NCAA Div. 1 Canadians: 2005 version

Recommended Posts

It's been a long time coming, but here is the 2005 list of Canadians at NCAA institutions that play Div. I soccer. [xx(]

The methodology I used for compiling this list was to research the schools registered for Div. I men's soccer as posted on the NCAA's website NCAA Div. I soccer schools. From that list of schools I visited individual school athletic websites to check the rosters for 2005. Needless to say, it is not a foolproof method for finding all the Canadians playing Div. I soccer. There are likely others that I was unable to unearth using this method, and/or the rosters might have been further updated since I last checked them. In fact, there are three players at St. Francis College (NY) that I'm checking to see if they are Canucks.

Some notes: This year I did not include a Div. II list simply due to the amount of work the research takes, particularly with the smaller schools where the websites are often less reliable than the (ususally) bigger Div. I schools. This is not indicitive that I believe the Div. II players not to be worthy of mention or the level of soccer worth following. It is merely a time issue. Anyone wanting to take last year's list of Div. II players and build on it is more than welcome. There are some great players in that division and some have indeed gone on to bigger and better things. If I feel the urge later this fall, I just may do the list.

Any additions or changes, please post them. I checked spellings of players and cities as best I could, so apologies if the community names are wrong or you buddy's (or relative's) name is misspelled. These are American-based websites we are talking about and the information on Canada can some times be amusing.

Hey! I coached this guy from U8 to U17 - I think he's a great keeper. I wish at the time I knew more about how to expose him to future opportunities...but it looks like he eventually found his way to Div 1 - that's awesome!!

Does anyone have some background info on the Saskatoon lad who is with Fairfield? I can't think of any other Saskatchewan player who have played in the NCAA.

Jason

Kerr Mcleod has played some for Canada's youth teams and has had some looks in Holland. Although I haven't kept track of Saskatchewan players in the NCAA, a HS of teammate of mine - Perry Senko - and HS opponent - Murray Hanson - were All-American's at U of Tulsa in the early 80s and a coule of years ago, a keeper from my old high school (Leboldus) was playing Div III. So I expect there have been a few from the gap to play NCAA.

Kerr spent last year with Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands and by the end of the year was starting with their Under-18 team. They wanted him to stay, but he couldn't get a visa. So he decided to go the NCAA route.

I think Kerr's solidly in the running for the 07 U20s. He's left footed and is pretty versatile in the midfield.

I know a few guys from my era went down to the US, I think Div II, but I don't remember any details. I'm surprised a guy like McLeod ended up at a small school like Fairfield, but maybe it was the right fit for him.

cheers,

matthew

Alim Karim, our former u-20 keeper at Syracuse, has not played so far this year. Don't know if he lost his starting spot, just odd since he is a senior there. Also since he did well in PDL this summer. Would be too bad if he fell off the map, seemed to have promise.

The starting keeper at Syracuse is a freshman from Ontario Robert C.(don't remeber is last name). I don't know if Karim is injured but it's surprising not seeing him starting.

It's Robert Cavicchia that is getting all the starts right now at Syracuse. They are off to a decent start and he seems to be playing well according to match recaps and game stats.

Thanks for clarifying that about Karim, takes a bit of the disappointment off. I think the kid is playing quite well, though it is odd he'd replace a senior and regular starter.

Syracuse is actually doing well, after having a losing season last year.

The match reports seem to indicate that Brad Peetoom and Richard Assante are both playing well too. For all that he seemed to struggle at the WYC, Peetoom is likely to be a good player at the NCAA level from what little I've seen of him.

Ironically, since we started talking about it, the Orange have dropped two straight in Big East Conference play. They lost last week to Notre Dame 0-1 and lost 3-2 at Providence tonight. Cavicchia has taken both losses, including surrendering the winning goal with under a minute to play in tonights game.

Some interesting scores from Friday night: Daniel Bell recorded the win for Buffalo as they beat Colgate 2-1 to go 8-0-0 in the young season. Shyle Braithwaite also started for the Bulls.

Vasilis Androutsos scored for Fairfield in a 2-1 loss at Harvard. Kerr McLeod also started for the Stags.

Amar Takhar scored and Rowan Anders picked up the win for Dartmouth as they beat Drake 2-1. The Big Green move to 2-1-3 on the season.

Josh Wagenaar made nine saves and Tyler Hemmings also started for Hartwick as they beat Portland 2-1. Alex Elliot started and had six shots for the Pilots but couldn't beat his countryman.

Francis Mavula had a goal and Ryan Smith started for Quinnipiac in a 4-2 win over Columbia.

Daniel Revivo scored the goal in Winthrop's 1-1 draw with Birmingham Southern.

Jordie Hughes picked up an assist in Coastal Carolina's 4-3 win over Virginia Commonwealth.

Other games of note starting late on the west coast has UAB at Stanford and UCSB hosting Alabama A&M. On Sunday, the highest ranked team that features Canadians, No. 10 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson, plays host to Columbia.

Anyways, I'll update more over the course of the weekend.

Who seems like the most likely of the NCAA seniors to make the jump to the pros? Liam Gerard would seem to be a good choice as he already was all-PDL this summer. I would think that the lack of exposure is not going to help Karim this year. I also have a soft spot for Konrad Paskowski as he was a member of the original PDL Storm so I hope he tries to make it somewhere.

Also confused about Chris Williams at Columbia. He has a bio but is not listed on the roster or anywhere else I can see. Is this the same Chris Williams on the Lynx and is he really at Columbia?

Edit: Sorry I just realized this is for NCAA Div 1. But that goalie is some size. :)

Update on Robert Cavicchia & Richard Assante @ Syracuse University:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) scored with 11 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Orange (7-6-3, 3-5-1 BIG EAST) to a 2-1 win against BIG EAST Red Division foe Louisville (5-9-2, 2-5-2 BIG EAST) at the Cardinal Park Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 22. SU earned three critical points in the league standings with the triumph and moved ahead of Louisville into sixth place in the Red Division standings heading into the final week of the regular season.

Rowley found the back of the net off a cross from junior Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) at 109:49. It was Rowley’s team-leading sixth goal of the season and his first since Sept. 23 at Providence. The score marked his second golden goal of 2005. Asante’s picked up his first assist of the year and the third of his career on the play.

Saturday night’s match was tightly contested and physical the entire way. The game featured 37 fouls between the two clubs and four yellow cards.

SU rookie Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) scored in the 40th minute to give SU a 1-0 lead, but the Cardinals responded at the 75:33 mark with a goal by John Jonke to tie the match.

In the first overtime, sophomore Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y.) almost ended the game in the 96th minute, ripping a shot off the crossbar. Syracuse earned a corner kick following Collings’ near miss and the Orange reeled off three consecutive shots, two of which were stopped Louisville keeper Steven DeGeorge. SU kept firing in the extra session and a shot by Asante with three seconds remaining in the period sailed wide.

The Orange generated two of the three shots launched in the second overtime, a blast Rowley (Reading, Pa.) that went wide and his eventual game-winner. SU also earned the only two corner kicks of the period, including one at 109:32, 25 seconds before Rowley’s game-winner.

Schomaker’s goal was his second of the season and he moved up to third on the team with six points. Freshman goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made five saves in the contest. He has 68 saves on the season and improved to 6-6-3 on the year, one victory shy of tying Chris Whitcomb and Kevin Bacher for 10th on SU’s single-season wins ledger.

Shots in the match were even at 13 apiece, but seven of SU’s came in overtime to just two for Louisville. The Orange owned the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2, three of which came in the extra sessions.

Syracuse will play its sixth and final road match of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Rutgers. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.
