Jim Brennan - Norwich City

It's been a frustrating couple of years for Jim Brennan since the Canadian international arrived at Carrow Road on a free transfer from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2003. A muscle tear, followed by an ankle problem kept the 28-year-old on the sidelines for much of last season, during which time he was reduced to the role of spectator as the Canaries battled in vain to hold on to their Premiership status. Now fully recovered from his injury setbacks, Brennan is hoping to make up for lost time and help the club back into the top flight in what is the final year of his contract. Givemefootball's Mark Shail is the man with the questions.

Q IS IT FAIR TO SAY THAT LAST SEASON WAS A DIFFICULT TIME FOR YOU?

A Yes, it was very disappointing. First of all I tore my thigh in pre-season and that took much longer to repair than expected. Then, when I finally recovered from that, I damaged my hip-flexer within two days of resuming training and that kept me out for another month. Just when I thought things were getting better I picked up an ankle injury, it was all very frustrating.

Q ARE YOU FULL RECOVERED NOW?

A Yes, I'm fine now, in fact I've just played a series of World Cup qualifiers for Canada and I feel fitter now than I have done for a long time. It won't be easy to break into the first team at Norwich but that is my immediate goal and I intend to get my head down and work hard.

Q HOW DID CANADA GET ON IN THOSE WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS?

A We beat Cuba but unfortunately lost to the USA and Costa Rica, which means we are now out of contention for a place in the World Cup finals. It's disappointing but Canada are currently going through a transitional stage with a lot of the older players making way for the younger guys coming through. Give it a couple of years and I think Canadian football will be in much better shape.

Q HOW IMPORTANT IS DEAN ASHTON TO THE CLUB'S CHANCES OF A QUICK RETURN TO THE PREMIERSHIP?

A He's crucial, and I have no doubt that he will develop into a great player. He's young, he's a great finisher and he works very hard at his game. If he continues to develop as he has over the last year or so wouldn't be surprised if there will be a number of top clubs interested in him.

Q DO YOU THINK NORWICH MAY STRUGGLE TO HANG ON TO HIM?

A It depends on how well we are doing. If we don't go up this season the club may find it hard to keep hold of him, but at this stage it's vital that he stays because he is a key player for us.

Q IT HASN'T BEEN A GREAT START FOR THE THREE SIDES RELEGATED FROM THE PREMIERSHIP – WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?

A No it hasn't, but it's still very much early days. I suppose, as well, other teams in the division now look upon teams like Norwich, Southampton and Crystal Palace as the sides to beat and they raise their game against us. That's something we will have to deal with.

Q WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE?

A Having had some many injuries over the last couple of seasons, I'm not looking too far ahead – I just want to get back into the first team and play as many games as I can. Ultimately, I would like to have another crack at Premiership football, whether that's here at Norwich or somewhere else.

hopefully brennan was just misquoted in the editing process of that article, either that or he's really out of it.. or he chose to misrepresent the gold cup as WCQ on purpose for some odd reason.

This interview was already posted a few threads ago. I sense a patented DJT merge coming up. :)
