RJB
It's been raining for most of the morning, and in fact just stopped. That should make for a somewhat wet pitch and will have an effect on the styles of play, surely. Good luck tonight. I'll be there in blue.
DJT
As usual with Whitecaps play-by-play man Peter Schaad, there are plenty of Voyageurs Cup mentions in the radio broadcast. Nick Dasovic is the fill-in colour commentator this week, and he talked about it as well, mentioning how this is an important match if the Whitecaps want to finally get their hands on the trophy, and he even asked Geordie Lyall about it. Starting lineups (I probably got the left-right orderings wrong): VANCOUVER Wicks Kindel, Cann, Klein, Jones Valente, Alberts, Nash, Clarke Gjertsen, Jordan TORONTO Zagar Titus, Menezes, Arango, Williams Mattachione, Dodds, Baxter, Bedenikovic DiPlacido, Palleschi Match just kicked off, 6 minutes in, nothing much happening yet... DJT
Halfway through the first half, no score. Vancouver have had a few good chances, but aren't dominating (at least compared to the start of the Portland match last week).
DJT
Halftime: Vancouver 1 Toronto 0 44' Gjertsen More of the same in the second part of the half. Play is mostly in Toronto's end, a few good shots/chances by Vancouver until the goal by Gjertsen off a free kick played into the box, though not exactly Whitecap dominance. Doesn't seem to be any offensive build-up by Toronto; I think they said Palleschi is playing as the lone striker, despite how the starting lineup was announced. BTW, the Lynx just flew into Vancouver this morning. [V]

(attendance: 4,555) Overview: The Whitecaps blanked the Toronto Lynx 2-0 Saturday night, to pick up their second straight win of the young season, and move into first place overall in the USL First Division. Shortly before halftime, striker Joey Gjertsen scored the winning goal for the second game in a row, while new signing Sita-Taty Matondo put the game away with a superb solo effort. Goalkeeper Josh Wicks picked up his second consecutive shutout, making three saves on eight shots. The Whitecaps next game is on the road as they head to Portland on Friday, May 5 for a rematch with the Timbers. They then return for a three-game home stand, starting Sunday, May 14 against the Minnesota Thunder, a 7:00 p.m. start at Swangard Stadium. Scoring Summary: 45' Vanc Joey Gjertsen (Alfredo Valente) Alfredo Valente's high cross from the left was weakly palmed by Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar while challenging Jeff Clarke for the ball. It fell to Gjertsen 10 yards out, and he blasted a rising shot into the far side of the net. 82' Vanc Sita-Taty Matondo Matondo picked up the ball in midfield then did it all himself, running at the Toronto defence, cutting into the middle, and firing a low left-footer from the edge of the box into the bottom right corner of the net beyond the reach of Zagar. It was the first league goal as a Whitecap for the former Lynx player. Game Notes: The Whitecaps had problems penetrating a strong Toronto defence led by former Vancouver player Rick Titus and Canadian international Tony Menezes. Joey Gjertsen had the first quality chance, as his shot from the edge of the box at 26' was blocked by goalkeeper Theo Zagar who smothered the rebound before Jason Jordan could get to it. At 42' Zagar made a kick save off a sharp-angle blast from Alfredo Valente on the left. The Caps out-shot Toronto 8-2 in the first half. Jason Jordan had a great chance to get on the scoresheet at 59', when a quick free kick from Martin Nash sent the striker in on goal in close. But nose to nose with the keeper and with defenders on his heels, Jordan was knocked off his feet, and couldn't get a shot away. Despite appeals for a penalty, referee Dave Gantar waived play on. Toronto's best chances came in the second half, but Josh Wicks was solid in the Vancouver goal. At 53' he easily held a long hard shot from Marko Bedenikovic, then showed good reactions to snare a header from Tony Menezes off a corner kick at 72'. Then in the 90th minute, Wicks did well to hold a hard shot from Jeremy Shepherd. This game counts towards the Voyageurs Cup, the fan-sponsored competition between Vancouver, Toronto, and the Montreal Impact, who have won it the last four years. Joey Gjertsen was named UMBRO Player of the Game for the second straight game. With two goals in as many games, he is only one goal shy of equaling his total for all last season. Defender John Jones got the start to make his Whitecaps debut. Midfielder Martin Nash has played 38 consecutive games, spanning three seasons. Toronto experienced considerable pressure in the first half as Vancouver registered 8 shots, while Toronto only managed 2. Lynx 'keeper Theo Zagar made three saves throughout the first half but was beaten right before the halftime whistle. In injury time Joseph Gjertsen blasted into Toronto's goal from 10 yards out after after Alfredo Valente's cross was ineffectually palmed away by Zagar. Toronto came out from the break looking for an equalizer and immediately attacked Vancouver's goal. Toronto's efforts were continuously denied by Vancouver goalkeeper Josh Wicks who was impressive in goal tonight. Toronto had an excellent chance to equalise in the 72nd minutes off of a corner, but Wicks denied Menezes' header from the set-piece. Vancouver made it 2-0 against the run of play in the 82nd minute when former Lynx forward Sita-Taty Matondo picked up a loose ball outside of Toronto's box and fired a shot from 20 yards out past Zagar. RJB
Decent game. The 'Caps were very solid defensively and didn't give Toronto even a sniff at goal. Offensively, they weren't deadly. Jason Jordan seems to be struggling. There was an incident at about 55-60 minutes where he was put through from the top of the 18. Rather than turn and slot it, like a confident striker, he tried to dribble it in, and then was left rueing for a penalty. He seems to have no confidence. Wicks 7 - Untested. Jones 6 - Played OK, but wasn't the same threat down the flank that Lyall tends to be. Cann 8 - He is an absolute rock back there. Where did he come from? Klein 8 - Like Cann, Klein was solid through and through. Kindel 6 - Again, Steve just waits to long on the ball. He doesn't run into the space down the wing like he needs to, with his speed. Alberts 6 - Came off early second game in a row. He mustn't be fit. Valente 6 - Not threatening like he should be. Clarke 6 - Worked hard, but needs to be stronger on the ball. Nash 6 - Not in the game much Gjertsen 7 - Well taken goal. Jordan 5 - JJ is playing poorly. He isn't running, and is too apt to get on his teammates for their poor service, when he needs to get moving.
RJB
I forgot to mention, did anyone notice that after Matondo scored, and ran to the corner, none of the Whitecaps got down there to celebrate with him? The guy scores his first goal, and is pumped and there are no teammates there to get his back. I can understand Jordan, because he wouldn't want to run that far, but the others gotta get there. analyst
I agree with most of what RJB said except for two points. First Wicks was tested a few times and did well when tested. Second Cann made a few mistakes but then so did everyone else, on both teams. Jones looked really slow. The game was boring. Gjertsen was the best Cap, he ran a lot, scored once due to a Zagar blunder and had another good chance. Menezes looked good for the Lynx, and #17 had a good game for the Lynx, not sure who he was. Guest Jeffery S.
So my prediction has come true and Caig has already lost the starting spot everyone assumed he was signed for? Funny how one report says he had some good stops but others insist he was untested. Nice way to slag a player on your team, guys. If Nash is not into things, if he is coasting as he did for large chunks of games last year, who would be the person to replace him? Just curious.
