Our Gold Cup Competition [Confed Cup R]

After watching Mexico vs. Argentina today, I was shocked how well Mexico played (even though they ending up losing in penalties).

Canada is in for a real tough tournament if they want to place at all. Mexico, U.S.A, Columbia, Costa Rica, Honduras are all a class and up to 90 rankings better than Canada. Then there is Guatemala, and Jamaica ( who have played very well in the last year). Trinidad, and Cuba should be evenly matched.

Well let's just hope these Countries don't bring their A-Lineups, and maybe our Men's National Montreal Impact's will do well.

We got lucky in 2002, maybe we can do it again.

Hell, yes we're in tough. There's a reason we're ranked 85th in the world and 9th in CONCACAF, because we ain't as good as the countries above us. Is that a knock on any-one, no , it's just reality.

How can we get better.....by playing in these tourneys where those ahead of us play. How do we improve our ranking.......by beating those ranked ahead of us. Can we win the GOLD CUP? I dunno, but I'll cheer and cry and keep fingers, toes crossed, and pray for divine intervention.

All I know is we'll never get any better unless we play the nations that are better than us and give players the experience of international tourneys.

Right now at this moment we have as many wins as Columbia or Mexico.

I tend to agree with you, although people may also argue that

we got lucky in 2000, 2002, and unlucky in 2003.

The truth is that countries like Mexico, USA, Guatemala, Costa

Rica, and T&T are using the Gold Cup to fine-tune their WCQ (Hex)

prep. Canada unfortunately, with many players opting to stay with

their Euro training camps, is preparing for the 2010 WC.

Mexico was awesome against Argentina and will have to be, to have

some success in Germany next year. For us, it's at least a chance

to see some new faces (Dodds, Johnson, Brilliant, etc) in the MNT

scene, and at best, a chance to surprise a few people. Wins against

Cuba and the Ticos, are possible albeit a longshot.

Spoiler??

Why are you reading a soccer forum before watching the game? You know better DJT.

I read other soccer forums without problems, because spoilers are identified. For some reason it's taken seriously elsewhere, but here it's considered "fussy".

We asked that spoilers be identified for 24 hours following a match.

Mexico isn't bringing their A team to the Gold Cup - according to Big Soccer posters its closer to a B or C (I suspect the former).

Honduras & Costa Rica are not bringing their respective top strikers who tended to be the only one to cause us trouble (Suazo & Wanchope respectively). Of course, we aren't bringing ours either. It should be an interesting tourney in that respect.

Yeah, Mexico looked real solid. But they always do in the big games, and then falter in smaller ones. They looked awesome last world cup playing Italy, but then they choked against US and so on...Plus they won't have an A team there.

I would also not include Honduras in that same group. Mexico and USA are by far the class of this confederation. Costa Rica is 3rd. Everyone else can beat the other ones on any given day. As for Colombia, it will all depend on the team they will bring.

Canada's advantage is that this is the big tournament for it while USA /CR don't really care as much. But we sure have a tough group, even with all the diluated line-ups.

Mexico looks like a team that could be peaking by the next world cup. I thought they played very well in the confed cup and just need to improve in a few areas to become a real threat in 06. They are playing with such great confidence now and have had excellent results vs. two of the best teams in the world. The chemistry really seems to be there this time around. I would love to see Mexico in the final (or at least make a great run up to the semis) in 2006.

Mexico did Concacaf proud at the Confed Cup,, beating Brazil then losing out to Argentina on penalties,, what an effort. On one hand I hate to see our competition do well and get better (Mexico and U.S.), on the other hand, it makes Concacaf look that much better and should push us harder to get our national team better to compete with them (but with the guys running the CSA these days I'm not sure if thats their priority at all) Mexico and U.S are clearly the superior 2 teams of Concacaf, I would rate Costa Rica third, and then group Canada , Honduras, and Guatemala together on an even keel next.. slightly ahead of T&T, Panama and Cuba...

Just want to say that Wanchope had a terrible club year, looks to be on his way out, hardly played for Malaga in key games, bitched constantly and even got into battles with fans, but still got the needed key goals in WC qualifying. While we have folks like Radz who is more or less on form (a little off, okay, but in line with what's expected of him at Fulham), makes no waves at the club, and does basically nothing for us.

I have serious doubts about a basic truism on this board -better clubs and club performance of our players means better national side- since lately it simply has not been proven accurate. And I admit I am constantly citing it when I advocate for the presense of certain of my preferred players. I think if you ignore club performance of quality you are being foolish (Frankie!), but I can accept that if you can get a team attitude that is right and a winning spirit you should not risk it just to bring in a club hotshot who may not fit in. Tough call.

Apparently (according to a bigsoccer poster) Winston Parks will not be at the Gold Cup either for Costa Rica (despite initially being named on the roster) as he will be needed in UEFA play by his club, Lokomotiv (Breath) Moscow.

If so, I like our chances against Costa Rica even more.
