Spain warm up for Serbia with 2-1 win over Canada

By Victor Fraile

SANTANDER, Spain, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Neatly taken strikes from Raul Tamudo and Fernando Morientes earned unimpressive Spain a 2-1 win at home to Canada in a friendly international on Saturday.

Espanyol centre-forward Tamudo put Spain ahead with a fine header early on in the first half and Liverpool striker Morientes scored his 25th goal for the national side with an opportunist effort 20 minutes from time.

ADVERTISEMENTCanada replied with the best goal of the night when substitute Sandro Grande netted with a stunning 20-metre first-time shot three minutes later.

"We didn't give a good image of ourselves and played pretty poorly. It showed we were at the start of the season," said Spain coach Luis Aragones.

With one eye on next week's World Cup qualifier against Group Seven leaders Serbia & Montenegro, Aragones fielded his second-string line-up to start the game.

The home side still made a promising start when Albert Luque created Spain's opener in the seventh minute.

The Newcastle United forward picked out the unmarked Tamudo with a ballooning cross from the left and the little striker finished off by sending a perfectly placed header back across the goal and inside the near post.

Canada, who are already out of running for World Cup qualification, were slow to warm to the task but pressed hard towards the end of the first half and put together some neat passing play in midfield.

Dwayne de Rosario tested keeper Pepe Reina with a snap shot in the 36th minute and the Liverpool player made an excellent reflex save to beat away a fierce drive from fellow striker Tomasz Radzinski after slack marking by the Spanish defence.

Tamudo almost got a second for Spain at the start of the second half when he cut into the area from the left, but keeper Kenny Stamatopoluos reacted quickly to block his drilled shot.

Aragones then decided to send on his first-choice strike partnership of Raul and Morientes as well as winger Joaquin earlier in the second half.

It was Morientes who extended the Spanish lead 20 minutes from time when he steered in from a tight angle after Stamatopoulos spilled a back heel from Raul following a neat through ball from De la Pena.

Canada replied almost immediately when midfielder Grande scored with a stunning 20-metre curler a minute after stepping on to the pitch.

Raul could have added a third for Spain in the dying minutes, but the Real Madrid striker was denied first by Stamatopoulos and a minute later by the woodwork.

Spain edge Canada in friendly

September 3, 2005

MADRID (AFP) - Spain edged out visiting Canada 2-1 in a friendly to give themselves a boost of sorts ahead of next week's crucial World Cup qualifier against Serbia.

Spain, playing in the northern city of Santander, took the lead after just seven minutes following a spell of early pressure.

Newcastle's new signing Albest Luque produced some good work on the left and after he whipped the ball in Raul Tamudo headed home.

ADVERTISEMENTCanada then settled and denied their hosts space before going two behind midway through the second period.

Ivan de la Pena found Raul, whose first effort rebounded to former Real Madrid teammate Feranndo Morientes on 70 minutes and he netted his 25th goal in 40 internationals.

But almost straight from the restart the visitors clawed a goal back with a fine strike from Sandro Grande minutes from the end to give the score a respectable air for Canada.

Who wrote this crap? I doubt Spain will feel too much of a boost from a victory of the slimmest of margins against Canada at home, and its not like 2-0 wouldn't have been considered a "respectable" result for Canada.

From CSA (who finally decided to admit there was a match!):

Canada Earns Respect In 2-1 Loss To Spain

Canada´s Men´s World Cup team turned in one of their most impressive performances in Europe in recent years in suffering a 2-1 loss to Spain in an international friendly in Santander, Spain, Saturday.

Sandro Grande scored a memorable goal in the 71st minute to reduce a two-goal deficit and reward the visitors for their play. Grande pounced on a poor clearance and hammered a side footed shot past Spanish (and Liverpool)goalkeeper Reina and into the far corner.

"I am delighted with our performance tonight," said Canadian head coach Frank Yallop. "It proves to me that we can play with the best teams when we have correct preparation and the players have not had to travel a long way. We decided to go after them and I was really impressed with our overall play. We took on one of the best teams in the World and did ourselves proud."

Spain, ranked no. 6 in the FIFA World Rankings, opened the scoring in the 7th minute when striker Tamudo beat Canadian goalkeeper Kenny Stamatopoulos with a free header off a deep cross into the box.

The Canadians enjoyed a good spell before halftime and they almost found the equalizer when Tomasz Radzinski, who was electric all night, pulled off an impressive strike from a Patrice Bernier corner which Reina did well to save. The rebound fell to Dwayne de Rosario who blazed his shot over the bar.

The Spanish, realizing they had a game on their hands prior to their crucial World Cup Qualifier against Serbia and Montenegro on Wednesday, brought in Xabi Alonso, Raul, Morientes, Xavi, Vicente and Joaquin.

Morientes gave the home team a 2-0 lead in the 69th minute when he gathered a loose ball and chipped it into the open Canadian goal.

After their goal, the Canadians pressed for more and came close on two ocassions. Grande played de Rosario in late in the game and the San Jose Earthquake player almost netted the equalizer but his fierce strike hit the side netting.

With only minutes left in the game, substitute Rocco Placentino found himself inside the box with the ball on his favoured left foot. His shot just missed the far post low to Reina´s right and the hosts breathed a sigh of relief.

Canada also looked to have had two legitimate penalty calls ignored by referee Claude Colombo. The first was an obvious hand ball in the area in the first half while the second chanec occurred when de Rosario appeared to be hauled down while trying to get to a Radzinski cross.

The Canadians earned a great deal of respect from their hosts by playing an attacking 4-3-3 formation with Tomasz Radzinski, Ali Gerba and Dwayen de Rosario spearheading the attack. Bernier, Julian de Guzman and Adrian Seroiux formed the midfield with the back four comprising Mike Klukowski at left back with Kevin McKenna and Atiba Hutchinson in the middle and Adam Braz at right back.

Josh Simpson came on for Gerba in the 66th minute, Grande came on for Bernier and Placentino subbed in for de Rosario.

Watched the second half of the match on that grainy Spanish internet feed.

From what I saw, Canada really did not fear the Spanish, and looked to be playing their own game. Obviously, the Spaniards had more of the ball (not much) and some better offensive forays, but I think that's just the difference in skill level between the number 3 and number 85 teams in the world.

If this is what future Frank Yallop coached teams are going to play like (and I think we're slowly starting to see FY's style imposed on this team as he gets more time), then I'd say things are looking up. That being said, this is only one match, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

From what I saw of Kenny S. in goal, he looks to be a decent shot stopper but really gives up a lot of easy rebounds, one of which was capitalized on by the world-class Spanish attack. Still, he's earned another look, as this performance may just be nerves.

I could not resist, sorry, but here we go again.I am the told you so guy who has been showing a tremendous faith in our kids and you know why because I saw them on a daily basis. I saw them fight and perform and I listened to them. I compared them to the Dutch star whom I know very personally and you know what , there is no difference. Even skill wise I found very little to compare to and yes we have a hockey society which could be used to our advantage. The raw raw stuff not known in the worlds cirles may be of some advantage. So to all these screwed critics of the governing bodies wich includes Alfons, smarten up,we are good all we need is the support of the Media. You know what, I stopped calling these idiots and especially the Star and you know what, we don't exist or for that matter in TV land.

Shall I again spent all my time to get some interest.

How did Braz do aginst Luque overall?

See my report on the match in another thread. I think that Braz was really strong on the night, facing Luque first and Vicente later. Considering he could be had for 50,000 bucks he is the best deal in Canada right now.

No Kidding!!!!We have heard several acknowledgements from Yallop and CSA officials since the time Canada was eliminated from WCQ, that travel and fatigue are major factors in performance and preparation.

Yet I am still baffled ( and will continue to so so) by their venue selections for the later games in our latest WCQ effort. They excerbated the problem and it seems like they clued when it was too late and finally admitted to something that would seem obvious to anybody. I still don't get and can't help but imagagine what if?

How about no one else wanted to take on hosting the fixtures and the CSA and it's employees had to put on their best face defending Swangard as a venue?

St. John's, Newfoundland I tell yah. Crap stadium or no. It's not like Swangard sets the bar too high is it? Make those CAs fly as far as possible, keeps our boys close to Europe and their supporters 10,000 miles from nowhere.

Damn. I should run for president.

St. Johns, if there is a facility, would be great. I don't know that any city has ever taken on hosting the fixtures for international soccer in Canada. The CSA picks the venue if its available. simple as that. There were venues in Ottawa and Montreal ( two venues in Mtl) and no one has yet to explain to me why they were not selected for that very very critical game against Costa Rica. Imagine what could have happened had we won that game?

I had no problems with the earlier games given that the players were not in Europe. That was four hours of travel that would have been saved as well as additional travel required for the Ticos.

I just saw the highlights on FSW and I have to say that the Grande goal has to be one of the best for Canada since I've been watching them.(Almost 30 years).Grande has the best shot on the team and it's nice to see him get one.He hits it hard and on goal most of the time.

There was a brutal Canada miss in the first half that would have levelled the score.Couldn't tell who it was but it was after a rebound of a good Canada shot. The rebound was hit high over the bar when a shot on goal would probabaly have tied the game.

Stamatopolous should have held on to the ball on the 2nd Spain goal.McKenna was livid on that play.

Likely watched the same hilights last evening. Brilliant effort!

However, being the cynic that I am I could not resist a ruefull chuckle thinking to myself that more often than not, that shot would have hit the corner flag or ended up in the seats rather than in the back of the net [smile]

There must be some Spanish fans who have only seen Canada play twice; this game and that U20 game against Spain in the 1/4 finals. Those fans could be excuse for thinking great ball striking is common amongst our players. Those are two of the better goals we have scored and both were versus Spain. Yet the Hume goal at the UAE and this one stand quite a bit alone considering that IMO this is something that we have been missing in our play over the years.

We didn't see this kind of quality ball striking too often in WCQ. Though it must be said that, were it not for a superbe save, Grande would have score a beauty from about 20 meters out, early in the game, against Costa Rica last October in Burnaby. So yes, this is a much needed deminsion that he brings to the team. Much like Xuasa did earlier on in his careers. But for some reason, Xuasa ( who had a decent career professionaly) didn't attain the level on playing internationally that I initially thought.

I'm sorry if this was already answered somewhere, but where was Stalteri?

Well, it hasn't been clearly answered before. The best was from Davidson's interview article with Yallop of August 24, when Davidson wrote of what Yallop said:

"Fullback Paul Stalteri, who has drawn good reviews starting both of Spurs' English Premier League games this season, is another who is given the Spain game off but will be back for Luxembourg."

Stalteri has not commented, but it is probably a joint resolution between Yallop and Stalteri to allow Paul some breathing room to concentrate on his position at Tottenham. I suspect that there was some understanding between them and Jols even before the Spurs season began before Jols committed to giving Paul a good start to cement the right back position.

The stadium in St.John's IS NOT CRAP!

Isn't it also bigger than Swangard ?
