Tommy playing waiting game

Derby County are still waiting on the fitness of Tommy Smith ahead of Friday's Championship clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Pride Park, writes Steve Nicholson.

Smith has missed the last three games with a hamstring problem and felt a little stiffness in his leg during yesterday's 3-0 victory over Liverpool in a private friendly at Moor Farm.

He was taken off two minutes before half-time as a precaution and manager Phil Brown says the next two days will be critical.

"We are not out of the woods yet with Tommy and we'll be keeping our fingers crossed," Brown added.

"Hopefully there will be no further reaction and he can train with the first team tomorrow with a view to being available for Wolves."

Paul Boertien played for an hour against Liverpool as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.

"Paul now has 45 minutes under his belt against Mansfield and another 60 against Liverpool but we still have to be careful because he has been out for nine months," said Brown.

Canadian centre-back Andre Hainault played another full game and appears to be making a good impression.

The 19-year-old is not under contract to a club but is an amateur player with Montreal Impact. He will stay with the Rams until Christmas.

Academy striker Karl Ashton put a strong Derby team one up against a young Liverpool side. Johnnie Jackson and Paul Thirlwell added further goals before the break.

Derby's line-up was: Poole; R Jackson, Davies (Addison), Hainault, Boertien (Meredith); Smith (Booth), Thirlwell, Bolder, J Jackson; Ashton (Holdsworth), Peschisolido.
