SCORING SENSATION TO JOIN LYNX

Deana Everrett named to W-League Team of the Week

THURSDAY MAY 18, 2006[TORONTO, ON] The Toronto Lynx announced today the signing of high-scoring striker Kevin Jeffrey. The Trinidadian most recently played with the Richmond Kickers, and helped lead the squad to a shoot-out loss to Seattle in the USL First Division Final in 2005. He will be joining the club as soon as his international clearance is received and all of his travel documents have been finalized.

Jeffrey has scored 52 times in 6 seasons of A-League/USL-1 play with both the San Francisco Bay Seals and the Richmond Kickers. His pure scoring ability will be welcomed by head coach Duncan Wilde who has seen his club shut out in all three matches played so far. “He is the type of player who can make a difference immediately for our squad. The league is highly competitive this year and we’ll be in a tight battle for a playoff spot. We have struggled to find the net and with Jeffrey as a proven talent in our league he will help us immensely. We are looking forward to having him on the pitch with our boys”, said Wilde when reached for comment.

EVERRETT NAMED TO TEAM OF THE WEEK

Lady Lynx forward Deana Everrett was named to the W-League Team of the Week hot on the heels of her stunning five-goal performance against the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday afternoon at Centennial Park Stadium. The second year player set a team record with the feat, breaking her own mark of 4 set last season against the Rochester Ravens

LADY LYNX SET TO HOST VERMONT THIS SUNDAY

The Toronto Lady Lynx welcome the Vermont Lady Voltage to Centennial Park Stadium this Sunday, May 21 at 4:00 PM as the team celebrates Mother and Daughter Day. The Lady Lynx defeated the Lady Voltage three times last season, including a 3-1 overtime win in the team’s inaugural match on May 15, 2005 and in a 6-0 rout on July 27 at Centennial in a first-round playoff match-up.

Coach Danny Stewart hopes to build on a strong 7-0 win over the Rochester Rhinos in the Lady Lynx’ opener last weekend, as the club marches on towards a W-League playoff spot in 2006. Lady Lynx fans can still get tickets through the Lady Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31.

LYNX HEAD WEST

The Lynx USL First Division squad make their second west-coast trip of the young season as they visit both Seattle and Portland for matches this weekend. On Saturday, the club heads into Qwest Field in Seattle to tackle the defending USL-1 Champion Sounders, with a 10:00 PM EDT kickoff. Like the Lynx, the Sounders are still searching for their first win of the season, sporting a 0-2-1 record after three matches following a 2-1 loss to Rochester last night in Seattle. The following evening the Lynx travel to Portland where they will take on the host Timbers, who sit with a 1-3-1 record after five matches this season.

Forward Matthew Palleschi will miss the two matches after being assessed a two-game suspension for a violent tackle against Rochester on Saturday. Palleschi’s absence will be felt by the club as they have yet to find the net this season, being held goalless in each of their first three matches. Defender Tony Menezes returns to the line-up after sitting out Saturday’s match with a lower-body injury suffered while training with the Canadian Men’s National Team in Fort Lauderdale early in May.

Even though I realize it is the Lynx, with the amount of hype over the international signing I was expecting someone a bit more impressive. He only scored 4 goals in 21 games last year and 8 in 26 the year before.

I must confess that I felt the same way. Describing him as a "scoring sensation" is a bit strong considering he has scored 52 goals in 6 seasons. While that is a respectable 8.7 goals per season and obviously the Lynx need him desperately, he has been overhyped IMO.

That said, I hope he goes on a tear and scores 20 this year.
