Whitecaps match report:

WHITECAPS DRAW ATLANTA 2-2

June 17, 2006 - Atlanta Silverbacks 2

Vancouver Whitecaps 2

Saturday, June 17, 2006

Silverbacks Stadium, Atlanta, GA

Overview:

The Whitecaps extended their undefeated run to five games with a 2-2 tie on the road against the Atlanta Silverbacks. However, the Caps have to be disappointed after seeing a two goal lead slip away in the second half. An early goal from Martin Nash and a second-half strike by Dave Morris looked to have put the Whitecaps in control of the match, however the two goal lead only lasted a minute, as Atlanta started their comeback.

The Whitecaps record goes to 4W-1L-7T for 19 points as they remain in second place in the USL First Division standings. It was an opportunity lost, as Vancouver would have moved into first place with a win after the Rochester Raging Rhinos were held to a 2-2 tie at home to the Portland Timbers. Rochester at 5-0-5 and 20 points to maintain a one point lead on Vancouver. Atlanta are now 2-4-3 for 9 points.

The Whitecaps are in action again Sunday in Charleston against the 3-3-3 Battery. They then return home for a game Sunday, June 25 against the Puerto Rico Islanders starting at 7:00 p.m., preceded at 4:00 p.m. by the Whitecaps Women against the Fort Collins Force in a Swangard Stadium doubleheader.

Scoring Summary:

13' - Vancouver - Martin Nash

Vancouver earned a free kick at the top of the penalty arc, after Geordie Lyall was fouled by Silverbacks midfielder Tony McManus. Nash blasted it low in to the bottom corner for his first of the season.

64' - Vancouver - Dave Morris

A long ball from the right finds Morris in the box and he tucks it in for his first goal on the year.

65' - Atlanta - Machel Millwood

Atlanta responded immediately as Milwood broke in on the left and blasted it into the top corner at the near post.

78' - Atlanta - Jason McLaughlin

A poor clearance was put back in the box by Atlanta, where goalkeeper Tony Caig wasn't able to come up with the ball, allowing Atlanta's leading scorer to equalise.

Game Notes:

Atlanta's best chance of the half came on a 23-yard free kick by Chilean midfielder Rodrigo Ríos at 32' as his shot hit the junction of the post and crossbar. The Silverbacks top scorer Jason McLaughlin also came close at 36', sending a shot whistling wide.

Joey Gjertsen caused chaos in the box after receiving a long throw-in at 33'. He kept his feet under a challenge while trying to make space, but wasn't able to get a clear shot away.

The game was interrupted for 18 minutes at the 58' mark, after the floodlights went out temporarily in the newly constructed stadium.

The Whitecaps had several chances in the second half to add to their lead. A blast from Steve Kindel at 47' was stopped with difficulty by Atlanta goalkeeper Felipe Quintero; Joey Gjertsen fired wide after a good run at 66'; Jeff Clarke had the ball in dangerous position at 70', but couldn't get a shot away.

Both teams pushed for the winning goal in the late stages. Vancouver's David Testo grazed the top of the bar with a shot at 80', and straight back the other way Atlanta's Machel Millwood sent a diving header wide. Geordie Lyall headed just over at 84', Martin Nash shot high in injury time, and the last chance of the game fell to Atlanta's Warren Ukah who fired over the bar from the top of the area.

This was the first tie between Vancouver and Atlanta in 12 meetings.
