TOareaFan
quote:Originally posted by Johnnie Monster So when all is said and done, Kerfoot will have invested around $60 million in Vancouver's soccer scene over the past three years (the bulk of that being the new downtown stadium). And you wonder why us west-coasters are pissed off about Toronto's $32 million tax hand out, huh? I agree that people in Vancouver (and Montreal) should wonder about the feds and CSA focusing all of their energy (and cash)on Toronto...I imagine that is because of two reasons FIFA awarded the tournament on the basis there would be an acceptable facility in Toronto They think they only have enough money to get one built. As I have said in numerous postings...if they use some of the cash they have to upgrade Lamport....they might just meet both of those challenges in one location. That being said, Toronto will not be the first city in Canada to receive a "tax handout" and I think we are all guilty of noticing when another region benefits from a tax handout and thinking "we never get our share". Our federal system is built around moving money around the country....Ontario right now can't find money to build hospitals and roads but is still in a deficit and is still sending over $20 billion a year more to the Federal government than they receive in transfer payments...it is just how the system works. On the point of the soccer stadium, I happen to think they (CSA) are making a mistake allocating it to one stadium rather than a bunch...but before Vancouverites complain about Toronto receiving $27 million of federal money for a soccer stadium (the rest is provincial money so you wouldn't get that anyway) you might want to wait and see how much federal money is finally spent on the 2010 olympics before you ask us to give back that measly $27 million. Free kick
But who are the bumbling boobs, the CSA or the politicians? To anyone who feels that the CSA has dropped the ball on the whole file, I am curious to know how you would have handled it differently? Taking Toronto out of the 2007 picture completely would be very tempting and if I were in Pipe's position, it would ( after reading those comments by that idiot councillor) give me a lot of satisfaction to do so. But then what about MLS? Like it or not, MLS seems to want TO for demographic, econiomic..etc reasons and Canadian soccer needs more a professional enviroment to develop and retain local talent. Is Saputo interested in MLS? Doesn't look like. Is the MLS equally interested in Vancouver? We've read nothing from MLS HQ stating so. Then what about FIFA, are they interested in staging one its major events in a country and exclude it largest city?
Gian-Luca
It could be that Pipe piping up now is to get all the public whining & complaints out of the way now, bringing things to a head now before it really is too late. No matter where you put a stadium, there will be Nimby's objecting, that's probably par for the course. Joe Pantalone is Deputy Mayor & apparently also on the Board of Directors of Exhibition Place. Perhaps that's why he's now under the impression that there is no public transit that goes to Downsview.
Massive Attack
The Downsview site is closer to the subway line then the Exhibition site.
Gian-Luca
Don't worry I know that - that's why I find Pantalone's comments that Exhibition Stadium is the better location transportation wise, and that Downsview can only be accessed by car, to be totally laughable. This from the guy who tore down Exhibition Place to begin with. No wonder they can't come to an agreement with this guy.
Massive Attack
I agree pretty much with everything you've said in the last few stadium thread, G-L. I made that point for forum members not from the Toronto area, so they can get an idea. Personally, I don't care where the stadium is built. I'm willing to go to either locations to watch a game. Gian-Luca
I think the only form of transportation that is more accessible for Exhibition Place than Downsview is boat, since its on the lake. Perhaps the plans for the stadium at Exhibition will include a new dock, one for hometown supporters and another for out of town fans from Columbus who sail up Lake Erie and then Lake Ontario. RealGooner
Exhibition Place is nicer because its downtown. Imagine soccer fans going for drinks in all the bars around Richmond and Adelaide streets before and after games etc, but its no more accessible than Downsview Park. Downsview makes sense from the perspective of the national Sports centre proposed for the area. As for the NIMBY people, jeez did they prefer to have the airbase there than a measely stadium? Get a life. Joe Pantalone needs to shut his mouth if he is going to provide more hot air than cash.

Okay!!!! Right!!!! The Spec is owned by the Star. Your comments are what I hate about how the media in North America have brainwashed people. That you're, "a little left", has nothing to do with FACTS. I really don't care what a newspaper's editorial policy is, either you agree or you don't. That's fine. The problem is when they present editorials as facts. Like anything they have written about the Balkans in the past 15 years has been 100% complete bullsh*t. Same with the middle East. Pissing off both sides doesn't mean you got the story right. It means you got both sides of the story wrong.
zacRWE
I know that Torstar owns the Spec, I have graduated from a Journalism course.... I can understand your argument that we have all been brainwashed but it is known that the Star tends to back the Liberal party and the Globe tends to back the Conservative party. But who really cares? I simply made that staement because you have deemed the Star (Canada's largest publication) as not being credible. I just said that they were, which they are, to stress that this stadium in Toronto is going to get built. I know papers make mistakes but it's not like the stadium piece was written and reported by the Sesame Street Times!!! I really dont want to talk newspapers though... it's a soccer board... beachesl
Topic thepatriot 18 Posts Posted - 09/08/2005 : 18:57:00 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you not find it funny that yet once again there is not one person from either the Federal, Provincial or Municipal government confirming Kevan Pipe's affirmations that a stadium will be built at the Downsview site. Once again the CSA has jumped the gun acting only on the fact that the CSA BOG has backed the Downsview site. Beyond that, trust me, nothing has been achieved. Nothing has been signed. More to come, but I'd thought I let the gang know. --------------------- Right, we already have this thread (dealing with CSA's plans to push the Downsview), and the "Mayor" one (dealing with tthe political reaction), let's keep the Toronto Stadium issue limited to these two threads so the debate/discussion doesn't get any more schizophrenic then it already has, okay? ..unless , of course, there is a major confirmed announcement that actually changes things radically and warrants another thread, in which case we would lock up these and continue in the new direction. I'd say I'm still right. I don't know how a subway ride + a streetcar ride can be considered better than just a subway ride where taking an additional street car is unnecessary. As for the GO Train Station, there are Go Train tracks that go by the Downsview location. It would be far easier & affordable to put a train stop there than build a new subway line that goes to the Ex.

Relax...you said the only form of transportation that has better access to Exhibition than Downsview were boats. I simply pointed out that streetcars and GO trains currently have better access to the Exhibition ground than they do to Downsview (currently neither have any access to Downsview). While you are correct that a subway to a streetcar is not as convenient as a direct subway. There are a couple of points glossed over. Let's say, for example, Canada is playing Mexico on a Wednesday night. The biggest employmnet node in Toronto is still downtown toronto. It is much shorter streetcar ride from Union Station (which you can walk to from all the office towers) to the Ex than the subway ride to Downsview is! Any day of the week, people from Mississauga, Brampton, Whitby, Ajax Markham, etc etc. can get public transit (GO) to Union station (some of them direct to the EX) and then link to those streetcars....their current public transit links to Downsview are still through Union (pretty much the entire GO system is designed to get people to Union) and you are back at that point of comparison - is it shorter by streetcar to the Ex or by Subway to Downsview....again, the Ex wins. Downsview is marginally more convenient by car, but only marginally given how close to the Gardiner/QEW the Ex is. I am still a Lamport proponent, but my second choice is the EX. Specially if they are talking about building the stadium at the Keele/Shepperd end of Downsview....now you just lost your subway advantage all together given the length of walk that would be from the station (Allen/Sheppard). Just one man's opinion.

I have explained my thoughts on Lamport to Mr. Pantalone and the chair of the site selection committee for 2007...have asked them to take a few minutes to tell me why an expanded Lamport is impossible...both said they would, neither has.
