Does anyone know where to find pictures of the Winnipeg Soccer Complex on the net?

A start

http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=Wilkes+and+Waverley+Winnipeg&ll=49.845904,-97.178074&spn=0.004356,0.006931&t=k&hl=en

It would seem that there isn't anything there anymore than a lousy field in need of some love. That the problem with stadiums built of tempoary seating. Once the event is gone so is the Stadium.

Hey, I can see my condo from there!

Actually that's pretty good aim, Jarrek. Don't know how old those sat. pictures are though. Haven't been to WSC since the Pan-Am games (5-6 years now) but the reseviour just west of pitch #1 (the stadium) had a roof built over it to keep water foul out of Winnipeg's drinking supply. It could have been moved since or what-not but who knows?

To be fair, WSC has been living on borrowed time for a few year now so the powers that be have let it go to rot anticipating it's loss to commercial development. A new soccer complex is on the way as goverment funding is already in the bag, it's just a question of where. But bigger and better things are just around the corner. Or so I hope.

And..

I remember being at a Cuba match at WSC during WCQ with about 9,000 of my personal friends sitting on **** temporary bleachers that circled the pitch. Very cozy if a bit strange given the sort of crowd that showed up.

There might be pictures of WSC during the Pan-Am games as well with similiar style seating in place. Very tight, very friendly and just wanting for atmosphere, but very cool. If I get a chance Monday, and I remember, I'll hop the fence and take some digitals of the grounds as they appear now. I'm sure they'll be depressing snaps (see excuses above) but my curiousity is up.

Worst "stadium" ever...

As it stands, it doesn't even exist as it's not in use.

Too bad, as it's a grass pitch that was in pristine condition

during the Pan Am games in 1999.

As for worst stadium, I think Richardson Stadium was far worse.

Oh ho. Well then, Richardson must really, really suck. Well admit that, all things considered, WSC was great for the Pan-Am games. Could have used another beer tent though.

And no. Not my condos. Was making a poor attempt at a funny as 1). I live in a condo, (more row housing then apartment tower) but thank God not on that side of the river. And 2). One of the proposals for the WSC land is for a condo development. Little local humour. Not very good alas.

Geezus, the state of affairs in this town.

It's a close race. I like the coziness of WSC and the kop-like feel at the one end where people kept spilling out of their seats as we narrowly missed another chance. You were really close to the pitch and really packed in together which helped the atmosphere.

On the downside it was windy as heck and there's nothing around the block the wind. We were travelling from our downtown hotel and to get into the 'parking lot' (ie a giant field) we had to turn left over a double yellow and I believe it took nearly 30 mins. Getting out was a disaster too.

Richardson had lots of cool pubs and whatnot near the Richardson. The atmosphere in the Duck (or whatever that place was called) before the first leg was quite good and once we got to Richardson there was loads of space to park, tailgate, etc. Richardson was more like a proper stadium. The amenities were better (toilets, seats, concessions), but the track detracted and not having a full house didn't help. Still we were able to stand in a section and security gave us free reign. The pitch in Kingston was in much worse shape than in Winnipeg too.

If there was any kind of facilities to go along with WSC, it would have been all right, but overall I think I had a better time in Kingston. I can't believe that was only a year ago. I can't even recognize the optimism that was there for that first leg.

cheers,

matthew

Just heard from someone with one of our Premier clubs, that all of the games at the WSC this season have just been cancelled.

It seems Mayor Katz wants to pull the plug on the WSC. And why wouldn't he ? He owns the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League (baseball), so eliminating the WSC essentially eliminates any potential soccer competition for his professional baseball team.

Well, there's going to be a replacement for WSC and it's looking like a superior facility to WSC. More or less a mirror of those multi-plexs you Edmonton crowd got. A main building with indoor pitchs and at least a couple of outdoor pitchs, likely with FieldTurf and floodlights.

Think there are more indoor than outdoor teams in the city and I guess the powers that be have figured out this is where the money is at. Don't dought for 1 second the indoor operations will pay the lion's share of the operating costs of the new facility. Which is great because one of the downfalls of WSC was the expense of maintaining the pitchs and clubhouse and their consiquent underfunding.

Biggest fear is where the thing is going to get stuck. I've got nighmare visions of it being built on civic land out in the sticks, ala Maple Grove Rugy Park. That would pretty much poison the site's use for a lot of people and amount to an opportunity lost. Fingers and toes crossed the final location is decided on soon and it's within the city's "inner" perimeter (WSC currently falls in this catagory).

Anyone who was out for the 2000 WCQs or the PanAm Games wouldn't recongnise the neighbourhoods surrounding that part of town anymore. Huge amount of growth out that way. Huge amount. Seen articules estimating that 60k have migrated to the SW corner in the last decade so it's not so much the sticks anymore.

Anyway, there's a nice big parking lot right on Water across from Katz's ball park with plenty of elbow room. Certainly would get my vote for the new WSC.

P.S. Give Katz his due. He had to fight tooth and nail to get the Goldeye's stadium built at The Forks and paid his own way doing it for the most part. And he was made to pay for everything I can tell you that much. Still, he got the location he wanted/needed which is more than what a lot of others, myself included, would have allowed to have been done with that land.

I have no doubt that Katz will build more fields, but unless he's going to build a 5000 seat facility (ie, WSC) then it puts the brakes on any future professional/semi-pro soccer venture (which would be competing with the Goldeyes).

Winnipeg needs more soccer fields and they will be built, but I want a small scale staduim suitable for the pro game. If he's going to take the WSC away due to the land value , then he should be at least replacing that with a comparable facility.

for the record...and not that it matters....katz didnt put a red cent of his own money into the ballpark...that is a myth....including the expansion, about 60 percent was government money, the rest was guaranteed loans, naming rights money and a few other private investors.

Katz had his ball park built at our expense for the Pan-Am Games, while soccer, the #1 draw for the Pan-Am Games, was f#cked over.

After the games were over, the officials tried to milk every nickel they could out of the WSC. They actually went so far as to remove the carpet from the dressing rooms. The WSC was left in worse shape than prior to the games, while Katz got himself one of the nicest ball parks in North America.

Now he'll sell off the WSC, and leave us with no stadium, ensuring no future competition for his Goldeyes.
