DJT
Montreal 1Seattle 0 9' MON Salles 69' MON RED CARD Zé Roberto (second yellow) Attendance: 13,397 Impact match report: MONTREAL – A goal by Mauricio Salles in the ninth minute gave the Montreal Impact a 1-0 win against the Seattle Sounders, Wednesday night, at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, in front of a regular-season record crowd of 13,397 spectators. Salles, who scored his sixth of the season, his fourth game-winning goal, connected on a shot from 25 yards out that was partially deflected by the Sounders defense, leaving no chance for goalkeeper Chris Eylander. The Impact played the last 21 minutes of the game with 10 men, following midfielder Zé Roberto’s second yellow card of the game. Roberto will therefore miss Montreal’s next match-up in Atlanta against the Silverbacks, Friday. With the win, the Impact consolidates its lead in first place in USL D1 standings, six points ahead of the Vancouver Whitecaps, who have played three more games. The Impact also continues to improve on its team record for best start to the season at home, which presently stands at nine games without a loss (6-0-3). The Impact has yet to allow a goal at home in the second half. Impact goalkeeper Andrew Weber, who faced 15 shots and made key saves notably on Sounders forward William Weaver a the 83rd minute, registered his seventh shutout in 11 starts this season. Defender Nevio Pizzolitto has now played 16,111 regular season career minutes with the Impact and moves into third place for most minutes played in club history, ahead of Patrick Diotte (16,062). With 13,397 spectators, the Impact set a new attendance record for the regular season, surpassing the previous mark of 13,367 fans established on July 11 against Toronto. It was also the Impact’s second largest crowd in club history, after the 2004 championship final, September 18, 2005, which attracted 13,648 spectators. The Impact will play its next game on Friday against the Silverbacks in Atlanta (7:30 pm). THE GOAL 9th minute – Forward Mauricio Salles took a low shot with his left foot from 25 yards. The ball was deflected off a Seattle defender and beat goalkeeper Chris Eylander, on his left. HIGHLIGHTS 7th minute – After receiving a centering pass to the far post from Lars Lyssand, forward Mauricio Salles redirected the ball with a header, but goalkeeper Chris Eylander made the save, diving to his right. 30th minute – On a back pass from midfielder Kirk Wilson deep on the right flank, Salles took a low shot from the penalty point, saved by a scrambling Eylander, with his feet. 45e minute – Midfielder Leighton O’Brien took a free kick just outside the box, but Montreal Impact goalkeeper Andrew Weber made the diving save, to his left. 83rd minute – Andrew Weber made the save of the game on a reflex, right hand save on forward William Weaver, who tried to beat the Impact goalkeeper with a quick header, in front of the net. POST GAME COMMENTS HEAD COACH NICK DE SANTIS "It's too bad we didn't score more goals in the first half because it would have made our lives easier afterwards. We had to suffer more at home to win this battle. Mauricio (Salles) had good scoring chances and it’s positive to see our forwards getting involved.” FORWARD MAURICIO SALLES "We had numerous scoring chances and luckily we were able to capitalize on one of those chances. The game was not easy, but we got a good result. I’m pleased that I helped the team win.” DEFENDER NEVIO PIZZOLITTO "The Sounders played a good game. They tried to play long balls towards William Weaver, but we were able to stop him. It wasn’t easy tonight with the field conditions. We had some problems controlling the ball. We’re happy to have won this physical game.” MISSING FROM THE LINE-UP Team – Player – Injury - Status MTL - Patrick Leduc (M) - light ankle sprain - day-to-day MTL - Jason DiTullio (D) – knee - return date TBD MTL - Greg Sutton (G) - fractured index finger - could return in August NEXT GAMES Fri. masster
Just out of curiousity, are those all paid tickets? Over 13,000...very impressive. I know the Impact are a non profit so I was wondering if they give a lot of tickets away to youth teams etc. If not...thats is a great crowd!! I hope it was a good game so they come back. Daniel
There are a lot of given tickets and discounted tickets. I'd guess that total ticket sales probably amount to 6,000-7,000 fully paid tickets. I have nothing to back this up.
An Observer
Its nice to see Massimo Di Ioia of U-20s getting some playing time. We certainly can always use more depth.
