loyola
I was watching Man United against Liverpool and I was wondering who was the best GK in the world at the moment? It's a tough question with no good answer since it's tough to evaluate keeper that we don't see often but here's my choice. I have to say that Van der Sar must be the best at the moment, he's so good in all the area of the game. I've watched Man U 3 times this year and saw an Holland game and I don't think I saw him making a mistake, very consistent keeper plus that save on Andy Cole(Man City) was just one of the best I've seen in a long time. Honorable mention: Peter Cech, very good and consistent but doesn't receive a lot of shots with Chelsea. Oliver Khan, haven't seen a lot of him lately but was the best in 2002, the only weakness I saw in his game is that he's punching a lot of crosses that he should catch, also can makes huge mistakes. Buffon is always one of my favorite, nice girlfriend too . Did I miss someone? Would like to know more about the keepers in La Liga since I haven't seen a lot of them...Casillas is good but what about other keepers?
Polish_LYNX_Fan
The young Barca keeper is quality. Right now I think its Cech. Although there is a great talent playing in goal in Glasgow. ( for celtic)
beachesl
Dida, the Brazilian who plays for AC Milan, was just named Goalkeeper of the year by the international pro footballers. This may be because most of the members are either Brazilian or Meditteranean players. Cech would be my choice, and I agree that Van Der Sar is very hot now. http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-award&prov=reuters&type=lgns Ronaldinho was named player of the year and Rooney young player of the year. 2004-05 season's "best team": Team: Dida (Brazil/AC Milan); Cafu (Brazil/AC Milan), Alessandro Nesta (Italy/AC Milan), John Terry (England/Chelsea), Paolo Maldini (Italy/AC Milan); Frank Lampard (England/Chelsea), Claude Makelele (France/Chelsea), Ronaldinho (Brazil/Barcelona) Zinedine Zidane (France/Real Madrid); Samuel Eto'o (Cameroon/Barcelona), Andriy Shevchenko (Ukraine/AC Milan). amacpher
Cech is totally unproven. He COULD be the best 'keeper in the world, but none of us would know it cuz he's not tested. Saying he's the best is like saying a newborn baby will be the next Maradona. Can't disprove it, but certainly there's no case to prove it either. The best I'd say is Casillas. He gets tested alot and I've never seen him look bad.
SeanKeay
Casillas is over rated completly, but thats just me. I think chec has to be credited as one of the best in the world, but i still think good ol Olli Kahn is the best in the world, and i kno ill get some nice comments about him. But hes a great keeper and a great shot stopped and commands the box.
Andrew W
This is so subjective, but based on my own preferences I like Grégory Coupet (Lyon) and Andreas Isaksson (Rennes). However, it's likely because I watch Ligue 1 more than the other leagues. Everyone mentioned so far is quality.
zacRWE
Gomes from PSV really impressed me last year. This year I havent seen him so much so I cant tell if he was a flash in the pan. Other great keepers are of course Dida (best PK goalie), Cech (best GAA) and Buffon (best shot stopper). But others like Robert Enke (Hannover) and Edwin van der Sar (Man U) also have to be aknowledge.
Gian-Luca
Dida's performance in this year's Champions league final might suggest he's no longer the best PK keeper.
piltdownman
Gianluigi Buffon ( juventus, Italy) would be my pick. But as a United Supporter i'm really liking Van Der Sar. I still think Buffon is tops, but I like what Van Der Sar is bringing to the table this year.

I first started liking his play during the Euro 2004 tournament for Sweden. Between TV5 and FSWC last year I saw him about six or seven times last season and Rennes has been on the tube at least twice this season (that I've seen). Every time I see him I'm impressed. Canuck Oranje
In reading through those named, it is clear that the team a goalkeeper plays for has a great influence over a fan's perception of quality. Compare that to Peter Shilton, former England keeper, who played for teams like Leicester City, Stoke City, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Derby County, etc. while being capped 125 times. Personally, I like Dida. I am not saying he is the best PK keeper but when you play goal for Brazil, you do have to make some stops. And if Parreira ever trys to play his 5 offensive superstars at the same time, it be very interesting for Dida. Others, I like are, Robinsin (Tottenham) and Gomes (PSV). Van de Saar is ok but like B & W, I have seen him make mistakes but with Holland.
argh1
Best is too hard for me to pick. Robinson, Cech, Kahn, Buffon, Coupet and there a few I'm missing are definatly the stars of Europe. Van der Sar is a good keeper but I hope he survives Fergusson who doesn't seem to stand by his keepers. He absolutely holds keepers to a higher standard than his out field players and a young keeper probably would be better staying clear of him. Now if you wanna talk defenders, why PSG's Mario Yepes hasn't been chased down by one of the handfull of giant, giant Euro clubs is strange he's gotta be one of the top defenders in Europe. Cheeta
quote:Originally posted by Blue and White Army Van der Sar has many flaws. I watched him quite a bit at Fulham. Can get over aggressive. Kinda needed that at Fulham and it isn't being held up as a red flag at Manchester U. just yet. But at least everyone knows who's in charge back there in the deep third. Best signing in years, YEARS, for Sir Alex. Wasn't a Van der Sar fan until watching him at Fulham. Boy, did I change my opinion. Don't know how you can pick a best. Gotta watch a lot of footie and everything is not always equal that much is for sure. Buffon and Cech come to mind. Like Buffon a lot but Cech dose get a pretty easy go of it 85 minutes a match, game in and game out. Pretty tough question.

zacRWE
Theres also the Goalie from Sao Paulo.. Rogerio Ceni. He not only is a good shot stopper but he is considerd as one of the best FK takers in the game today!!! I totaly forgot about him.. but I have seen him on FSWC a couple of times. He is kinda like Chilavert in the way he takes FK.. it's pretty cool!
Canuck Oranje
Having seen Rogerio Ceni play a few times when I was in Sao Paulo, I think he is good but not at the level of Keepers like Robinson, Cech, Dida, Buffon, etc. He is one of the Character goalkeepers though. SP has a lot of very young players so having an experienced Keeper who can do a lot of things works well for them. He is fun to watch though. quote:Originally posted by zacRWE Theres also the Goalie from Sao Paulo.. Rogerio Ceni.
