FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spartans Finish Year with Draw

TWU and Canada’s U20 team tie 1-1

LANGLEY, British Columbia – It was a beautiful sunny day Saturday afternoon at Trinity Western University Spartan Field – a perfect day for soccer. TWU’s men’s soccer team and the Canadian U20 National team did not disappoint the 300 plus fans as the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw.

The match was fast paced and skillfully played game, which saw the Spartans take an early lead on a goal by TWU’s Justin Cordick in the third minute. Canada had the edge in shots 15-9, but they were unable to get a ball past TWU keeper Tyler DeJong for most of the match. The U20 team was finally rewarded for their efforts in the 76th minute on a spectacular goal by Jaime Peters.

"Today’s match was an impressive performance for our ‘boys’ and a great way to finish off 2005-2006. We played well and showed a lot of heart and character,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “It was a great game as both teams created numerous scoring opportunities and each had some nice spells of possession. I enjoyed watching the way the Canadians moved the ball today and all of us wish them the best as they take on Brazil.”

The Spartans goal was a result of TWU forward Josh McCaig beating his defender and playing diagonal ball perfectly into the box, where Cordick was waiting. Cordick then took the ball and slotted it past Canadian keeper Asmir Begovic and into the bottom left corner of the net.

Canada’s Jaime Peters goal to tie the game was the most amazing play of the match. Canadian teammate Hector Contreras volleyed a ball into the middle of the box, where Peters hit a perfectly timed “bicycle” kick up and over the outstretched hands of TWU’s DeJong.

“The game showed the promise we have for next season. All of the ‘boys’ will be returning, with the exception of fifth year forward Drew Roddy,” said Alderson “We will also be adding a handful top quality players for in the fall. In addition to having our Captain Nic Perugini back, who is currently away in Montreal and having Josip Maras return from injury. "

Canada will now continue their preparation for their three match series against Brazil’s U20 national team. The two squads will play May 19th in Edmonton, May 22nd in Victoria and May 25th at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.

Match Notes: TWU’s Tyler DeJong was solid in the net for the Spartans as he finished the match with two saves…Canada’s Asmir Begovic made four saves for the U20 squad…each team had six corner’s…while TWU committed eight fouls to Canada’s four…The Canadian National Team were missing six of their players who are currently playing in Europe.
