I have to admit that I havn't been following the MLS that closely.I knew he was playing some midfield but had no idea that he was playing that kind of role for the Earthquake.Leading the league in assists is quite amazing for someone who would often get crtizised for holding on to the ball too long and giving it away.Very happy to see but I'm not sure he can play that role with Canada. We have plenty of midfielders. We need more players to develope their goal scoring abilities. However,if we can get someone like De Ro to put our strikers in better goal scoring positions then maybe it's worth a try.

He is certainly scoring too. He scored two goals yesterday and had several other chances. Go to http://www.mlsnet.com/MLS/mls/sights/index.jsp?club=mls

and look at the highlights of the game(choose Fire at Earthquakes for Sept. 21). He seems to be bursting with confidence with San Jose.

He has had great seasons at striker too, but that has never translated into anything positive for the National side.

That's not true. He's scored some timely goals and some very important goals but I would never say he had a "great" season at striker with San Jose and I've followed the team very closely since he joined them several years ago.

Guest Jeffery S.

The stats are not fully updated, and the Reserves play very few games, but it seems that Will Johnson is assist leader in the Reserve League. He has three goals and five assists in 6 or maybe 7 games.

Re De Ro, I guess I hadn't seen him in a while so vs. Spain I thought he was quite good. He did not get lost too much in useless dribbling, in fact his best run he went straight for goal. Perhaps he still needs to learn to make the easy pass, to keep the ball moving, as he is a player who moves fairly well off the ball. He worked defensively, his positioning was fine.

So maybe it would be fun to try him playing in the hole behind two strikers, an offensive mid right in the centre. Too bad Luxembourg is not really a test for anything except motivation vs. a minnow.

Canadian Dwayne De Rosario named MLS player of the week

posted September 26 @ 22:13, EST

SAN JOSE, Calif. (CP) - Canadian Dwayne De Rosario was selected as the Major League Soccer player of the week on Monday.

De Rosario, a midfielder with the San Jose Earthquakes, scored a goal in each half in his club's 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday. He is the only Earthquake to have a multiple-goal game this season. De Rosario followed with a strong performance in Saturday's 1-1 tie with FC Dallas which clinched the Western Conference title for the Earthquakes.

The Toronto native leads the MLS in assists with 12, and is tied for third in the league in game-winning goals with four.

De Rosario is also a fixture on the Canadian international squad with 34 caps

Not to take anything at all away from DeRo's goals in that 2-0 game, but the first was pretty cheeky and the second was from the spot. From watching the highlights his best play was an awesome run down the left flank (not into the corner!) and the bullett cross into the six yard box that came from it. For anybody watching the 9/21 San Jose highlights look for this right around 45 minutes. It's quality. How Ching didn't score from there even he doesn't know.
