Jeremy Loome
ISTANBUL (CP-AP) — Patrice Bernier scored the decisive goal and fellow Canadian Lars Hirschfeld starred in goal Thursday as Norway’s Tromso knocked Turkish heavyweight Galatasaray out of the UEFA Cup. Tromso, which featured a third Canadian in Stephen Ademolu of Windsor, Ont., tied the Turks 1-1 Thursday to complete a 2-1 aggregate first-round win over the former champion. Bernier’s first-half strike from the edge of the penalty box provided to be the decider as Hakan Sukur scored for the home side in the second half. Bernier, a Montreal native, has played 13 times for Canada. Hirschfeld, an Edmonton native with 18 caps for Canada, made several good saves, stopping shots from Necati Ates and Mit Karan. Galatasaray, which beat Arsenal for the 2000 title, pressed in the second half but Tromso held on.
