Nineteen fans show up for first-division match in Costa Rica

posted September 27 @ 16:35, EST

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) - For a change, there were more players than spectators at a first-division soccer game in Costa Rica.

Only 19 people attended Sunday's match when Santos played at Carmelita's 2,200-seat stadium in Alajuela, about 20 kilometres northwest of the capital, the newspaper Extra reported on Tuesday.

Costa Rica has qualified for the World Cup twice, including the 2002 championship, and is in a commanding position to assure itself of a place at next year's tournament in Germany.

Extra reported that 15 of the fans had come to support Santos, which won 2-1. The gate receipts of $78 US weren't even enough to pay security guards for the game.

"As far as I can recall, the least we'd had were 25 people in previous seasons," Carmelita club president Carlos Gonzalez told the newspaper "We've had bad sales, but never like this."

Carmelita, founded in 1948, finished third in Group A last season, one spot below the last playoff berth. This season, however, it has won only two of eight games and is last in six-team Group B with seven points.

Three teams have worse records: Liberia, Santacrucena and Ramonense.

"We will have to go door-to-door, to the schools and colleges to invite fans because we need the support of the people," Gonzalez said.

Kind of makes the CPSL look better doesn't it;)?

Yeah, who would of thought back in their hay days when they packed the stadium with 25 people that one day they'd only be drawing 19?
