Winnipeg, July 19, 2006 - The Winnipeg Soccer Federation's dream of having a marquee indoor-outdoor soccer complex for the city's soccer community will soon come to life. The City of Winnipeg's Executive Policy Committee today voted in support of a $9.4 million facility -- four indoor fields and three outdoor pitches -- to be built at the University of Manitoba. The plan will see the facility operational in time for the 2007 indoor season.

"This is a good day for the city's soccer players," said Keith Ferbers, Chair of the WSF, an organization founded in 2003 by the youth, women's and men's soccer leagues. "We've been at this for three years and we're happy to have an agreement that will see more pitches available -- both indoor and outdoor -- to accommodate the pent up demand in this sport."

"We're going to have a first class facility for current and future players for years to come."

The complex will be built by Laureate Developments Inc. on land owned by the University of Manitoba, just east of University Stadium. The indoor complex will include four fields, spectator seating, concessions, a pro shop and locker rooms. The deal will also see the grass pitch located inside the stadium's running track overhauled with artificial turf and equipped with stadium lighting. It will be sized according to Canadian Soccer Association specifications so as to attract major soccer events.

The City of Winnipeg will direct $6 million to the project. This funding was committed by the three levels of government to the WSF's plan in April 2005. Laureate will fund up to $1.9 million for designing and building the project while the WSF will fund the remaining $1.5 million.

The Winnipeg Soccer Federation exists to encourage the citizens of Winnipeg to participate in the sport of soccer at all skill levels and for life. Federation board members include representatives from the Manitoba Men's Senior Soccer League, the Winnipeg Women's Soccer League and the Winnipeg Youth Soccer Association.
