We spoke with an Impact player who mentionned rumours that the USL clubs wanted to organize a tournament to send a representative to the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. Year-round contracts and weather were mentionned as serious issues, but the rumour is around.

Why don't they (along with toronto FC) just join the Open Canada Cup and lobby the CSA to sanction that tournament?

That's just crazy talk. Just crazy I tell ya! Why would they do something so logical? Logic is not allowed in Canadian soccer.

Although it's amusing that this comes up now. Just like the Lynx finaly finding time to enter the Open Cup. I'm sure it's all a coincidence. I just hope the CSA hasn't done anything stupid like promised TFC an automatic spot. On one hand they should since the USL teams haven't done anything, but it would be stupid.

Champions Cup final 8 = 2 American, 2 Mexican, 3 Central American, and 1 Caribbean teams

The 2 American qualifiers are the MLS Cup winner and the MLS regular season champion. Yeah, it's stupid that the US Open Cup which has been around for like 100 years does not send it's winner to CONCACAF. I think MLS teams have won it every year MLS has been around. I wonder if TFC would get a spot? That would be stupid, but they should if they win.

I don't know who qualifies from Mexico.

The Caribbean and Central Americans have their qualifying from like September to December. I think ideally the Open Cup could end in September, and then the Canadian team can play like the Caribbean winner or the Central 3rd place or something sometime in like Nov/Dec, so the Canadian team can still be in game shape.

The 2006 final round had games in Feb/Mar/Apr. So if the Canadian team qualifies for the final 8, they could stay together and train over the winter. If they don't qualify, then they can go play indoor soccer or whatever they do.

Like was mentioned, contracts would be a problem as it would basically double (if not more) the cost for teams since now they would need the players year-round. There's no way they could take the winter off and think they have any hope in hell of beating anybody.

If the berth(s) where given to teams who qualified out of the Open Canada Cup, that would make the tournament far more appealing to more clubs. In time hopfully we could get brackets going in Western and Atlantic Canada where amateur teams could enter. Then bang, we have a Canadian championship without all this rediculous hastle the CSA seems to prefer. If somehow we could get the MLS side(s) in, even better.
