New TIL-goallie from Canada

TIL has today come to an oral agreement with Kenny who tonight play for Canada against Luxembourg. Patrice and Stephen will also join him.

- A keeper with good range and great basis xxx. We have studied him on video, and are pretty safe with his qualities, says TIL keeper trainer Kjetil Tidemandsen to #171;Tromsø#187;.

The Canadian, which also has a greek passport, was last season on loan to Bodens BK from Enkoping. In Bodens he was a teammate of former TIL-player Espen Minde.

Minde confirms that TIL has a new good keeper in the team. He states that Kenny may challenge injured Knut Borch.

- A very good keeper. He will with out doubt challenge Knut, says Minde.

Bodens was relegated from the swedish Superettan (2nd level)

- But he is very good. Tall, swift and good with his feets, Minde adds.

Hirschfeld erstattet

----

Hirschfeld replaced

(VG) Tromsø IL has already the replacement ready after german-canadian Lars Hirschfeld (27) left Alfheim to join Rosenborg and Lerkendal yesterday.

TIL-management confirms to VG that Hirschfelds rival as Canadas national keeper, Kenny Stamtopoulos (26), has oraly agreed on a 3-year contract with the club. Only the medical test is left, before everything is set.

Stamatoploulos (190 cm/82 kg) arrives from the swedish club Enkoping, and has been out on loan this season to Bodens BK. He also has a greek passport, and thus is not hampered by the restrictions on norwegian clubs to only utilize two players in the field (or on the bench in total) from countries outside the EU-zone.

Født i 1979

Tore Rismo, sportslig administrativ leder:

- En meget god løsning. Er tross alt A-landslagskeeper for Canada.

Offensiv, god fot, god i feltet. Et spennende emne.

Espen Minde,lagkamerat i Bodens BK:

Hirschfeld out - Stamatopoulus in

It wasn't many hours after Lars Hirschfeld said no to TIL before the replacement was ready.

Kenny Stamatopoulos is the name of TIL's new keeper. Tonight he guards the Canadian goal in the friendly against Luxembourg. He is competing with Pat Onstad (my note: hasn't he retired) and Lars Hirschfeld for the first spot on Canadas national team. The two last matches Stamatoploulos has been the first choiche. (my note: I belive that is because Lars has said no, against Spain because he wanted to consentrate on his club play and against Luxembourg because of an injury)

Next season he will compete with Knut Borch for the first spot in Tromsø.

He has played the last years in Enkoping and Bodens in Sweden.

He has double nationality - greek and canadian

Born in 1979

190 cm, 83 kg

He is cheap - both the investement and on the pay roll.

He has written a 3-year agreement with TIL - though he must pass the medical test.

Comments from the management and players on the new guy:

Tore Rismo, adm. leader of "sports":

- A very good solution. He is a national keeper for Canada. We have many positive references, and have done thourough research. We here get a good keeper which doesn't cost us much. This gives us a good and safe depth cover for the keeper position next season. (TIL now have three keepers). He has potential to develop.

Kjetil Tidemandsen, keeper trainer:

- Have studied him on video, among others in the away match against Spain recently. Offensive, good foot, good field work. Exciting stuff.

Espen Minde, team-mate in Bodens:

- A great keeper. Nice guy, good mood, and very difficult to score goals on.

Patrice Bernier, team-mate on the national team.

- He has been schooled well in Canada, without a doubt ready for the Tippeliga.

This looks good - and a wittily Tore Rismo ends with a greeting to his "friend", Rosenborg coach Per Mathias Høgmo:

- The cooperation with Rosenborg looks to work splendid, Rosenborg gets Canadas second choice from us, while we pick up Canadas first choice...

I don't see how they think Lars is #2 to Kenny, what has Kenny ever shown for Canada except for exhibition games

Well why they shouldn't think Lars is #2 to Kenny, its not like Kenny's had ever an opportunity to show what he can do in meaningful matches.

Kenny is not that bad kicking: the important thing is not length of long goal kicks, it is how he sends the ball to his defenders, accurately and with confidence. So that with the same confidence they could send it back.

The weakness I perceive is in fact with his hands, he is not entirely confident holding the ball, either coming across high or shot down low.

Lars is more a modern keeper with sharp reactions and generally good positioning. I am not sure he is a real dominant player in the air, but perhaps I have not seen enough recently.

I don't think either is a really top notch keeper, mind you. But I would sure like to see Lars evolve positively at Rosenborg under the pressure to win next season.

I wonder if they mean that he is good saving with his feet?

I hope that the management is joking, and don't believe that Kenny was the first choice if Lars didn't turn down the offer.

The advantage of Kenny is that he has been playing first team football, these years while Lars was riding pine.

Kenny is not very accurate with his kicking. He kicked it into touch in both of the last two games. He often kicks it into an area where no Canadian players are and seems very shaky when the ball is passed back and he is under pressure. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality of his play against Spain (hard to judge against Lux) but kicking is not his strength.

Forrest wasn't good with his feet (but he started with the old rule so that can be an excuse but as a pro should've improve but it's tough when you,re 6'6)

Onstad wasn't either (same as Forrest)

Hirsh isn't

Kenny isn't

Sutton is average but can be suspect at times.

So we never had a GK who I feel would be safe with his feet, every time I see a back pass to our keeper I feel unsafe.....

I am surprised by how keepers train sometimes, given the new culture of keepers needing good feet. D. Fernandes used to train regularly with the first team at Celta Vigo and the keepers, including Cavallero the Argentine international, always did the standard drills, often were sent out to play scrimmages. Thunder used to actually be sent into the striker position and would actually score in scrimmage at Celta.

When he was back at Vancouver playing in the local leagues two years ago he actually played as a non-keeper upon occasion, and I understand that he actually scored.

Now he complains that at Paok they do none of this footwork training, and he trains futsal in his own free time to improve his ball handling. The comment came on the wake of that huge blunder he made a few weeks ago on a backpass that he miss-kicked.

Someone who does excellent tricks with his feet (and the rest of the body) and is quite spectacular with his ball handling is Josh Wicks, the Whitecaps keeper. Perhaps this was not seen by fans but since he trained my son last summer I got to see he was actually quite hot with the ball, and always trying new things.

Wasn't Kenny the back up for Gold Cup 2002?

Yeah he was the backup but Lars was #1 and won goalie of the tournament..Lars' history with Canada is very good and he was bumped out of #1 due to the fact that he didnt have a regular starting job in Europe(backup to Kasey Keller in Tottenham for a long while), I do not feel there is any justification to kenny being labelled #1 over Lars, while he is a great goalie I don't think he has at anytime proven himself to be a #1 international goalie

Lars was told to play some first team soccer, because his quality was slipping while he rode the pine at Spurs. If the same scenerio unfolds at RBK, he will be in the exact same situation.

Frankly, I don't think any of our goalies have proven themselves to be the dominant goalie for Canada. I expect the position will continue to be rotated depending on who is playing and available.

Sutton, Lars, and Kenny have all proven to be competant, but none have a lock on the starting job for Canada. If Fernandes continues his progress at PAOK, we will very shortly have 4 goalies pushing for Canada's starting keeper.

Rosenbord are in the CL this year but won't be next year since they finished in the bottom of the league. No chance to see him in the CL in 2006-2007 but maybe in 2007-2008 if Rosenborg improve their results.

Our best chance to see a CL GK next year is Daniel Fernandes.

On the other hand, Rosenborg need just one more point in group play to get a Uefa Cup berth for next year.
