The Fury were put under early pressure by the Stingrays but goalkeeper Angus Wong, who was to have a fine match, kept the home team at bay. The Fury were unfortunate to lose defender Janson Blake to a hamstring injury in the 24th minute but, against the run of play, the Fury took the lead in the 29th minute when Francis Mavula latched onto a cross from Kevin Omukhua after a long ball from Brazilian Rafael Traina, who was making his debut for the Fury. The lead lasted just five minutes however when the Stingrays equalized with a goal from Anthony Ward-Smith after a defensive lapse by the Fury. In the second half, the Stingrays continued to take the game to the Fury and quickly established a 3-1 lead on goals from Chris Napolitano in the 53rd minute and Geoffrey Cameron, assisted by Simon Gatti, in the 59th minute. The goal spurred the Fury onto the attack and reduced the deficit when Omukhua fed Desmond Tachie, who beat the goalkeeper with a chip into the top left corner of the net. The Fury pressed for the equalizer. The Stingrays keeper was forced to make a fine save from a free kick by Tyler Hemming and later Conrad Paszkowski forced another fine save from the keeper. The Fury’s record drops to 1-1-0. The Fury resume their road trip when they play the Cape Cod Crusaders Sunday at 4 PM. The Fury Men return home to play the Albany Admirals next Saturday at 3:30 PM as part of a double header with the Fury Women who play the Sudbury Canadians at 6PM. The Ottawa Fury lost to the Cape Cod Crusaders by 3-1 to complete their first ever Premier Development League road trip on Sunday afternoon. The Fury were without key players Souleymane Gagou, Janson Blake and Abdulia Mohamed for the second game of the trip. The Fury had the best of the early play which generated few chances for either side and took the lead on a penalty kick for hand ball. Mike Regan scored from the kick to put the Fury 1-0 in the lead in the 11th minute of play. The Fury were to hold the lead for most of the first half until in the 37th minute Cape Cod equalized after a mistake by Fury goalkeeper Vincent Dube let in Frederick Schramm for the equalizing goal. The score remained tied until the 73 minute when Dayton O’Brien’s corner kick eluded everyone and ended up in the back of the net. The Crusaders made the score 3-1 in the 80th minute when Conrad Paskowski committed a foul in the box and Kurt Morsink scored from the penalty spot. “Our first ever PDL road trip was a learning experience”, commented Fury Head Coach, Colin McCurdy, “We competed well in both games and I was encouraged by the tremendous character and spirit in the squad. We made some naïve plays defensively and in this league that will cost you. The good news is that we can compete with the best teams in the league”. The Fury’s record drops to 1-2-0. Seems to be having an alright year, given up 6 goals in 5 games. I am keen to see how he evolves, especially given that Syracuse U is a team with a mediocre record usually and he probably can't shine too much in that context.
