loyola
Men's Junior (U-17) Team Friday, September 23, 2005 Hart and Fleming Announce Rosters for Kiwi Series Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s U17 National Team (players born in 1990) Head Coach, Stephen Hart, and Sean Fleming, Head Coach for the U18 National Development Team (players born in 1987, 88, 89) have both set their respective rosters for the upcoming series against the U15 (1990) and U19 (1986) New Zealand Schoolboy teams in Kelowna, BC. The teams will play two double-headers at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna, BC. The first set of matches will be on September 29th at 7pm and 9pm. The series will conclude on October 1st with matches scheduled for 11am and 1pm. All times listed are local. There will be no charge for admission to the matches but spectators will be asked to make a small ‘contribution’ that will be forwarded to a number of charities in the Kelowna area. Canada’s U20 National Team Head Coach, Dale Mitchell, will be the most interested observer at the U18 matches. Mitchell will be looking to bolster his pool of players for 2007 and will certainly be looking for individuals with the potential to make the jump to his squad. “This is another great opportunity for these players to showcase their talents in the hope of securing a spot on Dale Mitchell’s U20 team,” stated head Coach Sean Fleming. “For some of these players, it will be their first time representing Canada. It will be a good test to see how they react to the pressure of International competition and how they can perform with only a few days preparation. It is a fairly young group of players who will certainly be tested by an older New Zealand side.” Hart on the other hand is beginning to solidify his core group of players that will attempt to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Championships in 2007. The qualifying tournament for the World Championships will likely be in early 2007, but Hart has already assembled his group once in 2005. In early August, Hart assembled his future U17 (1990) team for the Caribbean Youth Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. After cruising through the preliminary round and the quarterfinals, Hart’s youngster’s dispatched of Jamaica 4-2 in the semi-final and two days later were crowned champions after rolling over Guatemala 4-0 in the final. Twelve players on the Caribbean Youth Cup-winning team are returning for the series against New Zealand, meaning of course that six new faces will be out to impress Hart. Goalkeeper Jason Blackley (Saskatchewan), defender Daniel Kijowski (Quebec), midfielders David Piedimonte (Quebec) and Kyle Bekker (Ontario), and strikers Randy Edwini-Bonseu (Alberta) and Teal Bunbury (Minnesota) will all be making their debuts for Canada and will undoubtedly look to secure a place in the squad. One name in particular may jump out to supporters of Canadian soccer. Teal Bunbury, son of former Canadian International Alex Bunbury, will be hoping to carry on his father’s scoring tradition for the Canucks. Alex Bunbury scored 16 goals for Canada (3rd all-time) in 65 international appearances (4th all-time). “The games against New Zealand provide an ideal opportunity to introduce new potential talent to the National Teams Program and once again test ourselves at an International level,” said Head Coach Stephen Hart. The Canadian Soccer Association officially joined the Schoolboys Association Football International Board (SAFIB) in 2002 and together with New Zealand, are the only two non-European nations involved. In addition to the two non-European members, the current SAFIB board is made up of the Schoolboys Associations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as well as the FA’s of Germany, France, Holland, Israel, Finland, Belgium, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Switzerland. loyola
It looks like the USA had Teal Bunbury in their pool of players. http://www.socceramerica.com/article.asp?Art_ID=562135391
Andrew W
Is Alex Bunbury's wife American? Or does the US claim him through residency? It's also good to see two Saskatchewan players on the lists. Good stuff.

matthew
I thought Kevin Murphy had a brilliant Canada Games and if he can play the way he did there at the international level, he'll be a legend. I also didn't realize JD Blakley was 15 . . . Nice to see strong Canada Games performances get rewarded. cheers, matthew
An Observer
Perhaps with Bah they are doing the same as they did with Nsaliwa where they kept him in the program until he could qualify for Canadian citizenship (which probably would not be in time for the 2007 U-20 worlds). kelownaguy
what were the names of the guys on the U17 at the Caribbean Cup a couple months back that were scoring machines?? I can't seem to remember and not crazy about looking for that thread.. Wasn't Chris Sheriffe one of the big scorers.. (don't see him on this list),, I think Mohammed Sylla was another of the better players there,, there were a couple more standouts but don't recognize their names on the list,, can't quite remember their names.. There were a lot of scorers on that team as they were quite dominant. A Trini poster raved about the play of Canada's two main strikers Sylla & Sherriffe, both of whom he described as big, fast and very skilled. I have no idea why Sherriffe is not there .... a trial perhaps, or maybe SH simply wants to look at others like Alex's boy? The other five who were in Trinidad but not going to Kelowna were keeper Kyle Buxton, MFs Phillipe Davis & Antonio Rago, and strikers Hossan Nasser & Shomesh Chauduri. analyst
Two of the players on the older team ( Stefan Leslie and Keegan Ayre) played in VMSL action this past weekend. They played in Columbus's 4-2 loss to Sapperton. Leslie was very impressive, (very fast striker with good dribbling skills) whereas Ayre had a poor game. This is the second year in the VMSL (mens league) for both players. There are 7 other BC players on the team and all 7 other BC players are still playing youth soccer.
