FC United of Manchester

Karl Marginson has been named as the first boss of FC United - the breakaway club set up by Manchester United fans.

The ex-Rotherham and Macclesfield striker, a lifelong Red Devils fan, was recruited because of his experience of the local semi-professional scene.

"It is incredibly exciting to be involved at the birth of a project such as this," the 34-year-old said.

"As a kid I used to play on the pitch used by Newton Heath 100 years ago, so I had no hesitation in accepting."

FC United of Manchester were set up by fans disillusioned after Malcolm Glazer's takeover at Old Trafford, and have been accepted into the North West Counties League for 2005/06.

They have already been contacted by 260 potential players for the open trials on Sunday, 26 June - while an emergency general meeting on 5 July will determine the new club's board.

"We have had 15 people working on this project night and day for the past fortnight," said Andy Walsh, a fierce opponent of Glazer and a member of the FC United steering committee.

"Even at this stage, we are taking a massive leap into the unknown. But I think everyone is aware how serious we are.

"This is not just a reaction to Malcolm Glazer, it is about taking a stand for the vast number of ordinary fans who have been priced out of the game in recent years."

Before the North West Counties Division Two campaign begins, they will play friendlies against Conference North side Leigh RMI and fellow fans' club AFC Wimbledon.

FC United have also announced that they will play in red, white and black.

<<next time your in Manchester make sure to visit the historic Maine Road -preferably at night, and definitely wear your Gunners kit.>>

lol, I think I'll pass on that. I'm not an expert on Mancunian goings-on, never been there, I just know as a Gooner that I dislike Glazer United.... Is it true that Most Man U fans come from surrounding towns like Oldham, Bury, Stockport (with small crappy teams)?

um, can I just say to all you people having a dig at the supporters for starting their own club, its not about the fact one man now has MUFC at his disposal, or that he’s making changing it, its about the unnecessary commercialism of a beautiful game of how people can exploit what is to many a way of life, where every weekend you go down to your seat in the home stand at old Trafford and support your team and then a man comes along with a briefcase full of someone else’s money and takes that away from you, the new club is not meant to be a petty break away or protest, its about starting again, so that the mistakes of the past will not happen again

And just a few points

1. There are plenty of MUFC supporters in Manchester

2. There are plenty of Oldham supporters in Oldham

3. Whoever was on about Maine road, that place was knocked down about three years ago, so obviously anything you have to say will not be well founded!

I'd laugh at that one if I didn't know you were serious. And believed it.

It became commercial at Old Trafford long before Mr. Glazer came along. Why didn't they start the club then? Remember when the club dropped the words 'Football Club' from the crest? Remember when they floated on the stock market when they were hungry for the money?

The commercialism in football has been a long and slow process, agreed, and maybe we should have done more, sooner, but we cannot turn back the clock now, what has happened has happened and we are powerless to stop it, it is all we can do, we know it has been going on for a long time, but this was just the final straw, the line has been crossed, and more has to be done. So the new club has been started with a manifesto which prevents any such thing happening again;

1. The club will not be floated

2. Board Members can only be elected on by present board members

3. All elections will be done on a one man one vote basis regardless to however much of the club you may have acquired

As you can see any one of these rules could prevent what has happened at MUFC to happening at FCUM. We are not in immediate reaction to Glazer; he is just the catalyst which has started the reaction to a much more widespread problem

Well, wearing my Wimbledon hat right now, I support the Man U fans 100%. Now I have even more reason as an Arsenal fan to dislike ManU lol. Nonetheless I find the new name rather cumbersome, surely there were better alternatives? Wasnt Newton Heath a proposed name? Good history behind that one. What about something like 'Red Devils United'? I fear opposing fans could have a field day with FCUM, sounds a bit like "f*** 'em"

The name was voted for by the fans that had contributed to starting the club, FC United of Manchester won by a 45% majority. The club is already showing its intentions on how it will be run. In response to your jokes on the name, this may be the reason it was not adopted as the shorthand for the clubs name, this position was taken by F.C.Utd

I'm just pissed off that AFC Barnsley will be a tier below them after two years. First in the Sheffield League and then in the Central Midlands league and after winning promotion twice they find themselves one step on the ladder below spoiled rotten FC United of ManUre.

Get over it.....you went public and a rich bloke bought the shares. That's how it works!

See, you care this much about your club, its the same for fans of other clubs. You could of applied for the football league, but you didnt have the resources, same issue for your club isnt it, money.

I haven't been there in some time I admit. Did they knock down the whole street then?

Anyway, a guy in your shoes shouldn't be going on about being "well founded." Have a laugh and let a Canadian Arsenal supporter get a knife in the back.

Do what you like, but really, you have a new ground, the psycho and, for the moment, SWP right down the street. You should be enjoying yourself instead of crying on and on about the state of football. Piss off. Try waiting all summer for your neighborhood club to play Sunderland. Oh wait a minute, you will be -only in your case it'll be that FA Trophy draw with Staines Lammas. Good luck.

:)

Dude you need to calm down, you really lost me then especially in the third paragraph, what’s the point in making posts if only to insult people, we're not trying to whine just help people to understand the point of what we're trying to do, it really was intended for your benefit, not ours.

I don’t know which bits of Maine road got knocked down but the stadium did for sure, so it’s not going to be the epicentre of Man City supporter strength anymore, Man City now play in the imaginatively named City of Manchester Stadium.

And the FA trophy is only for non-FA-league teams.

Don't worry dude, I'm doing okay, thanks for your concern. Also, thank-you for enlightening me on the name of the new ground and the raison d'etre of the FA Trophy. I really appreciate it.

Here's what I'm trying to say in a nutshell: you have so much great football in your town, go enjoy it! You can make a club if you like, I don't give two squirts of piss. You (I don't mean you personally, rather a random person who was dissatisfied with United) could also support Man City or Wigan. (That's what I'd do, but that's just me.) Or you can whine about commercialism. Whatever you like. It's a free country. Peace dude.

Still bitter that "France" beat your boys in the FA Cup, huh? So you won in the league matches this year. Arsenal beat you when it mattered-in trophy matches. Oh, and in the table.

But do you still care? I mean, you seem so keen on the F-CUM boys...

I still support Man U that doesnt mean that i cant sympathise with others (FC Utd!!! not fcum) And it was unbeliavable bad luck to lose to arsenal in that final we totally outplayed them with i think it was forty shots on goal to two!
