Cheeta
Okay. It's a week before it gets to Seattle travel time and was wondering if anyone has got some travel advise for Cheeta, 'cause man, I've been no where. So I put myself to the honest advise of any Voyageur in the know. Seems there's a few lads on the site who've logged a few miles so any advise would be appreciated. Didn't get a passport as it takes too damned long and was told the Yank's Border Nazis' only need some goverment photo' ID and a SIN card at best. I'm good with that. OOP. Got my Manitoba Medial and Blue Cross cards all ready too because you never know... Staying downtown so anything about Seattle I should know? Got to be a few decent pubs for a drink somewhere. Must see tourist traps? Beach? Anything? How about the train? Steaming out Wednesday evening. Anybody taken the train down to Seattle and if so anything I should keep a head's up for? Any advise or tidbits will be appreciated. Thanks much.
beachesl
Downtown Seattle is wonderful. The Fish Market and the walk along the harbour is great, especially when the sun is going down behind the Olympic Mountains across the Sound. Take a ferry ride(passanger) across the Sound perhaps to one of the Islands (don't bother paying for one of the harbour cruises), and time it so you return when then the sun is going down. No good beaches in the area, have to drive about 2-3 hours west. Don't drive in Seattle anywhere near rush hour, along with LA it has the worst traffic congestion in the US. Lots of good pubs everywhere down-town. And the downtown at night is one of the safest in the US, lots of single women walking around, which is nice to see. Take a Monorail ride to the Space Needle. The Modern Music Hall of Fame is okay, but not worth the steep price. Good restaurants, order fresh seafood. Lotsd of resatuarants (and takewaways) for fresh fish in the downtown and harbour area just to the north of the stadiums. The train may be expensive, haven't taken it, I would take the bus from Vancouver. Have a good one, can't go because I have to complete some contract project work that can't be put off. We'll finally meet for the WC in South Africa to cheer on our boys, I hope!

Vancouver Fan
The main street to walk in Seattle is 1st Ave.It will even take you close to the Stadium.Theres an Irish Pub called Fado that you might like.It is on 1st close to Pioneer Square. You might also like to take the Underground Tour.It starts in Pioneer Square and you'll get to know how Seattle came to be.The old town was built so close to the sea that the outhouses would overflow at high tide. Check the Mariners site to see if they are in town.Safeco is amazing during baseball games but you could always take a tour. If the wife is looking for shops try Pine between 4th and 6th. I can't make the Costa Rica match but I'll see you at the U.S.game. Cheers.

matthew
Last time I did Seattle I didn't do a lot of sightseeing as we were Bumbershooting it all weekend. The area near the needle and towards the Fish Market is worth spending a day checking out and there's lot of cool pubs around and good records stores. There's a place near there called Ye Olde Curiosity Shop that had real shrunken heads that I thought was kind of cool if a little touristy in a weird way. I like the area around UDub too. It's a fun safe town, so have a good time Cheeta. cheers, matthew

redhat
Cheeta, I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Express near Aurora, which is a block or two from the Space Needle. That area is close to the Experience Music Project, Children's Area, and the Monorail to Pine St. That's the shopping area. Most of the hotels are filled over the weekend; the ones near the airport are much cheaper. But since Baby Jack will be there, I got a mini-suite with a fridge, etc. It's about $117 per night and about 4 miles to QWest Field. Pike's Market is where they may throw fish at you. Lots of places to see, lots of pubs, and restaurants. Downtown hotels may even have a shuttle to Qwest and Safeco fields, so it's no problem. So if you get lost or want to meet up for drinks give me a call on the cell. As for entering the US, well it's preferable that you have a passport, but bring tons of ID and proof of your intentions in Seattle (game tickets, hotel confirmations, etc.). I don't think they (Customs and Immigration) would profile you, but just be polite and don't joke with them. The cameras are on these guys and they seem be instructed to be tough and appear constipated. And don't forget to bring flags, duct tape, and your kits. Check with QWest if they allow cameras because they didn't in Foxboro. And bring some money cause McDonalds cost about $12 or so for the friggin Happy Meal. The last time in Boston there were about 6,000 Costa Ricans and about 30 of us. But we won, the Voyageurs were great, and the look on our boys after the match was priceless. Cheeta
Cheers, guys. Avoid Pine street like the plague. Check. Hang at the market. Check. Plenty of music stores and pubs. Double Check. See Space Needle or you'll feel like an idiot when you get back and everyone asks "Did you see the Space Needle?". Check, damnit. And redhat's brought the cel ($1.50 a minute long distance on mine!!! Fu'k!). Checkity, check-check, check. So much for loafing beside the pool.
redhat
quote:Originally posted by Cheeta So much for loafing beside the pool. We should hook up before the game on Thursday. My wife & kid won't join us until Saturday's game vs. the USA, so before & after should be alright. I'd be doing some of the sightseeing on Wednesday and Friday; probably the Needle, the Experience Music Project, Pike Market, and Monorail on those days. So ya, Cheeta, there should be some time for some pool-loafing eh?[8D] BTW, the ride up the Space Needle is about $18. guess this needle really hurts. Cheeta
Cool. Well, since you're sighseeing Wednesday if you get a chance scout out the pubs down toward the stadium. See if you can find a marshalling pint, errr sorry, point close to the stadium for Thursday. Preferably a place with Canadian lager. Anyway, I'll ring you and we'll see what's what. masster
For all of those people that will be in Seattle, has any meeting place been established for before the games on both Thursday and Saturday? I'm going to be there on Saturday for sure and am thinking about driving down for Thursday, but I might be riding solo so I'd like to meet up with some other Voyageurs. redhat
In Boston the Voyageurs usually hung around near the gate entrances before the game, so I suppose that'll be the protocol. Can't really avoid spotting us with our Canadian jerseys and red shirts. And you may even spot Kevin McKenna's parents walk by.

matthew
quote:Originally posted by Sigma Not to get off topic, but I have always found the Canadian border guards to be more a pain in the ass then the Americans. The Canadian border guards always give me the third degree, no matter where I am coming from. Haven't ever really had that problem with the American's. Funny I have had the total opposite experience. It may be my choice of travelling companions (Cuba on the passport, the tattoos, the copy of Bust in the backseat, which they leafed through), but we got our car tossed for two hours once and they looked at every e-mail address and ticket stub and phone number in my 'Costanza wallet' and were convinced my Mint Records sticker was a tab of acid (I had no idea why I had it in my wallet). Luckily I peeled it off and stuck it on something and told them to keep it and they were convinced it was just a sticker. Never any worry on the way back. Even after a two week jaunt we got waved through at the Seattle-Vancouver crossing (the guy's brother lived in MJ) and they didn't even make us pay duty on all the crap we bought. Maybe the border cops are more militant in Ontario and in Montana? cheers, matthew
