Canadian Dwayne De Rosario honoured for goal of the year in MLS

FRISCO, Texas (CP) - Canadian Dwayne De Rosario has won top goal honours for the second year in a row in Major League Soccer.

The attacking midfielder for the San Jose Earthquakes won for his spectacular curling free kick against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Oct. 15, the final weekend of the regular season.

The Toronto native scored from 25 yards out at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., bending the ball around a wall of the Galaxy players and past Los Angeles goalkeeper Kevin Hartman into the top right corner of the net.

De Rosario, a finalist for the MLS MVP award to be announced Thursday, collected 36.5 per cent of the more than 45,000 final-round votes cast by fans to beat out four finalists: Carlos Ruiz, Clint Dempsey, Jason Kreis and Freddy Adu.

De Rosario is only the second player in the history of Major League Soccer to win the award twice (D.C. United's Marco Etcheverry did it in 1997 and 1999) and the only player to win the award in back-to-back seasons.

De Rosario helped lead San Jose to the league's best record during the regular season with nine goals and a league-leading 13 assists.

He is up against New England Revolution striker Taylor Twellman and D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno for the league MVP.

The goal of the year award is sponsored by Sierra Mist.
