USL D1 - June 4 - Toronto vs Virginia Beach [R]

Easily the best preformance by the Lynx this season. I'm guessing the Mariners were tired out after last nights match in Rochester. The Lynx looked the better team today. One goal was called back, because of an offside, I think it was Jeffery who was the culprit. Near the end Helinho took a free-kick from about 20 metres out, and nailed the post. Toronto had a couple more chances soon after but they lacked finishing. It was a fairly good match, considering this was the Lynx. Over on USLfans.com, they said the attendance was 800 or so, it was easily the lowest attendence I've seen at at Lynx game, it was a shame too since it was a beautiful day, partialy cloudy, 20 degrees celsius.

Result of the Sunday June 4th, 2006 USL game between Toronto Lynx and Virginia Beach Mariners played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 6:00pm.

Final Score:….Toronto Lynx……..0………..Virginia Beach Mariners……….0……….

Attendance wasn’t announced but someone reliable estimated it as 350 to 400 on this warm, sunny evening. This is only their third home game of the year and I could believe there was probably a CSL match somewhere in our city that outdrew this.

The team gets their first point of the year with this tie that goes with their opening six losses. They have still only scored one goal in seven games and stay last in the twelve team league. When I got out of my car from the parking lot, I heard Shania Twain’s song “Man I Feel Like A Woman” and I thought that may be an omen that they would imitate the Lady Lynx and score some goals. The Lady Lynx earned their fourth shutout in four games last night in Sudbury and has scored a minimum of three goals in every game.

Theo Zagar earned the shutout for the Lynx and Matthew Nelson did the same for the Mariners. Both had to be alert but there weren’t any spectacular saves needed. Both teams had more misses that could have given a win to their team. The Lynx actually looked more threatening than the Mariners in the second half and kept the pressure on.

The Mariners main threat was ex-Lynx player and Bermudian international John Barry Nusum. At 12 minutes Nusum gets a shot on a bouncer into box and the ball deflected off a defender over the net. At 24 minutes, he leapt to get a header on a long 50 yard shot into box but he bounced a 10 yarder to the goalie. At 34 minutes he flicked and 8 yard header on a leap wide left of net. At 40 minutes Alan Woods crossed from the left had Nusum head the ball over the net when he popped the ball up from 15 yards. Nusum was the target for everything in the box because of his height but it also made him the target for tackles. Rick Titus drew a Yellow card at 39 minutes for a crunching hit on Nusum at the Lynx 35 yard line. At 64 minutes, Nusum was running even with Titus for a ball but slipped up on the right and was injured at the Lynx 20 yard line. This had been the third time he’d been hurt in the game. The Mariners finally subbed him at 74 minutes. The most dangerous Mariners chance was in first half injury time when Ryan Mack got a through pass from Kupono Low on the left that he pushed forward and leapt the sliding tackle but the ball was already behind the end line when he crossed into the outside webbing of the net. Great job of Zagar not pulling him down for a Penalty or Red card.

The Lynx started with the forward combo of (local boy) Damien Pottinger who’s come over from the USL Division 2 side Pittsburgh Riverhounds and the Brazilian Neto. Pottinger started off well looking threatening for the first half. Neto was replaced by Matthew Palleschi at 38 minutes. Palleschi looked like the fastest player on the field but couldn’t get away clear shots. He was knocked over a few times but held his temper. New striker Kevin Jeffrey who played last year for Richmond Kickers made his debut at the 65 minute mark replacing Pottinger. He actually walked the ball into the Mariners net at 68 minutes but was ruled offside. He had a 25 yard freekick from the right that bent in and hit the left goal post and deflected back over to the right where the Lynx kept up the pressure but couldn’t get away a clear shot. In second half injury time he crossed through the box from the right and Gordon Chin slid a half step behind from connecting at 3 yards from the left post. A minute later Darren Baxter took a cornerkick from the left that had Rick Titus head the ball over the bar from 10 yards in a crowd of players in the box.

Before I say the Lynx would have scored if the game had gone an extra five minutes, we’ve got to keep in mind that the Mariners had played in Rochester the night before and earned a come from behind 2-2 tie so must have been tired in the second half. Also one of their star forwards, Gregory Simmonds, had Green card problems and couldn’t cross the border into Canada. The Lynx should have scored and now the monkey on their back gets heavier. Their next game is next Sunday against Montreal Impact and Canada’s national team goalie Greg Sutton. No reason why Sutton shouldn’t be looking for a shutout in this game.

Date: June 4, 2006

Venue: Centennial Park Stadium, Toronto, Ontario

Attendance: 810

Kick Off Time: 6:00 PM EST

Final Score: Toronto 0 Virginia Beach 0

Match Summary:

The Toronto Lynx picked up their first point of the season this evening, playing to a 0-0 draw against the Virginia Beach Mariners at Centennial Park Stadium.

Virginia Beach came close to taking the lead in the 12th minute after John Barry Nusum received a pass in Toronto’s box. His shot came off of a defender and sailed just over Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar’s goal. Nusum’s chance was the only clear-cut chance of the first half.

It was 0-0 after a defensively minded first half which featured only seven shots between both clubs.

Toronto came close to taking the lead early in the second half. Damian Pottinger volleyed a low cross in the 47th minute that was partially blocked by a Mariner’s defender, sending it just wide of Matt Nelson’s goal.

Toronto came close again in the 68th minute when Joe Mattachione contolled a passs with his chest inside Virginia Beach’s box. His turn eluded his marker, but with only Mariner’s ‘keeper Nelson to beat, he fanned on his shot leaving the game scoreless.

Virginia Beach had an excellent chance to break the deadlock in the 75th minute when Steve Shack headed a free kick from the right flank just centimetres wide of Zagar’s goal.

The 87th minute saw the best chance of the match. Toronto’s newly acquired Trinidadian striker Kevin Jeffrey hit a free-kick that made it past the wall and beat Mariner’s ‘keeper Nelson, but came off of the right bar.

Toronto continued to press in the dying stages of the match but Virginia Beach held off Toronto’s late offensive surge, and it was 0-0 as the final whistle sounded.

Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar made one stop towards his shutout this evening, while his Virginia Beach counterpart Matt Nelson made two stops.

Today’s result was the first point Toronto has picked up this season. Toronto improves to 0-6-1 as a result of today’s match and remains in 12th position of the USL First Division.

The clock is ticking on the Lynx. It will be an absolute shame if they fold, considering they have produced more talent for our national team than both the Whitecaps and Impact.

If they fold, it will certainly minimize any positives that may come from Toronto FC, as I doubt the new MLS club will be able to match the Lynx for developing Canadian talent over the past 10 years. (that's assuming that TO will be around for 10 years).

They are Torontonians...not sure they have an interest in running a team anywhere other than Toronto....I know someone who is a neighbour/friend of theirs and I asked the same question "why do they do it".....he honestly thinks that they just love the game and the city and feel duty bound to keep soccer going here.

LYNX GET SCORELESS TIE ON VIRGINIA'S SECOND GAME THIS WEEKEND

Rhinos fight rain and Mariners to remain unbeaten

Rochester, NY - June 3rd, 2006

The Rochester Raging Rhinos and the Virginia Beach Mariners played to a 2-2 tie in the grand opening of PAETEC Park on Saturday night. A sold out crowd of 13, 768 witnessed the historic opening in driving rain and wind.

Former Rhino Greg Simmonds opened the scoring in the 57th minute. Rochester's Charles Gbeke scored his second goal of the season to tie the game 1-1. The goal came on a diving header off a cross from Rey Martinez, who entered the game less than 10 minutes earlier. In the 89th minute, Johnny Menyongar punched home a rebound to give the Rhinos the lead. It was all but over as the Mariners crawled back to net the equalizer in the 90th minute. Steve Shak punched a shot past Rhinos goalkeeper Scott Vallow, ending the game in a tie.

The Rhinos (5-0-3, 18 points) remain unbeaten on the season and travel to Virginia Beach on Friday, June 9th at 7:30 p.m. to face the Mariners once again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Starters: GK-Vallow, D-Bertz, Sanfilippo, Palguta, Perry M-Ball, DaSilva, Steele, Menyongar, F-Howes, Delicate

ROC Substitutions: Gbeke-->Ball (57'), Craft-->Perry (62'), Ambersley-->Steele (69'), Martinez-->DaSilva (75')

Scoring: VB-Simmonds (Fenger) 57', ROC-Gbeke (Martinez) 82', ROC-Menyongar (Delicate) 89', VB-Shak (Woods) 90'

Attendance: 13,768 (sold out)

ROC Cautions: Perry (20'), Ball (52')

Referees: Ken Heller, Kevin Barci, Franco Bevilacqua, Thomas Mingle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grand Beginnings: Tonight's Head Referee Ken Heller has the pleasure of calling the first ever game at PAETEC Park. Heller was the head referee in the Rhinos' first ever match in 1996. "Being appointed to take charge of the first match at PAETEC Park is a great honor for me. I'm over the moon about starting things off in one of the few proper soccer stadiums in the country. To have two great clubs as Virginia Beach and the Rhinos in the opener makes it even more fantastic. I had the pleasure of whistling the Rhinos' first-ever match, played at the University of Rochester. It was a hectic night as an overflow crowd jammed into the small stadium. I remember the satellite feed had problems and everyone had to wait around an additional 20 minutes to accommodate the television people. The atmosphere that night was explosive. The game ended 1-1 against a team from Westchester, NY. I feel fortunate to have been involved in Rochester's debut in USL and in this new beginning. It's great for the USL and the supporters of the Rhinos. As more teams build grounds like PAETEC Park, the league will continue to grow."

Milestones: Rhinos Athletic Trainer Dave DiPasquale is currently in his 10th season with the team. His dedication and determination in the training room throughout the years have led to multiple championships. Goalkeeper Scott Vallow is six shutouts away from the all-time franchise record of 36, set by Pat Onstad.

Next Game: The Rhinos travel to Virginia Beach on Friday, June 9th to face the Mariners at 7:30 p.m. in the final of three straight matches together. The game will be broadcast live on Fickle 93.3-FM and webcast on www.ifickle.com. Broadcaster Don Stevens is in his 11th season as the "Voice of the Rhinos."
