apperantly the whitecaps want that new serbian guy Zoran Milosevic but he refuses to play for 1000$ a month as it is no where near the pay he got in europe even though the whitecaps agreed to pay him 5,000$ a month before he came here but the budget is so low while this stadium is being built.

Don't know if this has been officially announced but :

- Andrew Weber (USA), former 3rd keeper of DC United, has signed with Montreal Impact.

- Serginho (playmaker) and Ruben Avelar (central defender), both from Portugal, are now players of the Vancouver Whitecaps. The first one is born on September 8, 1976. Last season, he plyed for Ovarense. Before : Chaves, Penafiel, Salgueiros, Felgueiras and Rio Ave. Man of the match : http://www.abola.pt/epocas/fichas/20052006/ligahonra/03/fj08.gif

Ruben Avelar is a 24 year old left footed defender from Uniao de Lamas. Also played for Ovarense and Santa Clara.

- Osni Neto (Brazil), who played for Vasco De Gama and the Brazilian U20 national team (in 98) is the new playmaker of the Toronto Lynx. Left footed, he's born on April 16th 1979. He also played for Mogi Mirim, Nautico, Santa Cruz, Coritiba, Remo and Palmeiras, with who he scored 23 goals in 2000.

Just to update the portugese players were cut. As was Milosevic and Piette. The Whitecaps have not had much success with foreign players, but reportedly are close to signing GK Tony Caig from Newcastle.

And player salaries have nothing to do with the Stadium as stated earlier. The stadium hasn't broken ground yet, and isn't expected to until late 2007.

As for Sebrango...he's not going to get a whack of minutes. The Whitecaps look to be in decent shape up front, but they need a big target man who scores BIG goals in BIG games, and has experience. The other thing he'll do is chase all game long.

Also Tony Menezes has reportedly signed with Toronto after several years in China and Brazil.

Does it seem possible that Tony is still only 31?? Good for him, though, I still will always have a soft spot for him. He always tried his ass off for us. I'm just a little surprised that he didn't come back to Canada earlier. Money talks though.

Vancouver's training camp roster is available at the following link:

http://www.whitecapsfc.com/news/?id=2782

I see that Carlos Garcia, who played briefly for the Impact last year, is trying out with the Caps as well.

This list of players is more impressive than training camp lists from previous years. The vets should get pushed by the newcomers trying for jobs.

Had Hubert Busby only had this line-up he could have won the W-league.

Forgive my ignorance but isn't Tyler Rosenlund in the Whitecaps system? I thought last year was his last at college and he would at least play for them this season?

TORONTO LYNX MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VETERAN TRIO RESIGN FOR 2006

THURSDAY APRIL 6, 2006 (TORONTO, ON) The Toronto Lynx announced the signing of four players in preparation for their 10th season which kicks off on April 22, 2006 when the Lynx head south to take on the Virginia Beach Mariners. Veterans Joe Mattacchione, Chris Williams and Robbie Aristodemo inked new contracts, while Marko Bedenikovic signed his first deal with the club.

Mississauga’s Mattacchione, in addition to serving as Assistant Coach, will be entering his seventh season with the club. The midfielder/defender has been a valuable leader both on and off the squad throughout the years and ranks in third place behind only David DiPlacido and Brian Ashton in games played over his career, with 147 appearances in the yellow and black. His veteran leadership will be key in helping the Lynx bounce back from a challenging season and contend for a playoff position.

Defender Williams returns for his sophomore season with the Lynx and will be counted on to anchor the Lynx defense which ranked second-last in the USL First Division in goals conceded last season. The Scarborough native has worn the maple leaf representing Canada on 23 occasions at various levels throughout his career, including 1 cap with the World Cup squad in January, 2003 versus the United States. His sister Jennifer is a member of the Lady Lynx, underscoring the tremendous soccer talent of this family.

Fan-favourite Aristodemo will join the club following the completion of the MISL playoffs. He is a key member of the Baltimore Blast who currently sit tied for second with one game remaining in the regular season schedule in this indoor league. The 2001 A-League Rookie of the Year and Lynx MVP will be playing his fifth season with the club and his team-mates will look to him to be the set-up man for the attack. His 11 career assists rank him behind only Niki Vignjevic in team history.

Rookie Bedenikovic joins the Lynx fresh off a championship in the CPSL in 2005 with the Oakville Blue Devils. The 21-year old defender from Mississauga brings a youthful presense to the defense and will push the veterans for playing time throughout the season.

“It’s important for us to retain our core of returning players,” said head Coach Duncan Wilde, “while complementing them with young local talent who can help lead the way for us in the future.”

Junior Lynx off to Scotland with Canadian U18 Squad

Winger Dane Roberts, from the Toronto Lynx Jrs. U-17 Squad has been selected by Canada’s Technical Director and Men’s U-18 National Team head coach, Richard Bate, to the Canada’s roster for the team’s upcoming two-game series against Scotland’s Schoolboys. The team travelled to Scotland on April 3 and will play the Scottish Schoolboys team on April 11th and 13th in Banffshire before returning home on the next day.

The 2006 Whitecaps play the VMSL all-stars tonight. This will be their toughest pre-season game so far. Last year, the Caps were lucky to beat the VMSL all-stars by a 2-1 score.

WHITECAPS WIN 2-0

Back

April 6, 2006 - The Whitecaps ran their pre-season record to 3-1, courtesy of an entertaining 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Metro Soccer League (VMSL) All-Stars at Tsawwassen's Brandrith Park Thursday night. Striker Joey Gjertsen got the Caps off to a lightning-fast start, converting the feed from Jeff Clarke just 30 seconds in, while many fans were still filing in. The young striker now has a goal and three assists to lead Vancouver in pre-season scoring.

Whitecaps coach Bob Lilley changed all ten of his outfield players at half-time, and the fresh legs soon had an impact. In the 62nd minute, new signing David Testo headed the ball forward, where the pace and persistence of Sita-Taty Matondo paid off, as he out-fought his marker for the ball and then slipped it past the keeper. It was the second goal of the pre-season for the former Toronto Lynx and Montreal Impact striker.

The All-Stars, representing the best players from the Vancouver Metro Soccer League, featured many former Whitecaps, including goalkeeper Mike Franks, winger Tiarnan King, and defender Jeff Skinner. However, the Whitecaps goalkeeping tandem of Josh Wicks and Serge Djekanovic, were rarely tested in sharing the shutout. The game came to a premature end after 85 minutes, when a failure in the lighting system plunged the field into darkness.

TORONTO LYNX MEDIA RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

VETERAN TRIO RESIGN FOR 2006

Two of the things that one can count on most in Canadian soccer are that the Lynx will have a crappy team and will misspell re-sign in their press releases. How many years have they been spelling it that way? At least 3 or 4 and it always draws comments yet they never correct the spelling. I am starting to suspect that the true identity of Luis Rancagua is the guy writing the Lynx press releases.

Am I missing something?? Like, uh, where did he play for last three years?? Evidently it wasn't at a reputable outdoor league level or preumably it would be on the stats listed here. Kind odd...

if you listen to the Bob Lilley interview we did the other night, he makes a comment about how a few of these players were "let go" after the FVSL Allstar match :)

Why did the Whitecaps let them go? Did they want too much money? Were they not imrpovements on the North Americn players? Was Lilley worried about the team chemistry if he signed them?

Some of them were with high level teams in Europe so it would have been nice to see them play for the Whitecaps. Some of them may have only been late game subs in Europe. I can't tell from he info the Caps put out.

He let them go because they were crap. Lower division European players are no better than top North American players, and if there's a language issue, it just becomes a pain in the ass. But none of the foreign players I saw at camp stood out in the least.

Jones and Noriega are both impressive additions.
