Former Champ
(this is not a match report... just a report from the match:D) The Quebec/Nova Scotia game was a ring-a-ding-dong dandy. I sat with players from Ontario to watch that one and it was fun. Quebec seemed to dominate play, but Nova Scotia looked dangerous everytime they got into the Quebec penalty area. The Novas were giants and made the Quebeckers look small. Quebec lost thier starting goalie to injury in the first half. Nova Scotia went up 1-0 early and also lead 2-1 in the second half. It was 2-2 right up to 90 minutes and it was a really exciting and competitive second half but Quebec seemed to change gears about the 80 minute mark and Nova Soctia didn't have an extra gear it seemed. Quebec got 2 in injury time. 4-2 final. Wot a luverly day of footie that was. Thanks for the ride Cooks! Maybe see ya tomorrow. Where are the Quebec team from? Bill Spiers
Ontario U18 results from Sydney: It's not often that both of the Ontario teams fail to score as much as a single goal between them - but it was still a successful day for Ontario! The Erin Mills Eagles had already qualified for Monday's Gold Medal Game and their 0-0 tie on Saturday morning against Saskatchewan enabled them to remain unbeaten and get through the day with no injury or discipline problems. The rain held off until the second half but then bucketed down! On Saturday evening, on the boys side, Woodbridge faced off under a steady downpour against Select Rive-Sud of Quebec with a place in the final very much on the line. For Woodbridge, a single point would be enough whereas Select Rive-Sud had to win to set up a possible three-way tie for top spot (along with Halifax Dunbrack) depending on Sunday's results. As it turned out, it was another 0-0 tie so Woodbridge move on to Monday's Gold Medal Game. Their opponents are unknown at this time but are likely to be the BC reps. Both teams now have a day off (on Sunday) to prepare for the Finals on Monday. Erin Mills opponents are also unknown - it could be either Alberta, Quebec or Cape Breton! Cooks
Semi-Final #1 Green & Gold 2 - 1 Calgary Dinos G&G's control of the midfield was the deciding factor in this match. Brett Bachelu had both for G&G, while Andrew Zakaluzny replied for the Dinos. Semi-Final #2 Scarborough GS United 3 - 1 Panellinios Scarborough just had more horses on this day. An early injury to Panellinios' most dangerous looking player seemed to take a bite out of their offensive threat. In other matches: (SK) Saskatoon Arsenal 2- 1 Sporting Club (BC) Jordan Schidlowsky and Ryan McAllister scored for Arsenal. Brian Gebbie replied for Sporting. (NS) Halifax Celtic 2 - 1 Eastern Eagles (PEI) Mat Budreski had a pair for Celtic. Bill Keaveny potted one for PEI. (YK) Yukon Selects 3 - 1 Hampton Labatt United (NB) Paul Fraughton, Peter Mather, and Victor Lavenderous tallied for Yukon. No word on who scored for New Brunswick. Bill Spiers
Ontario U-18 results from Sydney: Success for Erin Mills Eagles! Heartbreak for Woodbridge Strikers! In the first of today's Gold Medal Games - the Girls Final - the Erin Mills Eagles faced off against the Alberta champions, the Sherwood Park Rangers. Both teams were strong defensively and there were few good chances at either end. They were tied 0-0 at the end of the first half. The Alberta team put the pressure on in the second half but the Erin Mills defence held firm. With just 10 minutes remaining and overtime looking very possible, Erin Mills pushed forward and forced a free kick outside the penalty area and towards the side-line. ND - who usually comes forward for set pieces and has scored several goals this week with headers - stabbed the ball home with her foot when the Alberta team failed to clear to give Erin Mills a 1-0 lead. With the Erin Mills parents pacing nervously along the sideline, the Erin Mills defence continued to play a strong game and held out until the final whistle blew to claim the Gold Medal and the National Championship! KP played in net and claimed the shut-out. The Boys Final immediately followed and featured the Woodbridge Strikers against Burnaby Royals from BC. Another defensive struggle with few chances at either end and, again, tied at 0-0 at half-time. Woodbridge applied more pressure in the second half but failed to break the well-organised Burnaby defense. With just 15 minutes remaining, Burnaby broke the deadlock to take a 1-0 lead. Woodbridge continued to press and were rewarded with an equaliser in the 83rd. minute as a powerful header from AR found the back of the net. Woodbridge almost took the lead minutes later but a header from CE was inches wide. The game looked certain to go into overtime but deep into injury time, the Burnaby Royals launched another attack and scored to take a 2-1 lead. There was no time for Woodbridge to come back again and they had to be content with a Silver Medal.
