T.O adds depth to its roster by adding a talented all be it young forward, who was good enough to play in Europe, and in Francois, they add a defender who would never get the playing time he deserved in Montreal because of the depth and talent in Defence. Francois likes to come forward in set peices and corners, and is deadly in the Air. In Ali/Gerba/Ngon The Impact get stronger at the Forward position by adding one of the leading point getters over the last couple of years....Question is which player(s) will suffer from Gerbas'addition? The tandem of Sebrango and Wilson seemed to be doing well. It seems likely that The Impact will not re-sign Forward Joel Bailey with the aquisition of Gerba. What is the motivation behind this move from the Lynx point of view? Do they really think that Matondo and François will help them more than Gerba (their best player)? Is money involved? More interesting is that he was exchanging info with Adrian Serioux who stopped by to say hello to his old teammates. Adrian told me that he's in town relaxing before he starts up again in preparation for the Gold Cup. By the way Wyn B. and Sean F. were the central stikers in today's workout against Creighton U. Thursday, May 19, 2005 [TORONTO, ON] - The Toronto Lynx announced today that they have acquired the rights to defender, Abraham Francois and striker, Sita-Taty Matondo, from the Montreal Impact in exchange for striker, Ali Gerba. Francois, who is an experienced defender in the USL First Division, was a target of the Lynx head coach during the off-season but re-signed with the Impact instead. The 28-year old from Montreal has spent parts of four seasons with the Impact (2000, 2001, 2003, 2005) earning two "Team of Week" selections in 2003 and helping the Impact post the best defensive record in the league. Internationally, Francois has played with the Canadian Olympic team and also won a gold medal with Canada at the 1997 Francophone Games in Madagascar. Coach Busby became familiar with Francois when he was head coach for the Ottawa Wizards in 2002 and the Wizards captured the regular season title, League Cup and playoff title. Francois' athleticism and aggressiveness will be a fine addition to the Lynx defense as they look to turn around the 2005 season after a frustrating 0-5-2 start. The Lynx also acquired talented Canadian striker, Sita-Taty Matondo, as part of the agreement with the Impact. Matondo has represented Canada at all levels: U17, U20 and Olympic Team. On January 18, 2003, he made his debut with the Canadian World Cup team against the United States. As a rookie with the Impact in 2003, Matondo scored 4 goals in only 696 minutes playing primarily as a substitute. Following his successful professional debut, Matondo joined Landskrona of the Swedish Division 2 before returning to the Impact for the 2005 season. At only 20-years of age, Matondo has only scratched the surface of his playing potential and should be an offensive force for the Lynx for many years to come. In exchange for Francois and Matondo, the Lynx will part with 2004 leading scorer and team MVP Ali Gerba. Montreal get the striker they were looking for, while Toronto has a great partner for Titus (that hack !) and a good up-and-commer in Taty. Smith and the other new striker make for a decent strike force with Taty and the Lynx needed defenders badly. Plus, they're badder and blacker then ever! The move tells us alot about why many are pessimistic about the future of pro soccer in this town under the current ownership. IN this deal, The Impact are aquiring a player to fill a need and/or add some depth, While at same time finding some playing time for a couple of younger LOCAL ( MONTREAL)players who were caught up in the numbers game. What do the Lynx get out of this deal in the medium and long term. Like any minor pro operation, there really isn't a medium or long term horizion. If someone like Matondo develops well, he will be off to somewhere else and Toronto will never get to reap the benefits. If the Lynx are supposed to be a vehicle for developing local youth talent as many a-league operations like to profess, then it would seem that they are doing for local talent in Montreal. The pool of soccer talent is vast in the GTA. Therefore if you are going to adopt a "develope for the future" stance, I would think that an operation like the Lynx wiould have local talent in mind. That is a very good point. The Impact, since they can't make room for these 2 players are sending them to Toronto in order to develope our local boys. It's better than to have to send them to the CPSL in Laval. And Ali is a local boy for us here in Montreal. And now even Wyn might end up playing for the Lynx... No need for an Impact reserve team... Someone with money needs to step in and buy the lynx and get a stadium in place. It's the only way. I've been to 3 Impact games in TO the last 3 years when the Impact were there and each time, I feel for you. It's just not acceptable that Toronto doesn't have a facility to play soccer. I had to scoff a bit in the press release about Matondo being with the Lynx for "years to come". If he develops into a star he leave the team just like everyone else has. A great deal for the Impact.
