Cheeta
Ho ho! Best time of the year even though I've missed out on so much of it. This friday the semi-finals go at St. Vital Memmorial. Both matchs kick off at 6:30 and feature some of the usual suspects plus one. A.P.M. Sweatshack vs SOKOL (on the west field/stadium)<********> Winnipeg Croatia vs Lucania (on the east field/track oval) The final will be played this Sunday at 5:00 at St. Vital and it's anyone's guess who'll face off. Don't even bother trying to park any closer than the YMCA/Glenlawn unless you show up really, really, early. Pitchs are in pretty damned good shape so be there or be square. (Got a match Sunday, but may skip it for the final. Don't tell anyone). Have really missed a lot this year but just a little heads up from what I've heard or gleamed off the MMLS site. Same-old same-old from Croatia. World beaters one match and bums the next. If the lads can keep their hissy fits and purse swinging out of friday's contests they'll have a chance. Maybe not much of a chance, but at least an opportunity. Going with Lucania on this one for no other reason except that Lucania is Lucania and allways strong. A fixture in Winnipeg's Big Three. A.P.M. Sweatshack knocked Sons of Italy Lions out of the Cup in the quarters and have given the top of the league clubs a good go this season. A.P.M. and SOKOL are actualy getting a bit of a reputation for a dislike for one another, or so I've heard. Good. Glad to hear it. Two sides very campable of some attractive and energetic football. Calling SOKOL for no other reason except that SOKOL is SOKOL and allways strong. A fixture in Winnipeg's Big Three. Of course, I don't think there is a ref' out there who's got a love on for those Polish lads so you never know....

argh1
I really would have to put my money on Dieppe Dynamo. How they got away with registering as a rec league Div 1 team I dunno. They are stacked with U de M and Mt. A. players and have alot of recent (not too sound red-neck) immigrants from French speaking African and Mid-East countries. They tore up the Codiac League and won the Van Horne Cup already and have a long history as the Italian team that used to be known as Primo. But the club has switched focus and now is the prime team for French speakers in the Moncton area.
Cheeta
Sunday's MSA Cup Final will feature A.P.M. Sweatshack vs Lucania. The winner going on to represent Manitoba in the Challenge Cup. Caught most of the A.P.M.-SOKOL contest and even at 10 men A.P.M. looked hungrier, more organized, and destine to win. At the end of the day it was a 3-nil score line and deservedly so. Not SOKOL's best night and they were up against an opponent happy and more than capable of displaying SOKOL's failings. Didn't get any of the Croatia-Lucania match as both semis were played at the same time. Lucania went through on a 2-1 scoreline in what was apparently a fairly well played contest. Again, 5 o'clock Sunday at Saint Vital Memmorial. I'll not be there. By bum team is in it deep Sunday and I've been guilted/bribed into trudging off to do my duty. Dang. Cheeta
And MSA Cup Champions for 2005 are Winnipeg Lucania. Lucania repeat as Cup Champions by dismissing A.P.M Sweatshack 6-1 largely on the strength of a 2nd half performance. Tough playing such competative matchs so close together but with such a short season league dates, make up matchs and Cup dates have to be squeezed in as best as is reasonably possible. Good luck, Lucania.
beachesl
In Alberta, Senior Alberta Championships for Men (and Women) this coming weekend September 2 to 5 at E - Ellerslie (Scottish) Fields, 3105 - 101 Street, Edmonton (far southside just to the east of Hwy 2), not great fields, but a good location for the southern guests. Don't know who the six men's teams will be, as the ASA site is in such bad shape. schedule: ChallCupAltaPOs edit: Okay, found out who the 6 men's teams will be thanks to Cooks and Stu's excellent forum, the "Calgary Soccer Community" http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=calgarysoccer There are 2 pools of 3 Edm 1 - Scottish (Edm) S2 - Dinos (Calg) S3 - Villians (Calg) S1 - Callies (Calg) N2 - Italian (Edm) N3 - winner of the match between "Green and Gold" and Victoria (both Edm) Tuesday night Teams play within the pool (real weird schedules based on seeds, where the ties count more for the higher seeded clubs!) and then crossover for medals. I don't understand why there can't be straight round-robin, or even cup-style elliminations. The ASA has to complicate everything it seems. It is also too bad that there is not a province wide challenge system in a pyramid, rather than just some of the clubs in the AMSL. Red Deer and Lethbridge apparently could have challenged, but apparently chose not to.

beachesl
Alberta, Edmonton's Green and Gold defeat Calgary's Dino's 5-0 for the Gold Medal and a place in the nationals, all the scoring in the second half. Little old Ian Diaz (substitute second half) scores a hatrick, Conthius (sp) cores, as does late sub Kurt Bosch on a gift pass from Diaz, who was by this time was playing with the weary frustrated Dinos. The Dinos dominated possession in the first half and outmuscled the GG's but could not finish off their chances. Edmonton kept a solid core of defensive players in the first half with the moderate wind against them, and on the breaks actually had the closest chances with their possession. In fact, Edmonton had a goal from a goal mouth scramble called back in the first half on an extremely close offside call which occured inches from the goal line if it occurrred at all. The GG tactics changed in the second half, and with the wind in the second half, opted for speed up front from the wealth of bench talent, to tire the Dino big men out. After about 15 minutes Diaz finally popped in the first one, and it was a deluge after that. Calgary Villains edged Edmonton Italian 4-3 in the wide-open bronze medal match. The Alberta women will be represented in the Jubilee Sheild by Edmonton Victoria who broke a scoreless stalemate early in overtime on a golden goal after a heartbreaking dfumble by the Edmonton Angels goalie. beachesl
The "5 subs, including returns" and golden goal rules are apparently standard for provincial competitions in Canada (and will be in place for the nationals), but this will probably be the last year, as the CSA is planning on imposing the standard FIFA laws to all national and provincial competitions starting next year.
