Canuck Oranje
I thought I would share some findings from a report on sports participation in Canada by the Conference Board of Canada and recently released. A national household survey was completed in December 2004 that looked at adult participation (over 16) in sport. First, in the area of active participants, the survey estimates on the basis of popularity 1. Ice hockey - 6.6% of adults or 1,646,000 2. Golf - 6.5% or 1,621,000 3. Baseball - 4.7% or 1,172,000 4. Skiing - 4.0% or 998,000 5. Soccer - 3.8% or 948,000 6. Volleyball - 3.1% or 773,000 7. Basketball - 2.8% or 698,000 8. Tennis - 2.6% or 649,000 9. Curling - 2.6% or 649,000 10. Bowling - 2.4% or 599,000 Volunteers on the basis of popularity 1. Ice hockey - 4.7% or 1,172,00 2. Soccer - 4.1% or 1,072,000 3. Baseball - 2.5% or 624,000 4. Volleyball - 2.0% or 499,000 5. Basketball - 1.6% or 399,000 Attendees on the basis of popularity 1. Ice hockey - 20.7% or 5,163,000 2. Soccer - 11.8% or 2,943,000 3. Baseball - 7.9% or 1,970,000 4. Basketball - 6.1% or 1,522,000 5. Volleyball - 4.5% or 1,122,000 The list of sports is extensive. I don't think any are excluded. Some of my observations regarding soccer. I suspect that it is a sport where attendees are largely family members attending youth games. However, a large percentage of ice hockey attendees are doing the same and the difference between hockey and soccer probably represents attendance at professional and junior games. Participation as volunteers shouldn't surprise anyone involved in minor sports. Active participation of adults should not surpise anyone either. I only glanced at the report so far so I don't know what questions were asked in the survey but I suspect it asked about participation rather than registered participation. The Conference Board report, I think, is available only through subscription but I suspect some of the news services should have access as well.
