Austria v Canada (Wien/Ernst Happel Stadion)

March 1 — Ernst Happel Stadion — Vienna

830pm CET/2:30 p.m. ET

Television: ORF1 (Austria). Pre-game starts at 2:15 p.m.

Match updates (in German): http://derstandard.at and http://www.sport1.at

Referee: Dick van Egmond (Ned)

Forecast: -4C at kickoff. Partly cloudy after three days of flurries.

News: Austrian and1. FC Kaiserlslautern keeper Jürgen Macho left the game in Mainz Saturday with a lower arm break (Unterarmbruch) and will be replaced in the squad by Andreas Schranz from GAK. Helge Payer of Rapid Vienna will start in goal I would assume. Payer was a good bet to start anyway.

The Austrians are also without defender Martin Stranzl of VfB Stuttgart in Germany who injured his leg in their UEFA Cup match against Middlesbrough.

Markus Schopp (shoulder) and Sanel Kuljic (knee) both also injured themselves and pulled out of the team. Michael Mörz of SV Mattersburg takes a spot on the squad.

Only 9,000 tickets sold as of Friday.

Hmmm... I'm not too happy to hear about the temperature at the kickoff. [:0]

Daytime high of -2C scheduled for Wednesday. How cold was it in Luxembourg? It certainly didn't look warm. Maybe the forecast will change in the next couple of days.

cheers,

matthew

That doesn't sound too good, but then again they might have big walkup numbers. Ernst Happel Stadion has a capacity of 48,000 so hopefully it can be at least half full (24,000-ish would be nice)

According to bigapplesoccer.com, Adrian Serioux will not play in the Austria match due to a broken toe.

Jurgen Macho, Austria's number one GK, is out with a broken arm. He was slated to play against Canada.

Here's the article:

-------------------------------

Austria goalkeeper Jürgen Macho faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after breaking his left arm during 1. FC Kaiserslautern's 2-0 victory at 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday. The 28-year-old was replaced by 19-year-old debutant Florian Frommlowitz two minutes before half-time following a collision with Mainz striker Michael Thurk and underwent surgery that night. Austria coach Josef Hickersberger is likely to turn to SK Rapid Wien's Helge Payer for Wednesday's friendly against Canada.

From the CSA:

Canada Arrives in Vienna - Injury Keeps Stalteri in London

Vienna, Austria – Canada’s Men’s National Team have all arrived in Austria ahead of Wednesday’s friendly in Vienna.

The last two players to arrive were FC Brugge’s Mike Klukowski and Fulham’s Tomasz Radzinski. Both players were busy with their clubs on Sunday – Radzinski playing 75 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Bolton while Brugge and Standard Liege shared the points in a vital top of the table clash in the Belgian First Division.

But one of Canada’s most experienced defender’s, Paul Stalteri, was not on the field when Canada held its first training session this afternoon.

On Friday, February 12, the Canadian defender fractured his thumb in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland at The Stadium of Light.

Canada’s Head Coach, Frank Yallop, had hoped that the injury would have fully healed by the time his squad landed in Austria but it appears as though there is still some concern over the injury.

Therefore, Tottenham manager Martin Jol and Canada boss Frank Yallop have both agreed that it would be in the best interest of both Spurs and Stalteri for the Brampton-native to remain in London during the International Break to ensure the thumb heals properly.

Stalteri’s place in the squad will not be replaced.

Injuries Hit Austrians Too

Injuries have also forced the Austrians to make several changes to their squad. Austrian head coach Josef Hickersberger has had to replace four injured players in his first game in charge of Austria. The former Rapid Vienna manager has lost the services of goalkeeper Jürgen Macho, Markus Schoop, Sanel Kuljic and Markus Katzer. Replacing the four will be goalkeeper Andreas Schranz, striker Roland Kollmann, midfielder Michael Morz and defender Ronald Gercaliu.

Homecoming for Jazic

Halifax-native and Canadian defender/midfielder Ante Jazic will be celebrating a homecoming of sorts when he returns to Vienna for the March 1 friendly between Canada and Austria.

Jazic, who turned 30 years old on Sunday, played three seasons with Rapid Vienna before departing for Russia in 2004.

And with former Rapid boss Josef Hickersberger in charge of the Austrians, there is no wonder that Rapid is also the most represented club, sending five players to the Austrian squad. Former Rapid goalkeeper Jürgen Macho, now at FC Kaiserslautern in Germany, had also been included in the Austrian team but had to withdraw due to a badly broken left arm sustained in Kaiserslautern’s 2-0 win over Mainz on the weekend.

First Ever Meeting

The March 1st friendly between Canada and Austria will mark the first ever meeting between the two countries' senior teams.

Last Time Out - Canada-USA Ends in a Stalemate

Canada’s Men’s National team drew with their border rivals USA on January 22, 2006 at Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Canadians will probably rue several missed chances that would have given the Canucks a long awaited victory over the World Cup bound Americans. In fact to many, that would have been a victory that Canada would have fully deserved.

“All in all, a very good result,” said Canadian Head Coach Frank Yallop.

“We probably should have scored, but whether that would have been enough to win is difficult to say. We played against a very talented team tonight in their country and performed extremely well – a win would have been nice but I am proud of the way we played.

“Its performances like this that indicate to me we are heading in the right direction.”

An injured thumb!? Isn't this the man they call "Diesel"? Certainly not VIN Diesel, who kicks bad guys asses and fires rocket launchers with pin point accuracy while spitting biting one liners. Is Stalteri Radzinskiing out of Canada duties while Radzinski is Stalteriing in?

Last time I checked throw-ins with one-hand weren't allowed in soccer.

It might sound a bit lame, but tts a major EPL club, guys, and judging from past experience with how these kind of clubs have dealt with other Concacaf players like Dwight Yorke, they don't release them for meaningless international friendlies if they have so much as an injured nostril hair to use an excuse.

Okie, dookie.

Don't know if this relates to Stalteri or no, but last summer I broke a bone in my hand and was in a fiberglass half-cast for a month. No biggy, could take it off for a shower or whatever but even my beer-league wouldn't let me play with it on.

That being said, this is becoming a bit too much. If it keeps up a melodramatic narritive may be in the offering.

Road Warriors

By Paul Romanuk, Sportsnet.ca

The Canadian men's soccer team will play its seventh straight game on the road in Vienna Wednesday.

VIENNA, Austria -- Apparently, there's no place like home. But it's not as though Canada's Men's World Cup soccer team would know that.

"We play away from home all the time, all the time," Canadian head coach Frank Yallop said. "Tell me another country that does that. It makes it tough sometimes."

The Canadian team is in Vienna preparing for an international friendly against the Austrians on Wednesday night at Ernst Heppel Stadium. The match will be the seventh away game in a row for the National Team - they're last game in front of a Canadian crowd was back in July against Honduras in Burnaby, BC.

The squad worked out Tuesday morning under sunny skies, albeit very cool conditions. Game time temperature on Wednesday night is expected to be around - 4 C. Yallop has recalled several players from last month's 0-0 draw against the US World Cup squad and he likes the way the Canadian team is starting to adopt a consistent plan of attack.

"Guys are starting to know our system, they're getting better at knowing how we do things. As a coach, I like to have our guys play our game and make the other team react to us," Yallop said.

The team Yallop has put together for the game against Austria (ranked 71st in the world, Canada is ranked 84th) is bolstered by the presense of England-based veterans Jim Brennan (Southhampton) and Tomasz Radzinski (Fulham). Paul Stalteri (Tottenham) was supposed to play as well, but had to withdraw because of a thumb injury. Major League Soccer players Dwayne De Rosario (Houston) and Will Johnson (Chicago) have also taken time out from pre-season games to play for Canada.

The Austrians have had to juggle their lineup for the game because of injuries to four players. However, Canada will still face a team that is, in general, a little quicker and more familiar with one another than the Canadians.

"I've seen them play a couple of games, against England and Nigeria, and they're a hard-working and organized bunch."

Austria did not qualify for this year's World Cup in Germany.

Notes: This will be the first ever meeting between the Canadian and Austrian senior teams… This game will mark the final major international match for Canada under the Presidency of Andy Sharpe, who has served two terms as President of Soccer Canada. His present term is up in a few months and he will not run for the position again…...

The Online Gambling Sportsbooks have us as huge underdogs in this game.. Never thought I would see odds like this.. They have Canada as +550 to win this game,, for those not familiar with how the odds work that means if you bet 100 dollars on Canada to win this match, you would get back $650 dollars if they win ($100 x 5.5 = $550 profit) + (the original $100 dollar bet) = $650.. Basically they are giving us 5 to 1 odds here,,

Online betting is mostly about who bets and where, so if you think noone will support a longshot you increase their odds to make it juicier for betters and that way make more business. Still, those odds are tremendously high, suggesting that a huge block of Austrian betters always go for their team regardless of the business side of it.

I recall that Tranmere always rated high on betting sites for promotion, which basically told you something about the folks out in Wirral.

Jeffrey, I've used this online sportsbook (not for betting soccer though) for the last 4 years and its one of the better ones around, its based in England, so your right, thats probably one of the reasons why they've pumped up the odds so high on Canada.. As I'm pretty sure Canada soccer gets very little respect over there when facing other Euro teams..You said it correctly, they like to try and even out the dollars on each side so the more money they get on Austria, the more juicier odds they'll give you on Canada.. Had I used one of the Canadian based online sportsbooks,, I'm sure the Canada odds would be quite a bit lower.. They give the Ivory Coast a better chance at winning in Spain then they do us beating Austria.. This one should be a pretty close game, no way we should be 5.5 to 1 underdogs..

Kleine Zeitung has projected starting lineups. The Austrian starters have been reported a few places and the Canada lineup makes enough sense that I'll buy it:

Austria:

--------------------------------------Payer

--------Dober-----------Scharner---------Hiden--------Pogatetz

-----------------------Kiesenebner----Aufhauser

------------Standfest--------------------------Ivanschitz

----------------------Akagündüz----------Linz

Canada:

-------------------Sutton

Pozniak-----McKenna-----Hutchinson----Klukowski or Jazic

----------Serioux---Bernier----Brennan

------------Radzinski----DeRosario

-------------------Gerba

If that’s how it goes down, I’m surprised by Gerba, but not really by any other choice. Hutchinson is a small surprise, but we have a lot of mids and with Stalteri pulling out are a little thin at the back. I was envisioning Pozniak-McKenna-Reda-Jazic, so I’ll take this. I hope Friend gets a half at least.

cheers,

matthew

Well since Serioux has been training in Austria, I had my doubts about how serious his injury was. Bernier can play in the middle. I don't think the exact positioning in our three man mf is exactly critical. I wouldn't mind seeing Grande start. This could be bs, but it looked reasonable enough that I'd post it. The one before Luxembourg was bang on, so I figured why not.

A different paper had this. I hope the ones who can understand it will find some humour in it:

I'm assuming Earl was misquoted. :)

Herauf die Ahornblätter!

cheers,

matthew
