Paul Stalteri in Spurs match on August 27 [R]

Well, it was his fourth match for Spurs today, after three clean sheets - not exactly his debut.

It's a bit hard to judge today's performance because Spurs were down to 10 men. But on the first goal, Stalteri was stuck in no-man's-land, neither guarding the post nor the man who made the pass to Del Horno at the post. On the second goal, he was the closest man to Duff, who scored, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was the one responsible.

I bet Chelsea makes lot of good defenders look bad. hey, it could have been worse!(Senderos)

He didn't look out of place, but didn't stick out as the best player in the park or anything either. Chelsea didn't have much joy trying to attack on his side of the field, they seemed to exploit the other side where a younger defender was making his first start of the year for Spurs, and he got burned on the 2nd goal. The first goal was a total shambles of disorganization on the corner, probably helped due to being a player short who would have been covering a tall defender (such as the one who scored) on the play.

Chelsea got some Man Uventus-like calls in the officiating. A dubious red for Spurs after a likley more deserved red against Chelsea was given as a yellow.

Duff's goal was a fluke. Duff was his man though, and I though there was too much space between the two for that area of the box. Still, he may never, ever score an oop-see like that one again.

I hate when teams don't play men on the posts. Except of course when my sides playing against them. That isn't Paul's call though. Bit of confusion there on the Del Horno goal by I think Diesel more than made up for the bad coverage on that play a few times over as the match got on. Man, he covered a lot of turf.

I thought he looked all right. Certainly not outstanding and some of those 2nd half passes were, ummmm, crap. Points for trying a couple of them but maybe a little past Diesel's talent after running 10 miles. But yeah, I think once he settles in a bit more, finds his place and "loosens us" a bit he's going to rock.

Covered huge amounts of space out there and absolutely no-one was afraid to give him the ball or include him in a forward movement. And boy, 10 men or no he was sure getting forward. Too bad it was mostly as bait.

And did anyone try to beat him one on one? I don't think so. That says something.

Nice to see him and Duff dualing for most of the match.

P.S. Sending off was a little bit harsh maybe. Not going to complain too much though. Even if it was unintentional or just careless those flying elbows/forearms SHOULD get you booked every single time and rightly so. Though a caution would have been fine, but a-gin, a red wasn't totaly unexpected.

Agree completely. On the first one, at the very least, he spun around as if to say "who had him" right after the header, so it looked like Del Horno wasn't his man (although "no man's land" was my thought exactly).

On the second, he was closest to Duff, but for me there were two mitigating factors. One, there was a man at the far post who would've been unguarded, so I think Paul had to hedge his bets. Second, Paul took away the middle of the pitch and I thought Robinson should've had the short side. Duff mis-kicked horribly, so it was a bit of a fluke anyway, but I can't pin it on Paul.

Perhaps he could have been a bit tighter to Duff on the goal, but it would be nearly impossible for him to have been in front of Duff to prevent the pass from getting to him. He had to be goal side of Duff and when a player cuts into the middle like that chances are he will be in front of the defender unless the striker is really slow. The problem was started by Wright-Phillips going past Kelly on the left like he wasn't even there. When you are already down a man you can't have players defending beaten that easily in the danger area.
