Daniel
We're not talking about the most well known or the one playing at the highest level. At club level, what Canadians are among the most popular players on the team, the most devoted. Who sells the most shirts with their name on the back? For the sake of this thread, we'll forget domestic players. I'd probably say Bircham is in there, seeing as he's known to be QPR through and through. Maybe Dero (although I don't know if MLS has personalised shirts) as he's leading candidate for MVP, won the 2002 MLS Cup in OT, has been with the Quakes for a few years, etc. Who else is put up there by the fans? What's the word on our guys in Scandinavia? I know Otto hasn't quite had the impact during his second year. Tiba?

Not sure I'd agree with that, certainly he was seen as on of their best up and comers, though if you talk to many Tranmere fans they feel he didn't live up to his potential. Well I spent considerable time lurking the tranmere board at roversrearguard and Hume was easily the most popular.
mjoni
Atiba was voted player of the year in Helsingborg for 2005, and is known for consistently holding high class and playing with heart.

Daniel
Oops about Bircham's tatoo. Stalteri was appreciated, but I don't think he was nearly among the favourites at Bremen.

Guest Stian Stryni
Patrice Bernier is very much liked in Tromso, but he doesn't hide that he wants to play on a higher level. He works hard, has one of the larges running capacities in the norwegian tippeligaen and plays 90 minutes almost every mach. Lars Hirschfeld is allready a hero in Tromso even though he has only been her since august! As of now he is one of the most appreciated players on the team. Guest Ed
In terms of jersey sales, no one can touch Hargreaves (who, BTW, is just a wee bit more Canuck than Marc Bircham).
James
Thats a tough one. I'll have to go with Atiba though. I know Bircham is always a fan fave and of course Jason Devos is a big draw wherever he goes. Pesch seems to be a fan favourite wherever he plays too. The style that Hume plays, similarily, makes a nice impression with the fans too. McKenna might top them all at Energie Cottbus if he keeps filling the net though. The whore doesn't make the list for the most obvious reason but also because he isn't even in the top 5 or 10 favourite players at Bayern Munich. He certainly isn't in the the top 10 favourite players for England(would he even be in the top 50?)Maybe Ed, your just trying to stir the pot, eh? He might not be a favourite in either Munich or England but you are talking about one of the clubs with the most fans in Europe and one of the maybe top three national teams, in terms of merchandise sold, in the world. So if say 1% of Bayern kits have Owen's name on it its still alot more than all the kits sold of some small norwegian club. Same for england. I bet more england kits get sold with Hargeaves on the back then all personaized Canadain shirts combined. I personally have three England shirts with Hargeaves on the back (One is very nice since I also had a Mapple Leaf stitched on each cuff) and four of my friends have at least one shirt with his name on the back. But then again I'm not anti-hargeaves. Thats the difference though, if you don't like him you call him a 'whore' and if you like him you buy his shirt. I don't want to start a flame war, but some Canadains do like Hargreaves, and those people buy his shirts. And while he is not a Canadain national he is a Canadain, so maybe he should be in the running as a sidenote.
Cheeta
Seriously? Wow. The only Canada kit I've seen on the street (as it were) with someone besides "Hooper" on the back was this one fellow in the old whites with Bircham on it. Shocked the Hell out of me. Hard to say being so far removed but I'm going to bet Marc's by far and away the most in with his club sides support. I'll bet DDR is up there too. Agree on that. Hume and Diesel I think were both very popular with their old clubs but that was then and we seem to be talking now. Give McKenna a few more hat tricks this season and see what happens. Well here in Calgary I've never seen a Cdn player's jersey (club or country) with any other name than Hargreaves. Other than myself, of course, who has worn a 'de Guzman' or two in public. matthew
The only personalized club jersey I've seen for a Canadian is a DeRo Quakes jersey and I've seen two of them. I don't think DeVos is terribly popular with Ipswich fans. They tend to moan about the backline more than anything else. Pesch seems to be reasonably popular at Derby too, though maybe not there long enough to be massively popular. cheers, matthew

You are letting your feelings get in the way. Many companies feature Owen H. in their ad campaigns in Germany and world wide. He has fans throughout Bavaria and is used for various publicity campaigns by the club. He is by far one of the more popular Bayern players. If stating facts is stirring the pot so be it. Now, without any doubt, I would say Jonathan de Guzman is the next in terms of popularity, but I guess he's not in England or featured on the national team, he doesn't register with this site. Free kick
quote:Originally posted by Ed Now, without any doubt, I would say Jonathan de Guzman is the next in terms of popularity, but I guess he's not in England or featured on the national team, he doesn't register with this site. But he is still a very young player. Yes there is great promise but none of us really know how good he will be and none of us have seen him play. We have spent years here tracking progress of U18 and U20 players but its really a roll of the dice. Of al those players over the years, one or two have progressed to first team duties on a top teir side, others caught on with div II or three, others have dissappeared from sight and still others have gone on to play for other national sides. For example, remember Terry Dunfield? I am not saying that there is no value to following his progress or that of any other player his age but anything could happen as far as his carreer. Before I buy a canada jersey with his name on it or beginning booking my tickets for South africa 2010, I would rather wait and see that his name pops ups in more mainstream soccer media sources. Poll any soccer fan outside of those found on this site and see how many have even heard of him? When i start seeing his name crop up in more independant and objective sources, then I will agree with you. That doesn't mean that what he has acomplished isn't very impressive, but he is still a youth player. Let him be kid rather than a saviour.
