FIFA says Mexico confirms positive doping tests

(Adds FIFA statement, changes dateline, previous MEXICO CITY)

By Philip Blenkinsop

BERLIN, June 24 (Reuters) - Two Mexican soccer players who were expelled from the Confederations Cup this week tested positive for banned substances, FIFA said on Friday.

"According to the Mexican football association's initial report, which has yet to be completed, two players, Aaron Galindo and Salvador Carmona, tested positive," the world governing body said in a statement.

A FIFA spokesman could not say what banned substance had been found in the tests. FIFA said it had now deleted the names from its players' lists.

"Only these names have been struck off and the decision has no retroactive effect," FIFA said, confirming Mexico's place in the Confederation Cup semi-finals was not under threat.

Mexico play Argentina on Sunday with the winners meeting either hosts Germany or world champions Brazil in Wednesday's final.

The two players had helped the team beat Japan 2-1 last week and upset Brazil 1-0 in their second match on Sunday to secure a place in the semi-finals. Neither featured in the final group match against Greece on Wednesday.

Galindo, 23, played as a replacement for injured Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, while fellow defender Carmona, 29, is an established international who played at the last two World Cups.

FIFA has ordered the Mexican federation (FMF) to deliver a full report soon and to impose punishment if appropriate.

FMF had earlier said that it was investigating the two Cruz Azul players on the assumption that they were contaminated by banned substances.

GROUNDS UNCLEAR

However, Cruz Azul coach Ruben Romano was quoted by a Mexican newspaper on Thursday as saying that both players had been disciplined over disagreements with the rest of the Mexico squad on Confederations Cup bonuses.

According to FIFA, FMF received news of the positive results, analysed by a laboratory in Los Angeles, on Monday.

Galindo and Carmona were expelled late on Tuesday for a breach of discipline but the federation refused at that time to elaborate. Coach Ricardo La Volpe had simply said they had been expelled from the tournament for disciplinary reasons.

FIFA said the Mexican federation presented its initial report referring to doping on Thursday.

The two defenders refused to talk about their expulsion when they returned home in mid-week.

FMF said that the results of its investigation would be sent to FIFA secretary general Urs Linsi.

FIFA did not select either player for testing at Mexico's two World Cup qualifiers at the beginning of June nor at the Confederations Cup. All its tests so far have been negative.

Klinsmann to select goalkeeper month prior to World Cup

June 26, 2005

NUREMBERG, Germany (AFP) - Germany manager Jurgen Klinsmann revealed he would rotate his three goalkeepers up until a month before the 2006 World Cup, running from June 9 to July 9, and then make a decision.

While most nations have a settled custodian Klinsmann has introduced a rotation policy with Oliver Kahn, Jens Lehmann and Timo Hildebrand all having a chance of winning the race to claim the number one jersey for the World Cup.

"The race for the number one jersey is open and the decision will be made in May 2006, just before the World Cup," Klinsmann told television channel ZDF.

"We have two world-class goalkeepers in Kahn and Lehmann and one coming through in Hildebrand. They will get their game to impress in the build up for the World Cup."

Bayern Munich star Kahn had been first choice for the past eight years but under Klinsmann he has been stripped of the captain's armband and forced to watch some games from the substitutes' bench.

At the Confederations Cup Kahn played the opening 4-3 win over Australia but then watched Hildebrand and Lehmann take over the gloves.

"The order is Kahn, Lehmann, Hildebrand at the moment but it can all change," Klinsmann explained.

"Perhaps it is unusual for some goalkeepers but we have to be prepared if someone gets injured. This system stimulates competition and gives everyone a fair chance."

Some critics have argued that constant chopping and changing disrupts the backline but Klinsmann has refused to budge from the tactic.

"Lehmann, Kahn and Hildebrand have all improved this season," countered Klinsmann.

While the softly-spoken Hildebrand has not talked up his chances Arsenal's Lehmann and Kahn have both declared themselves the best choice.

The rivalry between the two has been spiced up by the media with the duo renowned for not getting along with one another.

Wow, I have to say I was impressed by Mexico in this tourney.

To go out with your only loss into the 6th PK of the semi falls under the somebody has to win and someone has to lose category. I don't follow South American soccer but did I hear the commentator say Mexico beat Argentina in Peru in the last Copa Americas. If so is Mexico ready to move to the next level. Or will they be like Cameroon and never full fill the promise. Either way Mexico gave those they played at the Confed all they could handle.

Today's game was excellent. Very good display of skills, and both teams worked hard, pressuring each other constantly, plus lots of physical play to please non-Latin fans.

Mexico was very unlucky. It hit the goalpost twice during regulation time.

Brazil 4, Argentina 1

Aside from the score, it can't be viewed as a surprise because even the Argentinian players and coaches have admitted in the recent past that Brazil was better than they were at this point in time.

Yes Brazil can be beaten as any team can be, but more often than not Brazil beats itself when it loses. Scary part is Ronaldinho, Kaka, Adriano and Robinho are all 25 or younger. Cicinho looked ok too.
