Gordon
Caught the U of S Huskies playing U of Calgary Dinos this afternoon. Final score 4-0 for Calgary, although the score was not at all refelctive of the play. Huskies are a young club, with 11 rookies dressing and 8 (possibly 9*) starting. They gave up much in the way of experience and size to the Dinos and all of Calgary's goals came as a result of this gulf. First half the Dino's were the more dominate team and came away with a 1-0 lead after scoring on a nice volley from in the box after 2 seperate Huskies lacked the height and the strength to head the ball clear of the box. The Huskies were somewhat tentative and Calgary was able to musle their way onto the ball virtually every 50-50. The second half saw the Huskies dominate in possession and chances. The Huskies used their quickness to win most of the 50-50 balls, and created a number of glorious scoring chances. Huskie midfielder Nathan Reis - one of the few vets - missed a sitter 5 minutes in, then another 5 minutes later. Another glorious Huskie scoring chance went wanting when a desperate lunge by a Dino defender resulted in a toe deflecting a shot at a gapping net just over the bar. A 4th excellent chance was well saved by the Dino keeper. Alas, the inexperience of the Huskies caught them when a quick free kick resulted in an out of position defender pulling down a Dino player in the box, and Calgary scoring on the subsequent penalty. Calgary got their third goal of a header that was reasonably well defended, but the Huskie defender gave up to much size and was outmuscled for the ball. The 4 Calgary goal came off a similar play, although this time the ball was knocked into the net by a Huskie defender. These Huskies will have a long season ahead of them I think. They have some very good young players - and I'd say were substantially more skilled with the ball at their feet on average than the Dino's, but they have much to learn about playing the game at this level and they need to get bigger and stronger to compete. The Dinos are well organized, and generally a good team, but do not have any standout players. Their offence came via the cross and a long throw-in from their number 13 - Ramos is his name I think. He lofted several into the box and caused the smaller Huskies no end of trouble. The Dinos took their chances very well and although the score does not refect the balnce of play between the boxes, no one can really complain that the goals were undeserved. The moment of the match came when Saskatchewan's holding mdfielder Alvi Campos (from Guatemala City by way of Lyn Oslo FC) nailed Calgary's #16 who had been mouthing off about Campos only 30 seconds earlier. It was a classic case of skill envy by the Calgary player - Campos had just embarrased 3 Calgary players along the touchline (Campos was the best player on the field) only for it to cross (barely) the touchline. The Calgary player was loudly beaking off about the uselessness of Campos' moves. He wasn't beaking after getting hit though, as he would have needed to draw a breath to do so. Classic! Huskie are now 0-3, having lost at home to Alberta and Lethbridge by identical 1-0 scorelines. * I say possibly 9 as one player was wearing a number not listed in th eprogram and of the 7 unnumber players on the roster, 5 were rookies. David C.
I managed to pop by Varsity "stadium" for the second half of the Toronto-York match, on Sunday afternoon. They played to a o-o tie. Overall, I found the passing to be poor, as both teams seems to impatiently boot the ball upfield, rather than make the easy pass and work to keep control. Part of this could have been due to the bumpy field conditions and the fact that it is still early in the season. UofT have a very good defensive foursome. Both wingbacks handle the ball well, especially their left-back, who looks and plays like Kuklowski. One of the two central defenders (#6 I think?) is very reliable and fast - and might be the team's best player. Their midfield didn't seem very cohesive but they do have a feisty little striker (#9 I think?). York seemed better organized up front and had some great battles with UofT's defense. #3 and #13 were pretty active for them. A decent crown of about 150 showed up. It was nice to see some kind of soccer in the downtown area, for a change. On a sidenote, I think that UofT should really reconsider builing their proposed 5,000 seat grandstand on the East side of the field. The sun was in directly our faces all game long, which was very annoying. They should build on the West side instead, where the previous stands were used, before the old stadium got torn down. EZmac
Soccer: McGill tops first national rankings OTTAWA (CIS) - McGill University's soccer teams, silver medalists at both the women's and men's CIS championships a year ago, dominate the first national polls of the 2005 season. The Martlets (2-0-0), who dropped a heartbreaking decision on penalty kicks to the Trinity Western Spartans in the 2004 CIS final, top the female rankings, with the UBC Thunderbirds and the Western Ontario Mustangs following in order. McGill opened the new campaign with 2-0 and 2-1 victories over UQTR and Concordia, respectively. The Martlets host Sherbrooke on Friday and travel to Laval on Sunday. The reigning CIS champion Spartans find themselves in sixth position following a rough start that saw them tie UBC 2-2 and lose to Victoria by 1-0. On the men's side, the Redmen (2-0-0), who lost to the Victoria Vikes by 3-1 in last year's CIS gold medal game, are also ranked ahead of UBC, with the Toronto Varsity Blues and Western Ontario tied for third place. McGill has been perfect so far in 2005, shutting out UQTR 1-0 before crushing Concordia, 8-0. The Redmen also play Sherbrooke and Laval this weekend. The defending CIS champion Vikes are not listed in the first national Top 10. The Victoria men have tied Trinity Western 1-1 and were shutout by UBC, 2-0, in their first two outings. Here are the first CIS soccer rankings of the 2005 season. Women's Top 10 1. McGill 2. UBC 3. Western Ontario 4. Montreal 5. Queen's 6. Trinity Western 7. Calgary 8. UPEI 9. Memorial T10. EZmac
OTTAWA (CIS) - The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds dominate the CIS soccer world. UBC takes over from the McGill Redmen at the top of this week's men's national poll, a day after the program was ranked first on the women's side. The Thunderbird soccer teams find themselves atop the national rankings simultaneously for the first time since the last poll of the 1994 season. 11 years ago, UBC was seeded first entering both the men's and women's national championships. The men went on to capture the title, while their female counterparts claimed the silver medal. The T-Bird men improved their 2005 regular-season record to 3-0-1 over the past week with a 4-0 domination of Saskatchewan and a hard-fought, 2-1 victory over Alberta. UBC goes on the road this weekend to face the No. 4-ranked Calgary Dinos (3-0-0) and the Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-2-0) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Rounding out the top five this week are the undefeated Western Ontario Mustangs (3-0-1), up one position, UPEI Panthers (5-0-1), up two spots, Dinos, moving up all the way from eighth place, and Toronto Varsity Blues (3-0-2), down from No. 3. Former No. 1 McGill slides all the way down to 10th place following consecutive 1-0 losses to Sherbrooke and Laval. Men's Top 10 (previous rankings) / (record) 1. UBC (2) / (3-0-1) 2. David C. Gordon
The rookie laden Saskatchewan Huskies have done something that no other Saskatchewan team has ever done: Sweep Victoria. A 1-0 win at home 2 weekends ago was powered by a 21 save performance from Rookie Keeper Derrick Ng. The 3-1 victory this past Sunday in Victoria a little more comfortable for the Huskies. The wins put them in 5th Canada West at 2-5. One wonders if this is representing a turning point for the Huskies - although the last playoff spot is probably out of reach baring an Alberta collapse. Time will tell.
David C.
In Ontario, #6-ranked Brock had a disapointing visit to Toronto. On Saturday, they could only manage a 0-0 tie with #10 York, then they got clobbered 4-0 on Sunday, against #5 Toronto. Both Toronto schools won their other games against McMaster. #2 Western Ontario only had one game scheduled and used it to easily beat Windsor 4-0. After 7 games, Toronto and York lead the league with 17 points each. Western and Carleton have 13 points each, with two full games in hand. Brock (14 points in 7 games), Laurier (10 points in only 4 games) and Queen's (13 in 6) are other teams to keep an eye on, going into a relatively quiet Thanksgiving weekend schedule. Invariably, it takes a veteran team to win Nationals and U Vic was no exception. They're a young squad this year. Personally, I think Trinity Western will rise to the top with UBC ahead of the rest of the pack. The other squads are all in rebuilding years. U of C are really, really young, Alberta lost 3 starters just before the start of the season and Saskatchewan is also young. Lethbridge seem to have a better team than last year, but it's always an uphill battle for them.
Gordon
I think the top three teams in Canada West will be Trinty Western, UBC and Calgary. Not sure who is hosting the playoff tournament but if it is one of the 3 above, then Alberta will be the 4th team. Not sure about the national picture, but agree that TW will be the team to beat in Canada West. Calgary could surprise though.

EZmac
OTTAWA (CIS) - The Montreal Carabins top the CIS women's soccer national poll for the second consecutive week, while the UBC Thunderbirds lead the male rankings for the fourth time in as many weeks this fall. On the women's side, Quebec conference leading Carabins improved to 8-0-2 on the season with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Sherbrooke (4-5-1) and a 5-0 shutout of Bishop's (1-9-0). Montreal, holding a slim one-point lead over the No. 4 McGill Martlets (8-1-1) atop the QSSF standings, host Concordia (6-4-0) on Friday night, and visit UQAM (2-8-0) on Sunday. The Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-0-3), UBC Thunderbirds (7-1-3) and McGill stay put in positions 2 through 4. No. 2 Ottawa posted consecutive shutouts to remain undefeated on the year. The Gee-Gees, who hold a five-point advantage over No. 7 Queen's in the OUA East, blanked Waterloo (4-3-2) 1-0 and Laurier (1-6-2) 2-0. No. 3 UBC, first in Canada West with a three-point lead over No. 8 Victoria, had a perfect 3-0 road trip edging Trinity Western (5-4-2) 3-2 before notching convincing 4-0 and 8-0 wins over Manitoba (4-7-2) and Regina (0-13-0), respectively. No. 4 McGill beat Concordia (6-4-0) 1-0 and UQTR (1-8-1) 2-1 to keep within striking distance of No. 1 Montreal. No. 2 Western had a huge weekend in OUA-West play. The Mustangs posted back-to-back 1-0 shutouts over the Laurier Golden Hawks (5-2-1) and tied Waterloo (3-4-1) 1-1 to open a four-point lead over the Hawks in their division. UPEI drops two spots this week following a costly 1-0 loss to Memorial. No. 5 Montreal blanked Sherbrooke (3-5-1) 2-0 in its only outing. DJT
Wow, actual soccer in this section of the forum! Thanks EZMac. I don't think it's been mentioned yet that the national championships will thankfully not be in Montreal this year after being there for two years in a row. The men will be at UPEI in Charlottetown and the women will be at U of A in Edmonton (but they were there in 2002 - why not more variety?). Both tournaments are November 10-13. Go Toronto! Eeeck, the men lost to Laurentian.
Gordon
A conflict with my sons' basketball game prevented attendance, but on Saturday, the rookie ladden U of S Huskies beat the previously unbeaten and the national number 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds 1-0 in Saskatoon. They play TWU today. Interesting season for the Huskies, some serious beatings, swept by the alberta teams (including Lethbridge...ugh!) but beating UVic twice for the first time ever and yesterday's win over UBC on the plus side. Starting 9 rookies, indications are that this has the makings of a very good CIS soccer team in the years to come, provided they can keep this team together. Gordon
Trinity Western University will be giving thanks all the way back to Langley today as they escape Saskatoon with a 1-0 victory. Saskatchewan came agonizingly close on a half dozen glorious scoring chances in the first half and another 3 more in the second. TWU scored a very nice goal off a well place Freekick by Nick Perguini which was headed into the net by the TWU Forward. TWU also had another very good chance in the second have when a two on one resulting from a poor touch by a Saskatchewan defender resulting in the TWU curling a shot just wide of the net. But Saskatchewan was the better team by a wide margin and played an attractive skillful game on the ground. Seldom was a ball hoofed up field, even in desperation. Unlike TWU which played exclusively the long ball/track meet game, Saskatchewan strung together many passes and frequently beat their TWU opponent dribbling the ball as well. First half, with a strong wind at their backs, Saskatchewan had at least 2/3rds of the possession and as noted, generated 6 glorious chances. The second half, with the wind at TWU's back, the possession was a little more even, in large measure due to the number of TWU long balls resulting in Saskatchewan goal kicks. TWU also turned the game into a rugby match using obstruction and their size and strength advantage to slow down the Saskatchewan attack - very smart tactic by TWU although it earned them 3 yellows in the process. Saskatchewan outchanced TWU by a 3-1 margin, and held a wide gap in skill level when the ball was shoulder height or lower. Their chances, except for one, were not so much squandered as unlucky to be missed. TWU much stronger in the air, and experienced and savy enough to use their size and strength to defend against Saskatchewan once it became obvious they were outskilled. Perhaps simply a poor showing by TWU today. But if this is reflective of their team, then I do not expect that even home field advantage will help them emerge from Canada West this year. Saskatchewan needs more experience, and they really need more height and strength in the backline as they are regularly punished by Canada West teams hammering balls into the box. Keeper Derrick Ng also needs to greaty improve his arial game as well as the one TWU goal should have been collected by him. This too may be a matter of experience. As it stands, every cross into Saskatchewan's area is an adventure.
