner of the 6 yard box. Whiteman then dove for the header into the opposite corner of the net.

JD Blakely guarded the Canadian goal for the entire 90 minutes and earned the shutout.

Canada Defeats El Salvador 2-1 At Caribbean Cup

Ottawa, Ontario - Canada’s Men’s Under-17 Team defeated their El Salvador counterparts 2-1 on Thursday, August 17 while competing at the Caribbean Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.

Canada played well throughout game and at many times dominated; however they got into some trouble with the referee.

Only after three minutes of play, Canada was down following a corner kick which they failed to clear. Favricio Torres picked up the ball from a scramble to put it past the Canadian keeper Jason Blakely.

Dalvir Malhi missed a great opportunity to equalize seven minutes later, just missing to connect on a through ball by Alex Semenets which made its way across the net.

Canada evened the score in the 17th minute on a Corner kick as Adam Straith does well to beat everyone in the air to head it in the back of the net.

It only five minutes more for Canada to score the go ahead and eventual winner when Philippe Davies scored on a header off a Semenets free kick just outside the right corner of the 18.

At the 69th minute, Davies was sent off leaving Canada down to ten men and El Salvador controlled the game from that point forward, however Canada kept their composure and closed out the match.

“In many instances we lacked composure, but to be fair to the players this was a very trying game,” said Head Coach when asked about the match. “Overall I am proud of how they conducted themselves.”

Re: Canada 7 vs President's XI 0.

Good to see our boys continue to develop against strong opposition. Hope the quarter-final/semi-final will prove a bit more taxing. There has got to be a better way to develop these young men. How can they fancy themselves against other U17 squads world-wide, or even other top-ranked CONCACAF squads, playing against these minnows.

Comon, next they have to face Mexico, Panama and Jamaica and have already faced El Salvador. They only have played 2 minnows this year in 12 quality internationals (if you count the next 3 games).

If you didn't know, they,ve changed the tournament format and Canada has been placed in a group with Mexico, Panama and Jamaica with the winner playing the other group first team for the final.

Fair enough on chg in dev't re: playoff picture. I also stand corrected that they are beyond the "minnow" stage since they are to play stronger opposition.... Jamaica 3 v Canada 0. Hopefully the Mexico match bodes better.... As well as the Panama match. I suppose on the other hand, that beating minnows also prepares them for stronger opposition QED.

Canada Falls 2-1 in Heartbreaker at Caribbean Cup

Canada’s Under-17 Team was defeated 2-1 by Mexico on Wednesday following a late goal scored in injury time at the Caribbean Youth Cup. With the loss, Canada is now unable to advance to finals or consolation match of the tournament.

Canada started the match slow leaving Mexico to control the first half, and ultimately let their opponents score the first goal on a counter attack in the 29th minute. Mexico’s Carlos Pena was able to outrun the Canadian defenders to eventually chip it over the Canadian keeper Julien Latendresse-Levesque into the net.

In the second half, Canada seemed to come alive and played with far more tenacity. They managed to pressure the Mexican defence and at times had them on their heels. They eventually scored the equalizer in the 67th minute following a corner kick. Adam Straith fended off the defenders to beat everyone in the air and placed the ball in the left in the right corner of the net.

In the 81st minute Canada should have received a penalty shot, but the referee put away the whistle, gaining the sympathy of the entire crowd who were livid with the non-call and from that point cheered the young Canucks on.

Unfortunately in the final seconds it slipped away as Canada found themselves on their heels as a Mexican player broke in down right, to cross it into the box finding Raul Nava for the goal and game winner.

Canada will play Panama next on Saturday to close out the tournament.

A loss to Jamaica and Mexico. Two teams that I think Canada has to play in WCQ in April. Although they may have been unlucky losses with a couple key mistakes... those key mistakes could be the difference in advancing to the WC or returning home. Are these 2 games indicators of trouble to come or is it just another stepping stone that SH can get over with a couple adjustments?

I wouldn't try to read too much in these results, the important thing is to get some experience for those kids. We're talking of 15-16 yrs old who don't have a lot of international experience so they're learning right now.

I've always gave a break to our U-17 NT when they don,t qualify for the U-17 WC but next year CONCACAF will have 4 spots so the expectations might be higher for this team.

This team used 11 different players than last year's team. I think giving a number of players the experience is important and we should expect the third version to be the best team (the one used during the actual U17 WCQ). At this age it is about development and opportunity or should be.

If I'm not mistaken, it is 5 spots. Originally it was 3 but CONCACAF got an extra one for their "achievments" in the WC. But since Mexico won the last U17 WC that gives CONCACAF yet another spot to equal 5. If I'm not mistaken.
