Hey, it could be worse!

I was at a Hungarian first division match this past Saturday (MTK 4th v Vasas 14th) and boy, it was worse than a USL D1 game!

And the atmosphere: had it not been for the visiting fans, it'd be a dozen 16-y/o ultras and old men eating pumpkin seeds chanting "EmTayKah".

Sad, sad stuff. MTK won 3-0.

Tickets were 1,500 FT (6 euros). I had some pumpkin seeds (0.40 euros) and they were not salted and tasted like crap. I don't think there was a club shop and the concessions ressembled what the Lynx have, only worse.

Attendance was probably around 1,500-2,000, if that.

That is quite cheap. I paid 9 Euros to go to a fifth tier game this weekend, my neighbourhood team Poble Sec winning over a direct rival to stay in a promotion spot to go directly into Spanish 3rd division (4th tier).

Mind you, I read in the paper the next day that they had free cava -Catalan-style champagne- and Xmas cakes for paying fans, though noone told me about it. I think I am going to complain by telling them that in Hungary it is half the price and they have pumpkin seeds at least.

Football in Hungary is not well supported, biggest fan base is Ujpest at the moment. Who won the Autumn season at the weekend. Ferencvaros can get a decent crowd (when I say decent, I mean 6,000) but are poor this season. Debrecen are quite well supported but too far from Budapest to travel to. MTK are not a big draw , probably the 4th team in Budapest but have had some success in the last few seasons with the downfall of Honved and this year ferencvaros.

You are right about the quality of football, any player that is anyway decent (and there are not too many of them) are playing elsewhere in Europe which leaves a poor quality overall. A lot is to be said in getting the 'grass roots' right.

Atmosphere can be decent if one of the big teams is involved, if not you can forget about it.

As for the seeds, everyone eats them here. For big games they have roasted pigs on spits waiting to be carved for you.

But what do you expect from a country that pronounces its letter A as O and S as shh!
