red bull huge drop in attendance

Well....this weekend had no NY home game amongst the 6 games played and attendance got the boost of having Chicago open their new stadium.

Combined with the Galaxy playing at home (to what seems like a typical +/- 17k crowd) that brought the weekend average up to almost 15k (14,902 to be exact).....all-in-all, a better weekend for the league...not where I would (if I had money invested) expect them to be at this stage, but better.

oops....5 games played on the 28th of june produced only one crowd over 10k (Chicago got just under 11k for their second official game at the new stadium). The average for the 5 matches was 8,869!

On July 1.....the crowds were:

New England at home got 9,424 against New York (this ain't no Red Sox v Yankees rivalry!)

KC at home to LA Galaxy got a huge crowd of 21,936 (not sure if there was a concert or double header involved here but if there was not this is very good!)

Chivas were at home to FC Dallas and played in front of 10,112.

So the average for the 3 games on July 1st.....13,824 not very good!

According to the KC fans on BigSoccer, there were fireworks after the game, and the Wizards have been heavily marketed in the KC area during the World Cup.

Good for them......even in Arrowhead...22k is a big enough crowd that there would have been atmosphere!

Bit of a mixed bag there..........MLS has to be really happy with the Rapids crowd...pleased by the RSL and LA crowds.....satisfied with the Dallas gathering.....disappointed by the Fire attendance (after one good crowd in the new SSS they have had really declined and this independance day number must be a concern)....and concerned by the Houston numbers!

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that ESPN will pay a yearly rights fee of $7.5 million (US) to broadcast MLS games.

quote:ESPN is hungry for new fans because it is upping its commitment to soccer. The network has agreed to pay $100 million for the rights to the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, as well as the 2007 and 2011 Women's World Cups. Starting next year, ESPN is expected to pay about $7.5 million a year to continue showing the U.S. pro league, Major League Soccer.

Not exactly NFL money, but it's worth noting that the Arena Football League, which was paying NBC to air its games, has been cut from the NBC lineup as of September.

Rain in Houston. Planned fireworks were scrubbed as a result.

Rapids crowd was a blip given that they attendance is no more than about a fifth of what they would normally get.

No argument here, although the July 4th crowd was not really a blip when considering that Colorado always gets crowds of 35-40,000 for their Independence Day games.

Now that need to figure out how to get those fans to go to other matches. It may not matter so much, as this year was the last July 4th that Colorado had in Invesco Field. They move into their much smaller (18,000) SSS next season.

Interesting to note that the USL First Division has shrunk from a league high of 29 teams a few years ago to it's current 12 teams. Here's the USL First Division attendance figures for last year:

1 Montreal Impact 11,176

2 Rochester Raging Rhinos 9,570

3 Portland Timbers 5,553

6 Charleston Battery 3,649

7 Minnesota Thunder 3,135

8 Seattle Sounders 2,885

9 Richmond Kickers 2,654

Any idea how the Rhinos are doing this year attendance wise? Didn't they move to a new stadium this year?

ESPN isn't NBC. NBC is an "Air" where everyone with a TV can get it for free, while ESPN is cable and come with a cost.

Thanks for that tele-communications lesson!!! Where would we be without you? I mean, really!

Colorado... yikes.

Houston played through a thunderstorm, so that 11,000+ number is actually rather surprising.

I have actually read recently that it hasn't stopped raining in Houston for weeks so all of their attendances need to take that into account (given it is a "walk-up" driven league).

Looks like all the Colorado fans saw their one game this year last week!

Just seems to me that the league is "stuck" in that +/- 12k average every week......not sure how sustainable the league (or the growth) is if they do not find a way to boost that.

those are some very very NASL 1984 numbers..

I'm sure the only problem with the gate in Denver was a lack of promotion. They simply failed to mention the next game during the July 4th game. Mistakes like that happen all the time..

As usual Rudi, you missed it.

More people have access to NBC than people who have access to ESPN.

Being on NBC is big leagues. Being on ESPN is well, Minor league.

So MAJOR league baseball is minor league now? MLB is always on ESPN and every once in a while on Fox. This is the same as MLS. MLS is always on cable, and sometimes on ABC. Its the same deal.

Wrong.

Fox carries the weekly Saturday game on it's main network. FSN and ESPN fill in the void with national cable and regional broadcasts.

That kind of a goal is what MLS can only dream of at this point.

Ever go to the ESPN website? The MLS is burried deep in it's soccer page. But the NHL, NBA, NFL, NASCAR get their own pages...

Tell that to the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA, NCAA, etc.

I'm sure they're really upset by being on such a minor league, unknown network as ESPN.

As usual G-Man, you missed it. The Arena Football League (a comparable league to MLS) is no longer on NBC. While MLS continues its relationship with ESPN and ABC.

You and your little troll teammate DoyleG have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about in this regard, so please just give us all a break.

How many games does MLS have on ABC? a paltry 3 a year. Arena League had more games on NBC than MLS has on NBC. Of course, all other leagues have better telvision contracts than MLS.

Why don't you do the would a favour and STFU.
