Baseball/Softball voted out of Olympics

The European stacked IOC has voted out baseball and softball from 2012 on. The first voting out of sports since polo in 1936.

For games that have a strong North American, Latin American, Asian and Oceanic base there's gonna be some upset national Oylmpic Commititees. So really the sports are only not popular in Europe and Africa. The strange thing is the IOC failed to elect two other sports to replace them. MLB is taking most of the blame for not releasing players for the olympics and concentrating on it's new World Baseball Classic as the venue to promote the game internationally. Japan's pro leagues released players for the olympics.

And they kept fencing and syncro swimmimg and some of those horse events......ahhhhhh.......

EDIT: Sorry didn't see this brought up in the London 2012 thread 'till now. So keepers of the board delete, move or ignore, this thread as you see fit.

Baseball is quite popular certainly in Holland.I believe that the Baseball guys have only themselves to blame.Their drug policies and bombastic attitudes of complete ignorance speaks for themselves. I do wonder how the voting went as far as numbers are concerned. So here we go two out of three major N.A sports are not in the Olympics.I have never been a baseball fan and for years I have been saying this is not a legimitate sport and does not do anything for our children so this things suits me fine. This also applies for softball.

I think that there is a committment which I agree with to limit the number of sports and number of athletes for future Olympics. A team sport certainly pushes up athlete numbers, puts pressure on the host when it comes to facilities (such as with baseball), and means other sports that may be more popular in less powerful nations might get a chance. This is why I would be in favour of squash, it is played the world over, but it would mean a few medals for Pakistan that otherwise they would never get.

What we really have to do is eliminate all these sports that are blatantly moneyed first-world sports where no poorer nation could ever compete. And all those ridiculous swimming medals: butterfly is a legitimate way to swim, no question, but why not have hopping on one leg or running backwards on the track as well? Or cross country running? I think the answer is that those who might win those competitions are not necessarily in powerful IOC nations.

I think that Spain is only okay in that roller hockey with the old style skates and the field hockey type stick. The world powers in that sport are Argentina, Portugal, Spain and Italy and all other nations are way behind. So hardly a game to bring to the Olympics though in some regions (Catalonia, where almost the entire Spain team is from, northern Portugal, like Barcelos where we played the Portugal friendly) there is real passion about the game. And some really fanatic, even violent fans, no kidding.

It was an invitee in Barcelona 92, I see it on tv a lot and know amateur players, but frankly don't like it much. Unlike other sports I have come to appreciate here, like handball, fine game I think.

The recent world in-line championship saw Spain do quite well, I think they played for 5th place; Canada if I am not mistaken lost the final to France.

You're kidding right? Baseball is to Holland what surfing is to Saskatchewan. [8)]

I know Holland played in the Olympics (not the US )and beat Cuba, while at the same time being I believe the European Champions.

There were some well known Dutch guys that played in the Nl and Al.

I played baseball and it is played at the schools as a mixed sport.

In the olden days there were always baseball exhibtions at half time during a soccer game.

There is a great rivalry between Italy and Holland.

So just stick to Saskatchewan.

Just because Holland qualified for the olympics in baseball doesn't mean baseball is popular in Holland. Canada qualified for the World Cup of Cricket. [:P]

It is quite popular in Holland and on the International level they are ranked as one of the top teams.

Baseball is played in the summer time when soccer is in a recess.

That's when I played it. I gues most Dutch kids have played baseball and I suppose that with their sucess in the Olympics they are even very good at it.When the Dutch team was here in 1994 for the World Cup and were to play against the Canadian team, the first thing they asked me to take them to a Baseball game,i.e The Blue Jays.Because of the short notice and not getting any cooperation from the Jays I spent $900.00 to buy tickets from the scalpers.

They had a good time although they did not stay untill the end.

I don't know if they ever played against the USA.At least they made it to the Olympics!

First Hockey, now basketball and will baseball be next. Thanks god it is only a sport.

Just to clarify... there is no surfing in Saskatchewan, not even on Lac La Ronge and a guy from the Netherlands (Andruw Jones - Braves) participated in the All star game Home run Derby. Oh, and Taj Burrows does not even know what corner Saskatchewan is on.

:)

Hey, just to clarify further... Andruw Jones isn't from Europe, but the Caribbean island of Curacao. Players from the Netherlands Antilles, a group of islands that include Curacao and Aruba, are eligible to play for the Netherlands in the coming World Baseball Classic. That includes guys like Jones, Baltimore's Sidney Ponson (Aruba), and former Brave/Tiger/Cub/Pirate/Devil Ray Randall Simon (Curacao).
