Guest Ed
Whether this has any long term implications for soccer remains to be seen, but the owner of the Stampeders was quoted in the Calgary Herald that tomorrow's playoff game will be the last game to be played on the carpet. Exact vendor of 'field turf' style surface has yet to be named but the owner said they would likely save in the $100,000's per season on reduction in injuries. Correct me if I'm wrong but that carpet isn't very old is it. I seem to recall many of us being very disappointed when they went with the old astroturf style carpet with the reasoning that it could better handle having snow shovelled off of it. Older apparently than some of the posters we've seen lately. I think it was installed in 2000 at the earliest, maybe 2001.
Gian-Luca
Just wonder if Calgary can now become a WYC venue if Saputo carries out on this threat to build his stadium to a smaller capacity. Have the nats of either gender ever played in Calgary? If not, we're somewhat overdue...

Franky
thought crossed my mind too. Calgary must be up for some sort of national game in the near future and i'm sure they would draw well, pro-canadiana style.

The women's U19 club played a friendly against Brazil at Foothills prior to the W19 Championships in Edmonton in 2002. The only time I remember the men playing here was prior to the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Edmonton in 1996. The U23's played the U.S. at Mewata. The big question that I see regarding the new turf is whether they will have the pre-painted in football lines. I know they did that for the current turf and apparently the grounds crew love it. It saves them time and money, and the pre-painted lines always look good. Jason

Daniel
As for Saputo Stadium, there's no way it'll be less than Victoria or Vancouver's venues, so I'm pretty sure it's a moot point.

Calgary Oranje
quote:Originally posted by Franky does anyone know, why Mewata was knocked down??? They knocked it down to build Millennium Park, a kitschy concrete jungle where the main attractions are a skateboard park and an ugly obelisk with a digital clock on top. Franky
Isshhhhhhhhhhh!!!![:0] CNE stadium (which would have been nicely converted to a major venue for soccer, which i advocated since the departure of the Jays/Argos but the CSA had no vision, whatsoever, but to purchase a former home of a P.M., wooooooo) was knocked down for a much-needed parking lot[xx(]

If pro soccer would've come to Calgary a few years sooner, there might have been a chance to save Mewata. The stadium was woefully underused and in disrepair. The main usage of the field was for recreational touch football. I don't even think much soccer was played there. It's too bad the soccer community couldn't have come together and protected it like the baseball folks have for their park. I remember someone mentioned that the skateboard park was part of a larger deal a group had with the city government. Supposedly it is a model facility for that sort of thing so from a non-soccer perspective it wasn't a bad move. But from our perspective, it's horrible. I could've walked to games located there.
