Posted March 10, 2006 Share Posted March 10, 2006 Marcel de Jong was subbed out at the half, apparently to bolster the defence, as Helmond Sport hung on away to Haarlem with a first half goal, winning 0-1. Marc Bircham's fearsome header on the stroke of half time proved priceless, as Gary Waddock's side weathered a second half storm to leave the Steel City with a plucky point. The Hoops midfielder - who was recalled to the starting line up after missing the home clash with Wolves due to illness seven days earlier - stooped to head home Lee Cook's 43rd minute free kick. Earlier, the Owls were ahead on 12 minutes, courtesy of Deon Burton's close range strike. The Jamaican international notched from inside the six yard box, after Glenn Whelan's sublime through ball from midfield cut open the entire Hoops defence. Hoops custodian Paul Jones was the hero of the hour during the second period, producing five top-drawer saves to keep the hosts at bay. Rangers threatened sporadically, with Cook calling Scott Carson into a neat save at his far post, but it was the home side who were left licking their wounds at full time, as the realisation of their relegation dog-fight started to hit home. Rangers Caretaker Manager Gary Waddock recalled midfield pair Steve Lomas and Bircham, with Richard Langley and Stefan Bailey the unlucky duo to miss out. Wednesday included recent loan signings Carson and Mikkel Bischoff, who joined from Liverpool and Manchester City respectively on Friday. Rangers were on the front foot almost immediately, with Cook's out-swinging cross narrowly evading the on-rushing Paul Furlong. On two minutes, Gareth Ainsworth's right foot curler from fully 25 yards forced Carson into a splendid stop, just when the ball seemed destined to nestle into the roof of the net. Play quickly switched to the other end, where Burton evaded his marker, only to see his powerful header superbly tipped round by Paul Jones. The Owls were winning the midfield battler early on and when Yoann Folly played a clever one-two with Marcus Tudgay, Matthew Rose was called into a terrific last ditch cover tackle to thwart the Southampton loanee from getting his shot away. Dan ****tu required treatment for a facial injury, before the Owls took the lead on 12 minutes. Whelan's deft through ball from the middle of the park was weighted to perfection and Burton nipped in to apply the finishing touch past the exposed Jones from the edge of the six yard box. Cook was beginning to have an impact as the half wore on, getting free of his marker on more than one occasion, only for his final ball to go missing all too often. Chris Brunt, who Waddock had earmarked as a danger-man before the trip North, broke free on 21 minutes, but ****tu was in the right place at the right time to divert the ball for a corner. New signing Bischoff marked his Owls debut with a booking for a lunge on Furlong on 23 minutes, much to the dismay of the home crowd, who thought their man took the ball. Mauro Milanese was getting forward to good effect, with his searching left sided cross narrowly evading Furlong at the front post in the 27th minute. Ainsworth's speculative 30 yard volley was easily held by Carson on the half hour, but it was Wednesday who continued to force the initiative, with Brunt and Burton at the heart of their positive display. Rangers drew level on the stroke of half time when Cook's superb in-swinging free kick was met by Bircham's powerful glancing at the near post. Carson stood no chance, as the ball nestled in the top corner of the net to the delight of the travelling Hoops faithful. Jones was Rangers' saviour a minute into the second half, firstly tipping away Tudgay's point blank strike, before flinging himself to his left to deny Burton from the edge of the penalty box. Seconds later, the Welsh stopper was at it again, twice denying Tudgay with what can only be described as world class saves, before Folly's follow up cannoned off the crossbar to safety. The Owls continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession and when Lee Bullen out-foxed Cook on the right flank, Burton arrived bang on cue only to head straight at Jones. There was simply no respite for the visitors, as the Owls - backed by a fanatical home crowd - continually forced the Superhoops to defend in numbers. Burton headed wide from ten yards after fine wide play from O'Brien, before Cook's bending set piece was tipped to safety by Carson with the match approaching the 70 minute mark. Rose judged his tackle on Burton to perfection just as the former Pompey striker seemed poised to test Jones yet again, while at the other end, substitute Langley ballooned his left footed shot well wide of the post. As the home side became increasingly frustrated, it was referee Andy D'Urso who bore the brunt of their annoyance. Both sides went in search of a winner, but despite five minutes of added time, it ended all square. There are five forwards competing for two spots in the starting lineup, but Occean has pretty much secured a spot with his six goals and great play during the winter. Not as good as a result as may have been hoped as AZ Alkmaar defeat Willem II and further close the gap for 2nd in the Eriedivisie. Since no one else has mentioned it, Richard Hastings of Inverness Caledonian Thistle also played the duration as Inverness held Hearts for a nil-nil draw. Haven’t read the reports yet but a grand result from a surprisingly game Inverness side this year. No Dodds for Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday. Kili are sent a 4-nil message by Rangers. Rangers scored two late as Kili #1 Alan Combe was sent off for a foul in the area. No Radz anywhere as Fulham visit Goodison Park and are promptly thumped 3-1. Two cracking goals by Everton’s two James (Beattie & McFadden). Not at all sure why Radz was left off the roster. Will have to do some digging. JB also played the 90 Saturday (a-gin) as Southampton allow a late one against Crewe Alex at Gresty Road and can only manage a 1-1 draw. Pesch only plays the last few minutes at Pride Park as Derby put the boots to Burnley leading 3-nil after a half hour and finishing off along the same score line.. Depor slips to 9th, though within sight of a UEFA spot. This Wednesday they play the 2nd leg of their King's Cup semi-final vs. Espanyol at home, after losing 2-1 away. Espanyol is one of the many sides to have beaten them at home this year as well. Still, if Depor can turn things around they have a Cup final vs. Zaragoza waiting for them at Madrid's Bernabeu on April 12th, think it is. It was to be proved a fine decision by Hunter as Jackson's pace threatened the home team for almost the entirety of the remaining 45+ minutes. Beevers was to trouble the defence with deft crosses but it was Nicholls yet again stoical against the enemy, again denying Yeo the opportunity to continue forays goalbound. The following 10 minutes or so were to follow a well-worn path of balls pumped long, balls returned, and balls kicked aimlessly around the middle of the park with little or no threat in either direction. A Nicholls delivery from deep in his own half found Berry, the cross was blocked, falling to Savage but the captain's shot was narrowly missed on the right. Following on, as Diamonds crept into the ascendancy, Marcus Kelly foraged but could only place his shot at a Lincoln defender. The diminutive Jackson then made a decent run on goal, but on the way over-ran the ball leaving Berry to shoot over. Berry was to leave the field, seemingly at the referees adjudication for treatment, but once the shirt was off it was not to be worn again and John Turner took his place among the Rushden attack for the remaining 25 minutes of play. From the 75th minute onwards, the massed ranks of Rushden & Diamonds found another previously unseen gear. Simi Jackson, who must surely be in with a chance of a starting position within the team very shortly, had the ball in the opposition net, unfortunately though this followed a shrill offside whistle. Three minutes later Turner was to repeat the feat, but again the Lincoln offside trap had done it's job of work. Undeterred by this, Turner stunned the home fans into silence seconds later. Collecting the ball some 20 yards out, he twice over turned his marker before almost casually rolling the ball into the bottom right hand corner of Marriott's net from that self-same distance as if time had stood still! The Diamonds were back in it, and it has to be admitted, deservedly so at that point. Almost the very next piece of action witnessed the culmination of the fight-back. Simeon Jackson will again see his name amongst the Football League scorers in the Sunday 'papers after a brilliant right footed volley from the right of goal found the top corner of the net. It was then backs to the wall from that moment onwards as Lincoln threw forwards everything in an attempt to salvage a point. Yeo fired wide when well placed, Okuonghae came on for Broughton, Cryan brought a clearance from Hatswell, Gulliver almost cleared the pitch with a hoof out, Bull did similar from a McCombe effort? nails were chewed to the quick in the away section and, don't tell anybody, but some people were even standing up! The time for keep-ball had arrived and any clearance henceforth was lumped to the far corners for much ankle-kicking and time-wasting. Away in the distance of the benches the fourth official had found four extra minutes from somewhere and the agony was to be prolonged, prolonged just 5 seconds too long for Diamonds as McCombe's unmarked bullet header bulged the net behind a despairing, distraught Tynan. Out of sympathy for the convention of the game, the match restarted with two blasts of the referee's whistle, the first for commencement, the second for finality. Diamonds are left rock bottom by a point after a Torquay victory over Peterborough. The manner of the fight-back will assuage some of the concerns, but the serial repetition of the inability to hold on to the lead in the final seconds of a match bites a lot, lot deeper. Most travellers would have been pleased with a point pre-match, but to have two snatched away from you in such a dramatic scene is amongst the bitterest pills a fan has to swallow. He has been involved with the current U-20 program and we might see him in the U-20 tournament in Portugal next month (but maybe he'll be busy with his club at that time). Kenny was named MVP for the Start match. I believe Start finished in 2nd place last season, so they are a very strong club. Kenny has been rotated throughout the preseason, sharing the goalkeeping duties with TIL's veteran keeper. TIL's keeper is considered one of the best in Norway, but Kenny has made it known in the media that he intends to challenge for the starting position. Although initially signed as a back-up, the coaching staff obviously realize that Kenny is a strong keeper (or he wouldn't be seeing significant action in preseason), and appear to be preparing Kenny for some action.
