I know NB girls finished 9th. But are there any others who want to comment on this tourney. Yes I know the Maritimes aren't worthy and should only send one team ;)

But this is the best of Canada's U-18 or is it U-17 representing their provinces. How's the competition .....anyone in Regina watching any of this?

EDIT: It is U-17 I looked it up [B)]

I was flipping through the list of players selected for each of their provincial squads last weekend. You'd be surprised how recogizable the players are to those of us here who follow the game every day. Many, if not all, of the candidates for our national U20 squad for 2007 are playing in the Canada games. I recognized, on the various provincial sides, most of the names from the Can-Sco match that I attended this spring.

The only problem that I noticed is that one tournament only starts next week once the other tourny is done ( ie; Boys and Girls tournies are not played at the same time). I cant understand why they don't run play both tournies concurrently over the full two weeks. I suspect that its because of availability of facilities. Consequently the whole tournament consists of about 3-4 games per team spread over a full week.

I'm covering the Games and have been all over the place in Regina for week one. I haven't seen much of the women's soccer because I've been too busy with other priorities (not my priorities, I go where I'm told).

I did staff the BC/Sask quarter-final and it was a really, really good game. The quality was impressive. Sask had a really young team and when they played their game in the first half (Kyle controlling the midfield, using their pace and vision to play the ball to ground and into dangerous areas) they looked quite good. Not that BC was anything less than you would expect. Lots of quality and pace all over the park. BC was better in the second half and over-came a 1-0 hole to win 3-1.

Alberta looks really strong. I wish I had seen the Alta/BC prelim or gold, but I won't see either unfortunately. A little unlucky for Sask because they crossed over to play BC who was second in their group behind Alta, the two best teams in the tourney. I wonder if a better draw might have gotten tham a legitimate medal shot.

Charmaine Hooper is in town and spoke to the athletes Thrusday night.

They could have held the soccer concurently since men's soccer is in Moose Jaw. Volleyball and basketball are both held at the same time, while soccer and softball divide the genders into week 1 and week 2.

I'll be all at every men's game next week, but may not have time to post much on here. I know I had basically no time this week and I can't put anything on-line until a day after its run, if at all. Today is my day off and I'm only writing three stories.

Lot of good players in the mens' competition. Ontario and Quebec look very, very strong. It's a good audition for the 07 U20s. Obviously the likes of Peters, DeGuzman, Johnson, etc aren't there, but there are a lot of U17s and U20 developmental guys there.

cheers,

matthew

edit: actually the SK4 NS 3 game and the Man 2 NL 0 were consolation semis playing towards the fifth-place game. The QFs were BC3 Sk1, On2 NS 1, Que3 Man2 and Alta. 6 NL 0.

Today SK/Man are 1-1 at the half for fifth and Ontario is up 2-0 on Quebec for bronze. It's driving rain.

CBC has a highlights show at 11:30 p.m. (at least that's the time in Sask) that should have soccer gold highlights.

Okay, so I read this AM's paper NB 3-1 NL former SYL Boston Bulldogs player Eric Cormier (Riverview, who I believe is still with the Bulldogs but in the Eastern Mass. Sr. League) scored 2 goals and current Bulldogs player Olivier Babineau (Dieppe) scored 1.

Matthew how was this game?

Actually I didn't see much of that game as I was watching Alberta-Manitoba instead. I did manage to see two of the goals though. For some reason (and this has happened a couple of times), the game kicked off 15 minutes earlier than scheduled.

So in the third minute Newfoundland's Zach Wade just turned and ran through the middle of the NB defence.

Cormier's first came in the 46th minute when he got a cross from the flank in the box, pulled it down, made a couple of feints and scored. He scored the winner in the 83rd and Babineau scored into an empty net at 93 when he gathered the ball and made a run from near half with the Nfld keeper Graham in the NB half after coming forward.

I'm off to watch NB and Quebec. I'll post the score when I get back.

cheers,

matthew

Quebec 3, NB 1. Cormier got his third of the tourney to open the scoring and Beaulieu-Bourgault tied it with a header in the box just before half. Pierre-Rudolph Mayard scored a brace in the second half fairly early to give Quebec the win. David Smith scored directly off a corner for NB, but the goal was ruled out because of a foul on the keeper I believe.

Ever think of writing for one of the papers down here a little south-east of Butt Crack No-Where. Sounds like you'd give local matters some ink ;)

I think I actually applied in Bathurst straight out of school. I'm all about local matters, trust me.

QFs are set, NS v NB, PQ v Sk, On v Ab, BC v PEI. All four go tomorrow along with the concolation games - Mb v NWT and Yukon v Nfld - go in the a.m. Will NWT score their first ever goal at the Games? Will Yukon beat a province for the first time?

I thought that NB/Sask QF was coming, but no dice. After PEI put a scare into Ontario (2-0 PEI for 30 mins, but they had their keeper sent off at 58 as it started to unravel) I don't think any of the QFs are going to be blowouts.

cheers,

matthew

Okay, now I'm just being nosey........are you from Bathurst or did you just have the urge to work for the "Northern Light" ?

Yukon came close tied NS in the the 1st game for each.

In any case thanks so much for your reports on the Canada Games.

Nope I’m from Regina. Bathurst was hiring and I needed work.

I staffed that Yukon/NS game. It was a lot of fun to watch. NS came out flat and Yukon took it to them. Power the NS goalie did very well to keep them in it. In the second it was all one-way traffic and NS finally tied it. But Yukon has some good players.

Today was a lot of fun. Of most interest to you argh is: NB 2 NS 1 on a golden goal. Cormier scored on a PK in the 90th minute and two minutes in extra time Peter Tryphonopoulos scored the winner. NS went ahead on an eighth minute OG. I didn’t see any of it beause I was at SK/Que. That was 1-0 Quebec as they scored an OG on a deflected shot in the 119th minute. Heartbreaking. Saskatchewan did so well.

Ontario came back from a Shaun Saiko PK (which he took twice and scored both times) to win 2-1 in GG. Marc Sebek tied it at 76 and in the 95 Kasey Kiarash cut the ball back and Shane Lammie dummed it at the penalty spot and Josue Jaramillo finished nicely to end it. Very nice golden goal. Very good game, both teams were great. BC hammered PEI 7-0.

cheers,

matthew

I wish I could post the CanadaEast.com article but it's in the subscription only section :(

But as everyone knows I'm an unabashed homer....so well done NB a medal of any kind is wonderfull. What's best though is players for this team are from all parts of the province so the future looks bright.:D

NB roster

Look forward to reading the article online from the local on site paper.(or what can be got for free)

I wish I could post my article, but it's kind of bad form.

Hopefully my gold medal story will be on the wire post-game.

Quebec just beat BC 5-2 by scoring five goals in the last half hour to earn bronze. Alberta beat Nova Scotia 5-0 for fifth.

cheers,

matthew

Nope it was 1-0 Ont when a NB played handled the ball on the line. That was a red and Ont converted the PK, 2-0. It was 3-0 when an Ontario guy was sent off for an elbow on a header where the guy he fouled landed on his feet. I was pretty far away from the call, but everyone seemed to be in shock. NB scored right after. NB got a second yellow late on a foul that didn't bring the Ont player down.

I have to say though, that the officiating was very, very good all tournament and while the last two cards struck me as excessive, they didn't affect the result I didn't think.

Oh and they split the yellow cards.

cheers,

matthew

Josue Jaramillo. He scored twice, including the opener. Kyle Oliviera played really well, fed Jaramillo for his second and converted the PK for the second goal. He also pushed up nicely and joined the attack from his CB/libero spot. Alex Bralatic played really well again as well. He created the fourth goal and scored the fifth. The whole team played well to be honest.
