The CPSL has spent about two weeks planning for the game but still does not have confirmation from sports agency International Management Group, which is handling the Rangers' training camp in Toronto, that the game has been approved. "I'd say it's probably 60-40 in (our) favour," CPSL commissioner Cary Kaplan said yesterday. "We're hopeful that we're going to be playing them." Rangers, champions of the Scottish Premier League, began a nine-day camp on Tuesday at the University of Toronto. Coming to Canada was seen as a retreat for the Glasgow players, who wanted to get out of the international spotlight in Scotland. Because they want low-key practices in Toronto, details about the possible exhibition game against the CPSL have been kept under wraps. Kaplan expressed frustration about that. "I'm surprised at the extent of the logistics," he said. Rangers agreed to a game against Croatian powerhouse Dinamo Zagreb slated for Tuesday at the Rogers Centre but expressed an interest in playing a Canadian team. "They've got the one big game. They don't want anything to get in the way of that game," Kaplan said. "They're looking for a practice game somewhere, but playing us is a little bit more high maintenance than just playing some team in a backyard somewhere. It's probably easier for them to play an amateur club somewhere in a discreet location." CPSL officials planned to hold a practice last night and likely will have one more tomorrow with the men selected to play. London City was asked to send four players -- Eris Tafaj, Gentjan Dervishi, Dennis Peeters and Haidar Al-Shaibani, who will not attend because of an injury. However, City manager Harry Gauss was unsure if he would send any players to Toronto. City had a game last night against the St. Catharines Wolves and will play another tomorrow against Toronto Croatia at Cove Road field. "I want some confirmation. I'm not just sending my players into a pool," Gauss said. Kaplan said most of the players the CPSL has called on will get a chance to play if the game is approved but there will be a few who will not suit up. Yob
Looks like Rangers are playing a CPSL all-star team behind closed doors on Saturday. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/Canada/2005/07/08/1122669-sun.html Rangers to play CPSL all-stars By KATHY RUMLESKI -- London Free Press Dennis Peeters, a Canadian Professional Soccer League rookie, is stunned he'll be suiting up to play against Scottish Premier League champion Glasgow Rangers tomorrow in Toronto. Peeters, a midfielder who plays for London City, was selected to the CPSL all-star team for an exhibition match against powerful Rangers. "I wasn't expecting that at all. It's a privilege to be asked to play against Glasgow," Peeters said yesterday. "It's going to be an incredible experience. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." The game will be played at the Dufferin Clark Community Centre in Vaughan at 6 p.m. The game is not open to the public, only CPSL officials and the media, CPSL commissioner Cary Kaplan said. Rangers are trying to keep the game low-key and see it as a tuneup match before playing Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, he said. "It's unfortunate for any fans that won't be able to see the extra game," Kaplan said. Peeters, a Parkhill native, is hoping to have a few friends and family members in the stands but he doesn't know if that's a possibility. City will send one more player to the game, midfielder Eris Tafaj. Kaplan said although fans won't get to see his all-star team in action, he said the league would still receive a lot of publicity about the game. "From an exposure standpoint . . . people will realize how good the league is," he said. Kaplan expects his players to put up a good fight during the match. "It's pretty safe to say the CPSL all-stars are going to play really hard, really aggressively. Hard and aggressively is not inconsistent with fair play," he said. "(Organizers) did mention they expect a clean game. For Rangers it's a tuneup game, but for our guys it's a great opportunity." Kaplan said the CPSL had to work hard behind the scenes to secure the game. "We agreed to a lot of conditions," he said, and that included receiving no revenue for playing the game. "We're having a very productive camp in Toronto, but also really enjoying the city and our fans here," Rangers manager Alex McLeish said in a release. "We think this match against the CPSL stars will be a great opportunity for us to prepare for Tuesday's big match and it will be nice to see some new faces when we meet some of Canada's local talent on the field." Johnnie Monster
Why in the blue hell aren't any of the USL teams working their asses off to negotiate a match with the Gers? What a wasted opportunity. Something to consider: Over on the west coast we will have EPL's Sunderland, all the CONCACAF Gold Cup Nats, plus the three Cascadia USL clubs all in the same general vicinity at the same time</u>. There's also an on-again, off-again chance that Real Madrid will be in Seattle for a glamour friendly against a Mexican side, and Beckham is actually under contract to play. Surely to God SOMEONE has thought about getting Gers over this way for a match or two. No offense to CPSL fans on here, but "CPSL all-stars" doesn't really conjure images of top notch football in my books. Not even close. All that's going to result from this is a lopsided Rangers victory, which then spawns UK\Europe media reports about how terribly inferior the Canadian game is. obdfan
Game is at 6pm at Varsity, no spectators. I been at the Varsity few months ago and if it is still the same I believe that you can watch a game by just standing outside the fence that surrounds the stadium. Can someone confirm this because I would not mind going there to see the game. Here is link to Rangers website and arrticle about the game venue change. Rocket Robin
Nope. I wasn't at the game. I expected an unnumbered sweatshirt game with frequent subs so I saw the Toronto Supra vs (Windsor) Border Stars game at Brockton Stadium up the subway line. So there'd be two teams not there. Plus Brampton was in Laval so scratch another two. I asked the DeThomasis's who were at the game scouting for the Vaughan Shooters and they said they never sanctioned any of their players to go. (yeah now I see why as they're playing in Laval tomorrow). Six CPSL teams are playing tomorrow so I don't know what kind of CPSL team ended up playing. Well, it seems to me like Rangers are doing exactly what they want to do, which is train on their own and out of the "spotlight", then play Dinamo Zagreb in a friendly and that's it. This CPSL thing sounds like nothing more than a training scrimmage. I would think that if Rangers wanted to be part of something bigger then they would have gone looking for it, but all they wanted was an amateur-type team to scrimmage against. jordan
As a Rangers supporter i think that is a good score, considering 6 of the starting 11 in the second half were under 21.
blackstars06
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/4668621.stm Canadian Select 1-4 Rangers Teenager Ross McCormack staked his claim for a chance in the Rangers first team by scoring twice against a Canadian select team in Toronto. McCormack came on at the interval as manager Alex McLeish made 10 changes after a goalless first half. The 19-year-old struck a curling free kick, provided the corner for fellow teenager Jukka Santalato to head home before netting a long-range effort. Five minutes from time Steven Thompson bundled over another McCormack corner. Gabriel Pope grabbed a late consolation for the Canadians. Rangers face Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday in their second match of their pre-season training tour.
Rocket Robin
That's Gabriel Pop. Gabriel 'Pop' Salutius was what he was known last year on Metro Lions. This year he's with Oakville Blue Devils. They play Windsor today.
