Canadian Pat Onstad named goalie of the year in Major league Soccer

NEW YORK (CP) - Canadian Pat Onstad has been named goalkeeper of the year in Major League Soccer, the second time in three years he has won the award.

MLS also announced Wednesday that Toronto's Dwayne DeRosario, a San Jose Earthquakes teammate, is a finalist for MVP honours. In addition to being one of only five players to start and play in every minute of all 32 MLS regular season games (2,880 minutes), the 37-year-old Onstad led the league in wins (18), shutouts (12), goals-against average (0.97), and save percentage (77.2 per cent).

San Jose surrendered a league-low 31 goals during the season.

The former Canadian international edged Matt Reis of the New England Revolution while defending goalie of the year Joe Cannon of the Colorado Rapids finished third.

Canadian national team coach Frank Yallop brought both Onstad and DeRosario to San Jose when he was coach of the Quakes.

"Pat's always a guy you can rely on." Yallop said Wednesday. "I said this when I signed him. What you want to do is sort of forget a position. You know you can put Pat in goal and he's going to do very well for you. And you almost forget about him, he's going to be that good.

"Over a season, he's very much the most consistent goalkeeper in the league."

DeRosario is up against Bolivian forward Jaime Moreno of D.C. United and U.S. national team striker Taylor Twellman of New England.

The Canadian has nine goals and 13 assists in 28 games this season, scoring twice in Saturday's 3-1 win over Los Angeles.

The Toronto forward has a knack for scoring highlight-reel strikes. He turned heads with a beautiful free kick against the Galaxy on the weekend and won MLS goal of the year honours in 2004.

"He's really matured over the last 18 months, with Canada and with San Jose," said Yallop. "I think he's playing the best I've ever seen him play, and the most consistent he's ever played.

"That consistency now is allowing him to really flourish and do his thing. He looks a fantastic player right now."

Also Wednesday, San Jose's Ronald Cerritos won the 2005 Kraft Global Fair Play Awards. The Kansas City Wizards were the winners of the Kraft Global Team Fair Play award, recognizing the team with the fewest disciplinary points during the course of the regular season.

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol is up for coach of the year, putting him in position to win the honour for a second time in four seasons.

Nicol is in his fourth season with New England and led the Revolution to the second-best record in MLS this season, behind only San Jose. He won the award in 2002, when the Revolution went to the MLS Cup title game but lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0.

Dominic Kinnear, in his second season with the Earthquakes, and former Polish international Peter Nowak of defending champion D.C. United also were announced as finalists.

Besides Kinnear, San Jose had six among the finalists for the various season-ending awards. New England, D.C. United and Kansas City were next with three each.

Award announcements run through Nov. 12, with the MVP set for Nov. 10.

Finalists in other categories:

Defender: Danny Califf, San Jose; Jimmy Conrad, Kansas City; Tyrone Marshall, Los Angeles.

Rookie: Michael Parkhurst, New England; Chris Rolfe, Chicago; Scott Sealy, Kansas City.

Comeback player: Ronald Cerritos, San Jose; Herculez Gomez, Los Angeles; Chris Klein, Kansas City.

Notes: Canada's under-18 team defeated the Huddersfield United under-18 side 3-1 Wednesday in the first game of coach Dale Mitchell's English camp.

Toronto's Shane Lammie scored twice while Montreal's Cristian Nunez had the other goal for the young Canadians.

"We had an enormously successful beginning to the UK camp today with the victory," Mitchell said in a statement. "The boys competed well and at times played some very good stuff. We are aware of the opponents to come however and will have to improve in a few areas to get something out of those matches."

Canada will play the Bambridge Reserves on Saturday before taking on under-18 teams from Liverpool (Oct. 25), Manchester United (Oct. 27) and Everton (Oct. 29).

Mitchell's squad is working towards the 2007 World Youth Championships, an under-20 tournament that Canada is hosting.

Craig Forrest just suggested that if Onstad continues to play he might have a shot at another WCQ campaign......

Well I hope Tortonto does get that MLS franchise then so that Craig can watch it sometimes.

Interesting thread on bigsoccer about the MLS GK of the year, it seems like the MLS fans have a totally different opinion about Onstad than the Voyageurs.

At the club level Onstad is still our best keeper, he's doing very well with SJ. It's sad that no one here will take some time to congratulate him for that award but they'll take some time to take a shot at him for the CR mistake...

Yeah right loyola. Note that the players voted Matt Reis over Pat Onstad by a wide margin, the coaches narrowly chose Onstad and the media voted for Onstad by a wide margin. Make of that what you will.

He's still the best keeper we have, geez this site annoys me sometimes with irrational thoughts, and their Onstad bashing/Lars loving.

You know you could say Tam Nsaliwa is a bench warmer for a last place Bundesliga 2 team. Make of that what you will.

I'll congratulate Pat. He's been a great club performer and always seemed to be put on the spot for Canada (ie travelling around the world for a next day game).

He finally gets to be number one and has a couple of bad games in WCQ. He also had two spectacular games which are documented at Net54. His team didn't exactly help him out a whole lot in WCQ. I rewatched the Costa Rica game where he gave up the rebound and everybody said the team fell apart. The team didn't fall apart until 20 minutes after the goal was scored so I doubt if that was the whole problem.

Poor officiating and goofy back passes didn't help his cause either.

Two time goalie of the year (in three years) in MLS can't be denied. Disputing that is sour grapes.

Pat Onstad benefits from playing behind the best defense in the MLS. As he did in 2003.

I was responding to the statement that he could lead us one more time in WCQ. No thanks. I don't believe he is our best option.

We have never won a game that mattered in WCQ with him in the net. And I have never brought up that CR game because we were well and truly out of it by that time.

I would take the bench warmer for the last place team in the Bundesliga 2 in a heart beat over some of the choices Yallop has had for our back line.

If the players are right that only means that Onstad is the second best keeper in the MLS......make of that what you will. Honestly I would have more trust for the coaches opinion over the players and the media.

Can you name the boss of that defense......yes it's Pat Onstad!!!

I think, to be fair, you should say that Onstad is "part" of the best defense in the MLS. We should also note that they don't have any USMNT player on that defense.

Fine, look at his positioning in CR, etc.

I've NEVER seen Onstad steal a point for us, period. We need a keeper who can do that. He also lets in some howlers which aren't important over 30 games with playoffs (look at the OG in his first year) but WCQ is a whole different story.

Who said anything about wanting him back with the Nats? I'll be the first to admit Pat struggled at times wearing the Leaf as opposed to his good club career. I think there were some legitimate excuses why but some other times he just didn't get the job done. But let's call a spade a spade. At that time Lars was a bench warmer and Pat was playing regularly and the best option.

What was bugging me was people not giving him kudos for his MLS triumphs.

As per Lars he has now earned his way back into the picture although in a couple of weeks it looks like he'll be unemployed again (hopefully not for long). He was only getting a game here and there after his imitation of a human pinball flipper at the Gold Cup. For some here he was living off that rep as was Tam for covering Beasley. Lars has again proven himself by becoming a regular for Tromso. He has paid his dues as has Pat and Greg and Kenny by getting games.

Things are different now that there are four (if you count Fernandes) guys on the scene.

Wade Barrett!! I know it's just a technicality, but Heyduk and Pope are really the only Nats that consistently play on the national team and are still in MLS.

... Craig Forrest mentioned something about it.

I think Craig Forrest was just getting caught up in the moment saying that Pat was a good friend of his and is having a terrific season with San Jose. Face it, Onstad is 37. By the next WC qualifying campaign, he will be 40. Assuming we qualify, he will be 42 in 2010. I think there is very little chance he will be back with the Nats. Maybe for one game here or there but I doubt even that will happen as Yallop has said he wants to use all the friendlies to try out his young players.

In any case, congratulations to Pat for a terrific MLS season and being named GK of the year

I really think we need a new goalie. I do give credit to Pat but I personally do not like his style of play. Hes big and intimidating but not as fast as I like to see. Bartez is a great goalie whom is your average monster in the net but his quick reflex's and timed touch backs from the defensive lines are what we need. I prefer to see a goalie play outside the posts.
