I just got this e-mail:

Hello all,

You recently emailed us regarding the upcoming Canada/Spain soccer match. We have been able to get the broadcasting rights for that match on tape delay. It will air at 11:30 pm (ET) on Sportsnet East and Sportsnet Ontario on Thursday September 8. It will air at midnight (MT) on Sportsnet West and midnight (PT) on Sportsnet Pacific the morning of Friday September 9. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Jim LaChapelle

Well at least our trust in the Patriot has been well placed - he spot on with his insider comments.

I had thought it would be later in labour day weekend, but I guess this explains why they haven't promoted it yet since this broadcast is still a bit aways (and is a "repeat" on top of that).

Is the game going to be on regular cable or only on the digital feeds? As we've learned from past experience, the two are completely different. When the people at Sportsnet talk about Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Ontario, Sportsnet West and Sportsnet Pacific they are usually referring to the digital feeds, which may or may not be the same as the regular cable feed.

Not that it matters. Who's going to stay up until 2 am on a week night to watch a week-old game when the bittorrent will be available the day after it's played. It might catch a few insomniacs who don't normally watch soccer but are looking for anything other than infomercials to entertain them in the wee hours.

Gee couldn't they put the game on at 4am or something to completely put viewers off? I'm sure they had a meeting to discuss what would be the best time to put the game on to ensure the fewest viewers. They wouldn't want someone to be flipping channels and accidentally catch part of the game. That might create some interest in the mens national team, and they wouldn't want that.

I guess it's better than nothing and I think I shouldn't have too much trouble actually avoiding the score until Wednesday if I wanted to. Thanks for looking for a place in Ottawa Sigma, I couldn't go see it live even if you or I found a place.

cheers,

matthew

P.S. should I meantion that the men's national team has never lost a game while I'm in Ontario? 4-0 heading into Saturday . . .

Regarding all the comments about why they couldn't show this match live (whether on regular or digital feeds) or later on Saturday, if our Sportsnet insider was correct (as he was about there being a tape-delayed broadcast at all) then the reason has nothing to do with other events on Sportsnet's schedule. It has to do with the fact that Sportsnet (in particular, the soccer crew) is already committed to the two women's matches this weekend. If you want to complain then focus on this.

I find it really strange that most comments about things like the Lynx and World Football Pages are along the lines of "they're businesses, no one owes them any favours", yet when it comes to Sportsnet showing a Canada match such concerns are ignored.

It's cause different people are responding. Your quote is basically what I said in the other thread, and I also agree that Sportsnet does not owe anybody, especially not soccer. Sportsnet is a business.

*** WARNING: Dead horse beating ahead

The CNMT is a product owned and operated by Robert's favourite organization in the world, the CSA. It's the CSA's job to make the business case (meaning finding the money) for Sportsnet to show the games. Maybe this is the Argos fault too. [:P]

I don't understand it at all either. I don't understand why they don't use the digital channels, or why they couldn't show it Saturday night. I understand Dobson and Forrest will be on the road, but I'm sure they could find a tv studio out west somewhere if they really wanted to. Or why not use somebody else. Or even show the Spanish broadcast.

I would venture to believe the reason they are not showing it live (even on digital) comes down to a money issue.

They will be purchasing the feed from a Spanish broadcaster. They can get the rights to that feed much cheaper if they only show the game on a tape delay basis. Buying the rights to a live feed always cost a lot more.

GAWD......we bitch if it's not on, we bitch if it is on. The e-mail clearly states that RSN has aquired the rights on a tape delay basis.

Yes in a perfect world we would get it live. But this is Canada and this is soccer.......appreciate what we get. Odds are if it was live from Spain most of us would tape it anyways.

I'll refer you all to an article from sportsnet.ca from US coach Arenas about the FIFA 6th ranked and 5th ranked playing each other in WCQ and how Americans have to watch the tube to support Yankee soccer after finally getting the game on English TV.

The first women's match is tonight (Thursday). They're only showing one game on the weekend. Can you elaborate on this supposed restriction that prevents Sportsnet from showing men's national team games on the same weekend as a women's game? The way you've explained it is utter nonsense. The games are 24 hours apart.

Rodway's explanation that it comes down to money makes more sense. I wouldn't be surprised if the Spanish FA (or whatever broadcaster holds the rights) asked too much for the live rights, believing the North American audience is larger than it really is.

If the game was on pay-per-view, I'd gladly pay to see it live!

But since these Spanish channels are not available (as per CRTC), and Sportsnet nor FSWC

cannot acquire the rights, well... what's the real soccer fan to do? Believe me I've

heard all the arguments, about the ones in the UK getting only 2 or so games other than

a subscription to Sky. Well, if Sky was available I'd get it too. When the grey market

dishes were "functioning" I also had access, until the zap police came along. ;)

Nevertheless, thank you Sportsnet for getting the tape-delay. Frustrated yes, but thankful.

I can't elaborate because I'm just repeating what "thepatriot" (the Sportsnet insider I referred to) posted in this thread (see the post dated 08/13/2005 : 17:50:10). I tend to believe what he/she says; note that he/she was correct about the tape delay, two weeks before it was actually announced.
